I took a break from cleaning today to finish sculpting the tail spines, I'm hoping I can convince my husband to help me cast them in resin soon (along with the belly scales that have been sitting around for a month)
Sorry for the bad pictures.

Glad to see someone else playing around with dorsal spikes! I drew up a design with similar spines a while back, but I haven't had any time to make a move on actually creating it. I'm excited to see how yours turn out.

My husband and I spent a good bit of time making a list of things that could make a tail more masculine or dark and the spines were one of our top picks I hope they turn out the way we want them too.
I am thinking about casting them in different shore hardness's to see what works the best.
I'm actually doing big scales down my belly too! It's interesting to see everyone's take on it. Don't worry, mine is very different. I can't wait to see this completed.
I love the idea of spikes down the back of the tail.
@ Shawn
I have been following your thread and look forward to seeing how your tail turns out
@Ashton
Thanks
General update: We just had to order more resin so casting the spikes will take longer then I thought. The resin should get here by the 6th.
My husband and I got around to working on his tail again, and there has finally been enough progress to give you all an update.
We remade the scales and they are way better than the first attempt:
The fluke is also sculpted and cast, we spent the better part of our morning digging clay out with our mighty spatula and popsicle sticks
We still need to sculpt the smaller scales and there are one or two more belly scales to sculpt and cast, but it is good to be back at it again.
I just pulled the first batch of large scales *-* they are so shiny. This is just the first half of the batch but I'm so excited that I had to share them before I could sit down and trim the rest.
Ok back to the trimming with me
Trimming scales and drinking tea, it’s the mermaid life for me.
Wow those scales are looking awesome!!!
The scales look awesome and the design is sick. I'm looking forward to the end result.
Bags and Bags of completed scales
Those scales look amazing.
thank you malinghi (sorry for the late reply, I thought I responded to this :/ )
Update Time!
Last weekend we got my husbands leg double done and I have started pining some scales. we do need to hang up the double before I can continue pining.
And check out this pile of molds ready for silicone
December is going to be fun
It's looking great!
I had the same scale design idea when I wanted to try and create my own tail, but it's a project that will probably never get finished, so I never started with it
Your imagination is your only limit
I also was one going to use placoid scales bot decided to switch and use wide round scales. Good luck!

Thanks Guys, I guess great minds do think alike
The Scale design (and sculpting) is a large part of why this tail is taking me so long, I wasn’t satisfied with my first attempt at the scale shape so my husband and I did an lot of back and forth sketching and redesigning the scales until we were both happy with them… then I had to sculpt them...
I am so blessed that my husband is so supportive of my mermaiding ideas and he is interested in the health benefits of tail swimming.
