Here's a thread for mers who also work and play as costumed faeries.

In my work I try to teach and inspire children about nature, animal welfare, and conservation. Music, literature, and costumed theatre/character acting are my tools.

Thus far my working character has been a standard mermaid. I'm just starting to explore the faery world and loving it. I've got a couple pairs of wings on order from Etsy to go with my upcoming new tail themes. I'm really excited about adding faery costuming, flight, etc, to my mermaid naturalist programs. As a water faery mermaid I can now take the kids into lessons about birds and insects and wetlands as well as larger aquatic habitats. Not to mention dragonflies and dragons! The faery world offers so much lush imagery and inspiration for my songwriting. My new persona as Mermaid Galene, Water Faery Naturalist, is really letting me soar!

I'm excited to become a blend of mer and fae, and I look forward to sharing that interest with other merfolk!

Bumped from another thread:

I was thinking that too as it might get a bit off track here soon.
There was a fairy thread before but it was mostly about a faenetwork similar to mernetwork. Not necessarily for showing off fairy whatnot. It might be nice to have that. Or a place for wing or head wreaths tutorials and such and the like.
Galene I'd like to see what a mermaid with wings might look like. My fairy wings are much too big to be worn with my tail I'd need to make a smaller set of wings for that.

I tried to choose smaller wings so they would work with me sitting in a tail. Once both pairs arrive, we'll see whether I can make it work! I do plan to start making my own wings when I can find the time. Hoping to come up with a swimmable version as well as sittable.

yay for more water fairies!

I'd love to incorporate wings in a swimmable costume, I haven't found a feasible way to do it though
(too much drag, and if the wings are really large and impressive, it's risky to use them underwater and getting tangled).
So far, I use wings outside and drop them when going in the water.

There are plenty wingless waterfairies anyway (naiads, nymphs, rusalki, vily), I have several waterspirit outfits which I use for waterballets that couldn't be done in a tail (splits come to mind).

There was a thread about those underwater wings (used to glide underwater), maybe that's a principle to make wings swimmable?

Hey, Echidna, welcome! I do think the concept of water faerie has so many wonderful possibilities! One could portray a shapeshifter, a chimera, or, as you say, naiaid or nereid type being. And those have parallels in the animal kingdom. The mimic octopus and dragonflies immediately come to mind. I want my character to represent links to real creatures and real habitats so that, through fantasy and myth, children will feel a deeper connection to the real world of nature.

I'm thinking swimmable wings would have to be rather small and fairly flat against the back to minimize drag. It would be easy to make some very detailed and lovely wings from neoprene, and I'm considering that. But neoprene is so floaty, it might try to pull one up to the surface without weights, and swimming with a weight on the back sounds dangerous.

I remember that underwater wing thread, now that you mention it. They were essentially hanggliding at serious depth with the contraption. Will have to check that out again...

I was contemplating a water fairy for dry gigs. Fancy Fairy has some beautiful water inspired wings and I started discussing with her about the possibility of swimmable wings.

I don't have any swimmable wings as of yet. I think for now I'll plan on keeping the mermaid and fairy stuff separate since I'm just getting into mermaiding.
But since I just figured out how to post photos a little bit ago.....here's my wings!

Those are really pretty wings, Enora! They're gorgeous. I'm new to mermaiding, and have always loved mermaids and fairies and would be interested in doing both. I know mermaid Harmony does both, and both seem feasible; as for wings underwater..... That sounds SUPER cool, but I have no clue how one would go about making such.

Love this, yeah the thread I started a while back was to see if there's a place like this for fae, and there are forums but it's also a catch all for pagans, circles, LARPers, and performers, so lots of interesting information, but a lot to sort through.

Sherielle, where'd you get such a big flower??
I want one to experiment with some sort of an umbrella.
Galene, my wings are made of drop ceiling/chain link fence repair wire from home depot, spray adhesive, jewelry wire, electrical tape, and cellophane.
The wings are quite heavy and have a sturdy and snug fitting corset to hold them up.

I've been a fae folk longer than I've been a mermaid... Well, in costume, anyways! I've been both at heart since I was a child :)

I've made several sets of wings, using the pantyhose method (though I really, really decorated mine so they looked very nice), and I'd like to make some out of cellophane or the right fabric soon. I usually use disassembled coat hangers for the wire, LOL!

I make floral crowns as well, I'd love to make a tutorial for my method, but I haven't got the supplies to actually show you... Though I could totally illustrate it if you'd like!

So I spent the evening meeting my ice faerie wings. Squeee! The unpacking was a pain, with glitter all over the kitchen and the contents of the box reeking nauseatingly of perfume. And I could see that the flimsy straps included were useless. But then I put those pretty babies on, and fell in loooooove! :swoon:

Thanks, Miyu! The ice wings need a few finishing touches. I'm going to wrap the antenna/ base wires in white feather boa to make it more of a moth and to fit with the trumpeter swan theme of my first winged gig. I also have a silver rose to cover the stabilizer bar, and I'll make some heavy duty padded and decorated backpack straps.

Mermaid Enora

galene, if you have a corset the stabilizer bar could possibly sit down that to hold the wings up if its sturdy enough wire?
that way no straps would be showing at all.
My wings have a huge stabilizer bar that sits down my corset.

Sherielle
01-21-2015, 10:04 AM
Galene, the wings are lovely!

Mermaid Galene
01-21-2015, 11:21 AM
That's something I wanted to ask about, Enora. I've always been leery of boned corsets because I get costal chondritis (inflammation of the cartilages that hold the ribs together) when too much pressure is put on my ribcage. I also have some sensitive spots on my spine, and I wouldn't want metal digging in there. OTOH, I definitely see the advantage of wearing a corset with wings. I just bought this pattern on Etsy:

26809

26811

Do you think the wing bar would be stable enough tucked down into the vest if the vest has no boning? Or would the wing bar just wobble more and dig into my back? I suppose I could cushion the bar with foam inside the vest. That might hold it steady while at the same time keeping it from hurting me.

Sherielle
01-21-2015, 12:13 PM
What I did with my wing bar (the u shape) is sandwich it between two pieces of thick leather. I glued it with gorilla glue and put holes in it so I could further stabilize it with zip ties. It is so comfortable.

Miyu
01-21-2015, 02:03 PM
Galene, I would reinforce the seams in the back quite sturdily, at least, if you plan on having no boning - if it's floppy at all, the wings could eventually wear down the back with strain and fall out! Especially if the wind catches it or the like. I'm thinking just making some mega-reinforced back seams, possibly with some "cording" boning (either just in the seams area or across the whole back), could work well for you. Back in the day before actual boning in corsets, they used to use stiff cords or reeds, LOTS of them, to stiffen a corset. This past summer I got to handle a gorgeous corset boned in this way, and it was simply marvelous! Another idea is some basic plastic boning just in the back seams area.

Sherielle
01-21-2015, 03:52 PM
The large zip ties work amazingly well as corset boning. And I'm with Miyu in that you could just bone the back of the bodice. Actually, the bodice I'm wearing in my picture doesn't have any boning except at the front opening where it laces up.

Mermaid Enora
01-21-2015, 04:47 PM
the pattern looks fine. My sister made a wing holster to hold her humongous wings. it looks very similar to that pattern with the shoulder pieces except it only extends about 4 inches below her bra line. It has a pocket at the back that the wings sit in.
she always says its very comfortable. There's no boning in the holster.
I have two corsets that I use and both have nylon boning in them. No metal.
unfortunately I don't have a pic of the wing holster as it's always under her tops.
26824
here's a pic of all our wings together. Her's are so much bigger! mine used to be the biggest, but she made another pair.
Our dad calls it wing envy. haha
I think the pattern you've chosen should be fine without boning as long as it fits snuggly to you it should hold you wings without problem. Since they're not hugely oversized wings.
in fact if you made a cropped corset type thing you could even format it to look like a mermaid top as well to tie the whole concept together.

Thanks for all the tips, everybody! I think I'm going to have to try several approaches and see what works best. I've built lots of puppet stages, props, and animal training tools over the years, so I'm fairly good at mechanical engineering. I just have to find some time for experimentation.

I have a pair of large fairy wings that I started on but stopped for one reason or another. The basic framing is done so it wouldn't take much to finish them. They are for a Queen Mab outfit I have designed. And now that I know so much more about wire wrapping, I think I need to get them out again and try to get them finished.

Oooh hey I may totally have to make myself some more wings soon, since Morticia's making me that prototype tail, and the fluke mold she's created for mine IS called the "Titania"... ;)

The fluke design so far is sooooo cuuuuute too, it's one of the smallest nice silicone flukes I've seen! But it's totally and completely perfect for me, because I am a very petite person, and a very large fluke would not be so easy for regular swimming or doing tricks (I do have plans to have a larger-fluked tail eventually, but that is more of an art tail, and because I have a short-person complex and want a big fluke to show off in sometimes dangit LOL)

Hmm, I may have to alter my fairy-colours to match my coming tail, since the fluke is just too perfect for a water-fairie ;)

Also, if anyone lives within the vicinity, check out the PA Fae Fest(the Spoutwood Faerie Fest (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spoutwood.org%2Ffairie-festival&ei=71HJVKnXAuOxsAT3yYLIBg&usg=AFQjCNHY5YDBa4MD-VfYGz2iVcKfOPFQiA&sig2=CXRYoHS_o7x5R0hee1usmw&bvm=bv.84607526,d.cWc))! It's my stomping grounds, and I'm actually getting involved with the planning committee this year. Super excited. It's actually one of the bigger faery fests, from what I hear. Super great time.

I've always gone to fairy festivals, but only recently am I getting into the actual fairy costuming - the past couple of years of so. I do a modified "Mermaid Fairy," (flowy skirts make for easier dancing than fins) hopefully I'll be able to involve actual wings this year lol. I'm thinking of hand-painting/dying some silk and attaching it to a wire frame to create a ripple/wave-type look, and attaching it to my skirt so it looks like fins? I LOVE those big, papery wings, like some of you have posted! Twig the Fairy has a pair, and every time I see her I Ooh and Aah.

Ok, a bunch of costumes and pictures here:

First, I went as Medusa (I figured I did a pretty awesome job at being the most hideous woman in mythology) one Halloween, and it still is a fun costume to break out on occassssssion.

27028
27029
27030
27031

Next, I got a really awesome pair of wings at Faeriecon East one year from the sadly defunct Spectrum Studios. I used them for a cupid costume (the myth of Cupid and Psyche is my favorite), and for a lot of Christmas parties.

27032
27033
27034
27035
27036
27037
27038
27039

I went as a Djinni for Halloween one year, and wore the costume again to Faeriecon once. The wings, alas, aren't very resilient, though, and have a few tears, but they're still cool.
27040

I constructed a full Baba Yaga costume (complete with hut and chicken feet) this last Halloween, and it was awesome!
27041
27042
27043

I also went as my star sign, Sagittarius, one year :)
27044
27045
27046

And my friend had a mythical creature costume party with a humorous theme, so I went as a Faerie Godfather, there to make Cinderella an offer she couldn't refuse, and help Sleeping Beauty sleep with the fishes. I even constructed a Fae-dora. The wings I got at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
27047
27048
27049
27050
27051

I also have these really cool wings that can unfold and fold at the pull of two thumb cords, and I often use them as a gargoyle costume.
27052
27053
27054

I also went as Jack Frost from The Rise of the Guardians for Halloween the year before last. In hindsight, I probably should've worn this costume to the Merfest ball.
27055
27056
27057

And I just got some cool bat wings and a red cloak with wing-slits from Amazon, both Specter Studios products.
27058
27059

I also have a bunch of other wings and faerie costumes.

I get a lot of my wings and props from Party City. The gargoyle wings are part of a set called "Angel from Hell (http://m.partycity.com/products/angel%2Bfrom%2Bhell%2Baccessory%2Bkit)" and include a weird, skull-like mask that I have yet to find a use for.

I also own the following of Party City's wing products:
Tinsel Angel Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/tinsel+wings), which I used for my costume as fins for the ball at NC Merfest
Mystical Fairy Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/mystical+fairy+wings)
Archangel Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/archangel+wings), which I haven't quite found a use for yet, since the gargoyle wings are so much cooler and less fragile.
Rainbow Glitter Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/rainbow+glitter+wings), which I hope to wear to a Pride event sometime
Peacock Feather Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/peacock+feather+wings), which I wanted to wear with my peacock costume, but that proved impossible with the tail.
And Alluring Butterfly Wings (http://m.partycity.com/products/alluring+butterfly+wings), which I wore with a similar-looking mask last year to a pre-Halloween party

I just discovered a nifty little mobile device app called "Fairy Magic." It uses your device's camera to put little interactive faeries all over your real environment. You can make music for them, tickle them, and get them to repeat what you say. Some pretty heavy duty entertainment industry creative types (Lucasfilm & Avatar, among others) developed the app. Fun!
