Ok so I've searched the site and can't find anyone doing mermaid armour, and I thought to myself why not? I plan on trying something when I finally have money for a tail. The tomboy in me practically screams for it.
I could make it out of sequins and use netting for the straps or if I could make it out of silicone I could make it look like shark skin.
The point is I'm just getting the idea out there I mean imagine how cool it would be to hide googles with a helmet. Hair stays dry (maybe)and water out of you eyes :)

You'd probably have to search for "armor", not "armour", as most of the site is American ;D
Here are a few threads I found on the topic:
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?8615-Mermaid-Armor
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?9985-Merman-Armor-Top-concept
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2953-Kanti-s-merman-fashion-designs
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2954-vence-micheal-s-merman-fashion-designs
And there are some armour ideas in this thread, too:

Yes!! I've always wanted to see mermaid armor! I saw Organic Armor made some armor that was swimable, but I haven't seen any aquatic armor! Please, keep us posted! I can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

Thanks Kelda for the links, I searched both but it think it's just tapatalk being weird since then forums don't show up in a search.
I love organic armour too Lotus :) I will probably work with sequins as its really really expensive to buy silicone in the uk

Yeah, unfortunately the mobile versions of the site don't seem to have the same capabilities in terms of searching :\

I have a pretty awesome "mermaid metal" corset from organic armor. they're amazing. you should seriously invest in one. you can't swim in it but it would make for some awesome dry events

So I'm bringing back this thread because I didn't want to start a new one.
I'm about to put an order in for Organic Armor, but I'm torn between getting pauldrons or a circlet. What are your thoughts? Keep in mind, I'm changing my look with my new tail that has tribal print on it- so I'm going for something that resembles a warrior.

I would say pauldrons fit better on that theme.

Love the armor idea, I totally recommend to use worbla, and if you paint then seal it a few times you should be able to swim in it too... (if you want)
There are a lot of Cosplay armor tutorials if you are interested in looking for ideas on construction.

Are those wings coral wings?!
Many years ago I devised an aquatic half-fey with purple sea fan wings for a D&D game. Years later I discovered that a German band I enjoy was playing in the States, at an event called FaerieCon. So I said to myself "What the heck, I'm already a merman" and ordered custom purple sea fan wings from Fancy Fairy Wings & Things (http://www.fancyfairy.com)! I suppose that makes me a merfairy or merfae; instead of half-human and half-fish I am thirded between human, faerie, and merfolk.

Me too! I assume it's a bit of a risk though to have your fluke actually punctured like that. If the ring caught caught on something, you could end up tearing your fluke up pretty bad.

Oh...like the cosplay thread, this is very, VERY MUCH my jam. *NodNodNod*
I'm looking at working on an armored mer-sona myself, and will be doing much of my armor in Worbla (thermo-plastic, as an FYI). I have worked with it before in the past for cosplay, so I'm getting better with it all the time. I think it would work really, really well for metallic armor, but it would have to be "sized fit".Organic Armor (OMG, SO MUCH LOVE for their stuff) uses a product called Oomoo to make their stuff. Its basically the same stuff that Smooth-On sells for their 2D flat back casting kits. It can be tricky to work with, but once you get the hang of it, there are LOADS of stuff you can make with it.
Oomoo is a thicker silicone than Dragonskin, and can be pigmented with the colour range pigments they have in stock. I'm thinking that a molding powder would have to go on first for the metallic effect, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'd have to try it myself to be sure.
That said, I think my preference will always be towards Worbla and leather. Leather isn't good for water mind you, but gives the necessary freedom of movement for layering pieces. Netting might work better and keep in with the "merfolk" theme.

Hi Lotus!
Absolutely! I can talk about Worbla and armor until the fish swim home! My only caveat would be how to seal the paint job so that water/ chlorine/ salt doesn't eat away at it. I'm not sure a simple clear coat of varnish would do the trick or not. I'm wondering if I'd have to top coat it with resin? Hmmm...

The scalemail doesn't weigh you down any? Or are you just a really strong swimmer? I was planning on making a tail that has a sea dragon theme and I though of using black scalemail, but I don't want to be dragged down. :)

I am naturally very buoyant so the additional weight wasn't an issue for me. I had to drop a 2 pound weight down my tail just to stay under a few seconds to get some photos. I am inspired to make a tail with the aluminum scales. I would use neoprene, which I believe would counteract the weight a bit. If you aren't naturally buoyant a tail done in scales could be too heavy
