Personally I would want my own tail, either self made or purchased from a tail maker. That way you would know that the fit would be right. Also, the tail would be 100% yours and not the property of the performing company. The down side would be the cost of course, since the tail wouldn't be provided to you.

Depends on what they give you. If they only use fabric, which most party entertainers do, most mermen don't like them. I'd upgrade to a neoprene, latex or silicon one, and then you could also book gigs outside the company without have to borrow or rent.
