View Full Version : Possible Third book- need input please

Okay so, my first book is starting to seem outdated to me right now. I think most of the info is still relevant but I have learned so much more that I could add, and I think the resource section needs an overhaul. I also know because it was my first one it's not as well put together as the second one.
A few people have suggested a revision but I feel like I'd be a jerk to republish the book and expect people to buy it again. I don't want anyone who has bought it to feel like it was a waste of money because I went ahead and made another version.
So I was thinking, what about if I created a supplement book with all the new and relevant info I have acquired, and combined it into a workbook for mermaids? An actual book they can write it to help them plan out things, find out what is important to them, and further the chances of success as a company? Of course, I'd also add funny and relevant stories along the way.
I basically want to make something as relevant as possible. A tool that's really going to continue helping. What sort of things would you want to see in it? For those who read the first book- were there topics you wanted more elaboration on? Were there things not covered at all that you'd like to see? Resources that need to be added in?
I'm really just toying with the idea for now and will probably spend this year fleshing it out. If I did publish it would be either closer to the end of the year, or at the beginning of 2016. I can't decide if it's a worthwhile venture or not. I really appreciate feedback specifically from people who have read one or both of my books. Thanks!

I feel there is more that could be said about society and mermen. I would love to read more about it, especially your view on it, what advices you could give to those going professional, etc. Maybe an input from Christian would be interesting. I don't know, just a suggestion :)

Hmm I may then conduct some interviews to gather information about mermen, so I can make a section about that. I'd much rather quote mermen of the community and post their perspective because it's more reliable than mine I think. great points. I'll also def get Sean to help me do a chapter on merwranglers!

I think this one could be like a survival guide.
BriannaPixieDee
01-18-2015, 02:19 PM
I think you could just continue where you left off and make a book about information you learned after your book was published and stuff not included that you think should be in there. Mermen being an example, maybe talk about how it helps people with chronic pain, the art behind it etc.
Kind of like a volume set so you can add on as you need. Then you're not republishing and providing all new information.

I think every once in a while it's best to have a revised edition (heck they always make revisions in the dictionary and other manuals and books) but I completely understand why you wouldn't want to.
I think a survival guide/workbook would be good in place of that.
I also second Arion's opinion. needs to happen.

I really really like the workbook idea, as a supplemental guide, merwrangling is a good idea, but yeah I know it's been done by a lot of people but goals/vision and how to put that together as a mermaid is a good idea.

I would totally buy a third book of yours, Raina (I've already got the first two)! Whether it's a revised version of your first book or a survival guide/workbook for new mers - both options sound intriguing and full of possibilities. Coming from someone who has really only just started on her mermaid journey, I'd probably lean towards a workbook to develop mersonas/business ideals/etc. And I second having a section on mermen and merwranglers! (Like, how to find a merwrangler if you can't think of anyone that you already know who might be willing to help out with that...or something? Maybe a detailed list/section about what kinds of things merwranglers are responsible for, and what sort of pay rate is reasonable?)

thanks for the input everyone! I'll keep on brainstorming. if you think of anything else please post it here. i've started a notebook hahaha
I've gotten to read a copy of your first book :)
Things I'd personally like to see:
* A handy-dandy checklist of things to remember to take to gigs (maybe even various supplemental lists for specific kinds of gigs)
* Maybe a section detailing various types of mers/mer archetypes - There's a lot of folks who don't know that there's a ton of "alternative"/darker-style mers out there. I know the "tropical/sunshiney" mers are the most common, and well-known, type of mer, but I'd like to see folks feeling that it's okay to be a "creepy mer" (possibly with some artwork, I'm sure there's a few mer-artists who would be fine with you using their work)
* Mermaidy things to do when you can't get to the water
* Maybe some mermaidy recipes/simple craft tutorials? (I have quite a few recipes saved myself)
* Natural solutions for us chemically-sensitive merfolk (alternatives to chemical cleaners, skin/hair care, makeup, etc.)
* As always, ideas of neat things to do with clients! :D
* Tips on taking nice pics/video underwater, breath holds, etc.
* Product recommendations - goggles, earplugs, noseplugs/clips, etc.
* DEFINITELY more about mermen! I'm loving the influx of merdudes we've been getting here and elsewhere in the community lately!
* Neat mer-mythology tidbits! I adore mythology and history :D Plus it's nice knowing where we "come from"

I love all the suggestions, and I hope you decide to make a third book. I LOOOVEEED your first book, (still trying to budget a tiny bit of cash for number two, but I'm so addicted to buying accesories I can't stop!)
I like the idea of it being a workbook, being able to write in it and stuff.
I also like the idea of interviews with mermen, and Merwrangler insight from Sean is a MUST! (I read an article he was quoted in today, that was awesome!)
Personally, when I was reading your first book I thought it would be really helpful if you included some example pages of forms that would be useful to starting a business. Like, I think you talked about writing a contract or something- it would have been nice to see an example of that. Or an example of financial paperwork, feedback forms, proposals for events, things like that. And more info on the legal stuff.
I had a bunch of other ideas too, but it's super late right now and my brain is functioning at about 10% So I'm gonna sleep (maybe) and then come post back here later when I can remember. Maybe I'll read your book again for inspiration <3
PS- This is kind of unrelated, but I had my first mermaid gig today! I did a nature box like yours, and the children LOVED it!! Thank you for writing your books, keep writing until your fingers fall off.

There actually are examples of that in the first book, and in the resource section there are links to templates online. I can't do financial stuff because I am canadian. Our taxes, business laws, applicable paperwork etc is different than anywhere else. It all depends on where people are coming from. Since the book is marketed world wide I had to just generally describe how people can go about things. So great ideas, it's just not as plausible as it sounds and can actually make me legally liable if I tell someone to do something and it's wrong in their country ;)
Maybe illustrated instructions on mermaid swimming tricks would be cool too if that's possible.
Illustrations can be problematic for different reasons in this format of a book but maybe I can do something with photos.

Twig has a coloring book for sale it's really cute and kids love it
Because I am canadian it is difficult for me to use online publishing programs to create coloring books, children's books, or photo books. Because of the specific laws and the IRS witholding every cent I make even though we have a treaty with the US and they aren't supposed. Right now the IRS takes 30% of my book earnings illegally. But they do that to all Canadians. Then give us mountains of paperwork to go through to prove we are canadian. They wont give me back the money they have taken, but they'll stop taking it from me in the future. And in 2 years I have not been able to get through to the, (this is very typical for self publishers from Canada. Had I a contract with a big publishers they would be my liaison for this and would make sure it gets done, however they'd keep the 30% anyway...) with kids books and coloring books they keep 100% and I get nothing. And I have been trying for years to get this sorted (very typical I've talked to many) so I cant really do anything like that until this finally gives.
Mermaid Aqua does amazing mermaid coloring books. I can't draw anyway haha. I have a children's book series I'd like to create and I am shopping it around to Canadian publishers.
I've been looking at the first two book covers and was wondering any chance we'll see mega rapidash on the cover of the third book?
I'd really love that. I feel like my book covers all show my evolution!

Sorry to hear about all the publishing nonsense had no idea that all went on :/
The covers for sure show your mermaid evolution. There's a huge difference between one and two and it's the same tail
perhaps in the new book you could have a section on how the monofins in the two tails differ performance wise?
like tricks, speed, maneuverability etc.
AniaR
02-06-2015, 02:45 PM
yeah I think that's a great idea! Maybe a more in depth look at monofins.
As far as titles I was thinking "The Fishy Business Companion" something like that haha!
Mermaid Enora
02-06-2015, 02:56 PM
I like that title idea!
the first book has a lot about tail types but not too much about monofins
also, anything in the vlogs that hasn't been covered in the first two books?
Side note, maybe a section for book and vlog on mermaid festivals?

Hey folks. I'm happy to announce I'll be co writing this third book with Mermaid Mutiny. She has a great business background along with photography, operations, and management. We are having a meeting tonight to brainstorm the topics to be covered.
Please let me know if there's any other info you'd like to know especially when it comes to areas that you didn't feel had enough coverage in the first book.
I want this third one to complete it all so that when you're done with it it has helped you map out your whole business plan! So you can physically take the book like a rough draft to help you create business plans, proposals, contracts, and more.
I'll also be redoing the resource section to bring it up to date!

Like I previously said in another tread, I would love to hear more about mermen :)
I feel there is a lot more that could be said. It would be very interesting to hear merman Christian's input on the subject. That part for the book could also help a lot of boys and guys to make their dream real instead of fearing what people or society could say on them out of hate, ignorance and such.

and maybe something about wearing wigs in/under water to protect your own hair? Just an idea. I have really thin hair and u can almost see my scalp when I put my hair together for a headdress or being under water. Just a suggestion, knowing I'm not the only one. :)

Perhaps a section on the recent outbreak of pools banning mermaid tails? How to communicate effectively with pool management/lifeguards so as to prevent problems and spread accurate information on mermaiding safely.
To keep from getting banned, before I go to a new pool I always check their website and read the rules. If they so no fins, I don't even bother trying to convince them otherwise. If they allow regular bi fins, then I call and ask if there are any restrictions such as fins in lap lane only. I tell them I have a monofin and explain that it is a piece of swim equipment used by freedivers. If that's allowed, then I go to the pool and use ONLY the monofin until I see how it goes over (usually the lifegaurds think it's awesome and want to know where I got it ;) ) THEN, after all that, I pull out the tail.
Now, I'm pretty lucky and live in a city with multiple pools, but I know not everyone has options. This is where a section detailing communication with lifeguards would be good. Like, "How To Convince Your Local Pool You Are Not Going To Drown Yourself (or Injure Anyone) and NOT Get Banned." Maybe by offering to take a swim test, both in and out of your tail (my pool makes everyone under the age of 16 do this to go in water deeper than 4 feet). And making sure lifeguards understand how monofins and tails work. Or staying in lap lanes during open swim or coming during adult swim hours to reduce crowding and the chance of accidentally whacking someone with your fluke (although honestly, the tail is BEHIND you, they are the ones swimming into you, not the other way around....)
As a professional mer who works with lots of pools, I'd assume you have some pretty good ideas on how to handle these issues.

Just giving this a bump!
Obviously since firing the other mermaid she wont be participating any longer in this book. I will leave her content ideas out (they were more to do with her expertise anyway and less to do with the overall vision, so that works!)
However I have been working a few months on fleshing this out and starting drafts. My goal is to have it published by the end of the year. Maybe a November publish date.
So please, while I am still in the mapping out stage, let me know if there's anything else?
So far I hear people want:
- forms they're allowed to photo copy for things like booking agreements, contracts, employee forms etc
-information expanded on from my blog such as working with other mermaids, health risks, photography etc
-updated resource section
-monofins
-mermen
-I'm going to do a section on aquarium swimming and tank swimming
-I'm going to do a section on wigs
-merwrangling and what to do when you don't have one
-making money on youtube
-in depth look at social networking with an updated list
-conventions
-continued personal stories
...and more!
What else would you like to learn? If I don't know it... I will research it!

Hi Raina! I don't had read your books yet, but hopefully will buy this month, and i don't know if you had put this subjection on your first book, but looking one thread in here other day came a thought on my mind... What type of tail and color i should choose for a particular work? I mean... have seen when mermaids do gigs for Kids they use more, pinks, purple, blues, Yellow... But looking some of Hannah videos as example the one she swim with sharks, she have her body painted in dark shades. So I suppose if it were swimming in an aquarium, depending on the species of fish and animals inside it would be good to use a tail in colors that do not call much attention to these animals? Color indicative for kids parties, adults and Aquarium !? Could you also put the requirements for those who plan to work in a aquarium. I hope I was clear in my suggestions. Hehehe sorry for my terrible English.:$

Anything here that is a repeat is new information and resources, or approached in a totally different manner :)

OK folks, I am finishing up the final draft this weekend, and sending it off to obtain my proof copy (which will still likely require some changes before final launch).
For those who may of missed it, we're having an online release party. Details are here: https://www.facebook.com/events/473083776231920/ I'll be livestreaming the ACTUAL party haha!
Here's my final table of contents. I wanted to add so much more. But it's already 100 pages bigger than the other books.
37292
The other books will be permanently going down in price to make way for this one and make it easier for people to obtain the set. :)
Thank you so much to all the people who helped make it happen. I will post the cover when it's ready!

I tried to make sure it's either new content, updated content, or totally expands on something that was only small in the other books. So nothing repetitive to the first ones :)

To shell-e-brate the publishing of my third book, I have decided to mark my current paper back books down %15 permanently! Whenever the publisher has sales, you'll also get the sale discount on top.
You do not need a code for the 15% off discount. However if you act now (June 20th) you can get the paperback versions at an additional 20% off with the code LULU20 at checkout. www.makemeamermaid.com
The proof copy finally got here just in time for the release. Approving final minor changes tonight :) I love it

I wish I could have helped out on this one, but my schedule (like yours, I'm sure) has been wall to wall.
I'm so proud of you! :mermaid kiss:
