should i get a mertailor

hi im twelve yrs old and for the past year me and my friend have been saving up for basic silicone mertailors. now she says she is going to wait till she is full grown (15) and use the money she has now for other things. I'm wondering if maybe i should do that too. So far I have 343 dollars and there is a lot of other things i would like to use my money for. but i still really want a mertailor and i don't know what to do.
also i have been swimming in fabric tails for a year and a half is that enough to be ready to swim in a mertailor. does anyone have any advice for what i should do?

Learning how to save money is a really big deal! Good job for keeping it up, and if you want that mertailor, you're more than half way there. In another year or so, there may be a better tail out there for you, and instead of a basic silicone tail, you may choose to continue saving and wait until you are fully grown and you have saved enough that you can get a custom tail from a manufacturer of your choice. For now, I recommend that you enjoy the tails that you have and just keep on swimming & saving!

Long and short of it is, that your spending and saving priorities may change over time, and that's ok!

My advice is to wait. Float around the forums and read all the reviews and keep shopping around. I didn't get my tail until I turned 23. Gives you a ton of time to save money as well

Definitely wait on silicone tails until you're sure you've stopped growing. Teenage growth spurts can happen suddenly and unexpectedly, and it'd be really sad to finally have gotten your silicone tail and find that it's too small after 6 months. Maybe keep half of what you've saved in your tail fun and spend the other half?

I know it is so tough to wait when you really, really want a custom tail of your own! That being said, I would suggest waiting quite a few more years to invest in a silicone tail. If you really want a new tail right now, why not take $100 or so of what you have saved and purchase a Mertailor eco tail? They are so pretty and the best part is, you won't outgrow it as quickly! Then you can keep the rest and save it for your silicone tail in the future. It would be too bad if you put all that hard-earned money into a tail and then outgrew it shortly after you got it. If you start saving a little bit along now, you might even have enough to get yourself a full silicone tail by the time you are done growing! Waiting stinks, but it will be totally worth it someday when you get that perfect tail and you can love and enjoy it for years and years to come!

As the others have said, you are definitely not done growing yet. If you got a nice tail now you wouldn't have much time to enjoy it before you outgrow it. I think it is a smart idea to wait some more years until you are sure you are done growing. You can use some of the money you have saved to buy other things of interest, but I would always have a fishy bank to keep some money set aside only for a mermaid tail.

There are other wonderful options for you to choose from - You could get some nice glittery paint and paint your own fabric mermaid tail. I have seen some very realistic fabric and neoprene tails. You could also make a sequin tail. I think sequin tails are very gorgeous! You can sew all the sequins on or you can glue them on with E6000. You can also experiment with using shiny fabrics and adding lots of extra fins to your tail.

I do have to say, if you're determined to get a mertailor the partial silicone is two pieces so you can replace the skin when you grow out of it. also the seams allow for you to make it bigger or smaller as you please. it's a bit more expensive. but you should look into another fabric tail, there's plenty of makers out there that have excellent work, or you can make one yourself!

I understand how you feel! I'm 14 and wanted a silicone tail for FOREVER. my third fabric tail should be shipped today, and I've been swimming in fabric tails since I was 11. The thing is, if you save up all the money for an expensive tail you'll definitely grow out of it. The measurements have to be so exact for silicone tails, and at age twelve, you grow so much. I did most of my growing at twelve so you would grow out of your tail so quickly.
I say wait for a while, and maybe try making your own fabric tail? it's not very hard- you and your friend could make one, and then you could do your own design and such. Wait until you're at least 15 (which is not fully grown by the way)
a silicone tail is something you stick with. you want it to fit for a long time.

oh absolutely wait to buy! Even at 15 you most likely won't be at your full height (and other dimensions like hip width etc change drastically during the teen years) I read somewhere that the female body doesn't finish the growing and refining of your shape until you're in your mid twenties.

IMHO, buying a silicone tail now is setting yourself up for sorrow. You are likely to grow during your wait time! If you do end up growing out of it before it gets there (or in the first few months) you may have a very hard time reselling it because it's itty bitty.

Treat this like a tattoo, figure out your design, save your money, look at your design every single day so you don't end up with something that you get sick of.


I see this all the time in the Irish Dance world. 8 year old girls are getting to Championship level and instead of buying a used solo dress the parents shell out thousands of dollars for a custom. Only to have the girl grow out of the dress between Feises. One mom I know was complaining about how much the dresses are costing her, she was so surprised when I pointed out the rack of used dresses (many of which fit her little girl) for a fraction of the cost
