How to make a large sturdy fluke?

I want to make a whale-like or dolphin-like tail in the future. If there any way I can modify or make my own sturdy, large fin?

The more I look at it, the more I wonder if there really is a Lunocet in there The fluke looks right, the angle looks right, but the attachment to the foot looks not right. The Lunocet is mounted on a jointed arm that extends behind your feet. Maybe he just made a look-alike, or used the Lunocet fluke to make the mold. Or maybe he mounted the Lunocet fluke in a different way.

I saw that the Mertailor is experimenting with tails that don't have monofin and stiffer silcone for foot pockets....so it could be stiffer silicone...but I'm not sure...

Be aware that the Lunocet fluke is not just solid rubber. It has an aluminum spar in it that runs from where it attaches at the center to just a couple of inches shy of the tip.
If Mertailor is making fins and foot pockets out of solid , stiff silicone, he still would not get a good whale-like tail without a spar in there.

Good point...I know of only one tail that he used no monofin because it's was at MerMainia....I was just tossing that idea out there.

That tail, and the whale tail, are a couple years old. There've been threads about it a couple times here before. HERE you can see pictures of the sculpt and mould. It looks like there's no monofin, judging by the way the fluke and body were sculpted as one piece, but I've never seen the tail in person so I can't say.


Besides the Lunocet, I know there also used to be the Dol-Fin monofin, http://www.dol-fin.net/ which has a pretty neat shape. I'm not certain if they still make them, though. You can also always cut your own dolphin-fluke shaped fin out of lexan.

Silicone also comes in a variety of hardnesses. You could concievably use a harder silicone for the fluke, to get that stiff shape, and a softer one for the body. MVD , and now Mertailor, make tails without monofins so it's certainly possible.
