• Organizations

Unsurprisingly, people who fantasize about living in the ocean tend to feel very strongly about protecting it, and about environmentalism in general. Here is a list of some organizations that are fighting to protect our planet's oceans, and the creatures that live there.

    Oceana
Oceana is the largest international organization working solely to protect the world’s oceans. Oceana wins policy victories for the oceans using science-based campaigns. Since 2001, they have protected over 1.2 million square miles of ocean and innumerable sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and other sea creatures.
    Marine Conservation Institute
The Marine Conservation Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving our living oceans. We work with scientists, politicians, government officials and other organizations around the world to protect essential ocean places and the wild species in them.
    Save Our Seas
SOS is an international Hawai’i based non-profit organization utilizing education and research to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans for future generations.
    David Suzuki Foundation
The David Suzuki Foundation works with government, business and individuals to conserve our environment by providing science-based education, advocacy and policy work, and acting as a catalyst for the social change that today's situation demands.
    Deep Sea Conservation Coalition
Over 70 organisations worldwide are working together under the umbrella of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) to protect cold-water corals and vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems. Together with the scientific community, we are calling for States to honour their commitments made at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)to protect deep-sea species and ecosystems on the high seas from the harmful impacts of fishing.
    Marine Conservation Society
The Marine Conservation Society is a UK based group that works to secure a future for our living seas, and to save our threatened sea life before it is lost forever.
    National Marine Sanctuaries
Run by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA, the National Marine Sanctuaries serve as the trustee for the United State's system of marine protected areas, to conserve, protect, and enhance their biodiversity, ecological integrity and cultural legacy.

/Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.

Not sure of the protocol here, but I'll add the Cousteau Society I grew up with, and the Chesapeake Bay (my watershed) has dozens of organizations and individuals (including the Chesapeake Mermaid) involved in cleaning up and protecting and educating for it.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society and its wa'as (ocean sailing canoes) Hokule'a and Hikianalia are deeply involved in not only keeping alive the Polynesian traditions of voyaging and navigating but of protecting the oceans they travel and have lived in for millennia.

Locally, in the Chesapeake Bay, a tiny tall ship, Schooner Sultana, and a unique pungy schooner, Lady Maryland, as well as several skipjacks (oystering sloops) connect kids and adults with their bay and the ocean it is connected to.

With a little digging, (or is that diving... into the depths of the interwebs???) I'm sure most of you have some local environmentalists who are making a difference!
