View Full Version : Moderators?

I thought I remembered a thread about this a while back and I planned on necroing that instead of starting a new thread, but the search bar gave me nothing! Forgive me if there's one there and I missed it.

So, I know it has been discussed before briefly on a few different threads but, is there a reason we don't have moderators?

Iona and Mal do such a wonderful job of keeping the forum running, but with nearly 400 active members and new registrations every day, it can be a ton of work. I guess I'm thinking mostly of cleaning - we get tons of new members all the time, which is great, but many of them don't seem to bother to read the PM Iona sends them about how to use the forum and what useful threads there are which probably answer all their questions. And hey, they're new, they might not be used to forums, English might not be their first language, etc etc etc but all the new topics or topics posted in the wrong forum really clog up the place. I know Iona does a spring clean every once in a while and deletes/merges/closes threads, but there's just so much. It's gotten to the point where I don't even bother looking through a sub-forum to find something - I have to just use the search bar. There're so many duplicate threads, sometimes 15 or 20, that could all be merged into one and save a heck of a lot of space.

Obviously the more people you add to a position of power, the harder it is to make unanimous decisions. Should we delete threads that are just questions answered many times over, or add them to an older, established thread? Is it confusing for members to have their threads moved? How do we decide what thread should go in which forum? Is every mod allowed access to every forum or is it spread out between them? Is it okay to delete a post if it adds nothing to the conversation? There are lines there that everyone could agree on, but I don't think all of it is black and white.

I did consider just PMing Iona about this but I didn't want it to add to her pile of PMs to respond to, haha, and I wanted to know what the community thought! Of course it's Iona and Mal's decision. I have found it to work well on other forums I've been a part of in the past. There are members who have been here since meryuku and are still regular posters, so we could be sure they're committed enough to take the responsibility and well-versed in the forum to be able to direct new members etc.

What are everyone's thoughts? I really don't want to be presumptuous here, I'm just curious whether it would be a help to our admin.

I remember that thread (Raina started it).
Everyone agreed that it would be a great idea, but somehow nothing came off it.

Maybe it was too complicated to decide?

Ah, I found it!

Somehow adding Raina's username narrowed it down enough.

So now this thread is another example of the need for mods xD

Actually, I think this is a good idea. You have my vote if you ever decide to become a moderator :)

Aw, thank you arion<3! I would love to be a mod, but of course any application would have to take into account age of account, trustworthiness, community support, commitment to the site, actual skills as a mod, and free time. There are definitely people on here I would choose before myself xD

I think it comes down to Mal agreeing and coming up with terms. Iona is all for it

I'd definitely be interested in seeing a moderator system in place. It could help a lot with cutting drama down before it escalates out of hand like the Greenman Merfest situation, and could help get rid of bots/spammers/trolls a bit quicker (although I don't think there's too much of that anyway?)

I don't see many bots, no. One a month maybe. But who knows how many Iona has to deal with behind the scenes haha. Not all bots post, either - some just make phony accounts and never post at all which clogs up the member list (and probably bandwidth/storage/whatever/I'm no IT expert).

Just a probably silly question. Aren't Iona and Malinghi already moderators? I always thought so.

They're admins, mods are a step below that.

I think having Mods would be very beneficial, if there are enough qualified folks willing to take on the time and responsibility required.

I agree. Mods are a great idea because though we have a core community, we are still a pretty big group for two people to handle.

I still think this is just as important as the thread we started almost a year ago: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?7565-Mods-for-the-site&p=174347#post174347

I think it would be also good to perhaps update and clarify some of the mernetwork rules. With the reference to baiting (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?4062-What-happened-to-Jesse&p=173024&viewfull=1#post173024) not actually being on and pretty subjective...

I still think it be excellent to have a noob mod, so older members arent driven crazy by noobs who join and ask the same old questions without searching the forum. At this point I do think there needs to be more than just Iona and Mal dealing with drama. I feel like it's worse than ever (I sure as hell have a hard time keeping out of it with so much of it lately) and Iona has been busy with health stuff and it often falls to her to deal with it all. Mal comes in occasionally but isnt often active enough to understand the context of what's going on IMO.

I think a mod could clean up some of the threads that are essentially repeats of each other. Have a lot of similar ones floating around. Overall I think it could just use some more tidying up plus we have a bunch of features we tried out that didnt really work and just take up space and I think make navigation seem cluttered to new members (like classified forum, and classified system etc) There's also a few threads that could go for being starred and put at the top I think of their boards. Just a few things I am thinking

What do other members think?

Yeah, noob mod and tidying are the two reasons I'd love to see mods. Just need someone who doesn't mind answering the same questions over and over again ;)

This is such a good idea! I know a lot if times there's a ton of drama that could be so easily resolved it a mod stepped in. Or when so many noobs make duplicate posts like you guys were talking about

I'm all for mods. I feel like they would streamline a lot of the chatter. (Not that I do that much more than lurk, but I'm on here reading a lot of different threads every day and it can get staticky.)

Yes, mods would definitely be a good idea. In fact, I am amazed that the forum runs as smooth as it does without mods, but having them would help, especially when arguments get a little heated. :)

I know this is an old thread, but I completely agree that mods would be a fantastic idea. Maybe a mod for approving reviews could be good?
