So, the only thing at the moment keeping me from being a party mermaid is the fact that if someone so much as touches me with birthday cake on their hands, I nearly go into anaphylactic shock. My mom came up with an idea, and it has me pretty excited. What if she baked a gluten-free cake for the parties? She has talked about opening a bakery in the past (Her gluten-free stuff is THAT good).
Do ya'll think this would work out? I'd be willing to meet with potential clients and bring cake samples for them to try if they worry the taste won't be up to par.

I think some customers would go for it, but definitely not most? Those that need gluten free for their child would definitely agree to it I feel if the pricing was right and all, but now with mixes at the store many moms can make pretty good gluten free cakes at home for their children. I don't think most parents would want gluten free cakes though...I could be wrong, but most moms want a tasty good cake for their kid's birthdays. Not that gluten free ISN'T still tasty, but it's generally known that by taking out gluten from a pastry it's going to taste different.

I have severe celiac disease (edibility, I don't have any issues touching it other than I avoid it generally) so I know what you mean though. Could always tell the kids mermaids are allergic to cake/human food--that's what I planned on doing if it ever came up for me. :)

some party princess companies do provide more than just a princess. Some provide cakes, favors, decorations, and the like. Maybe if you offered more than just the cake it would have some interest. kinda like a party package maybe. Not sure how a potential customer would respond to just a cake.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of a package deal--And there is a princess party company who provides cupcakes, sprite, and tableware in my town too, so I know someone has made a go of it. My mom suggested only mentioning the cake is gluten free if I'm outright asked, but I'm not sure how I feel about that (She has brought cake to church, and people ask for her recipe. She mentions the cake is gluten free, and people are shocked. They had no idea. One person said "I don't care. It's delicious and I want your recipe" lol). Another thing I might do is provide custom invites for the parents to send out. There's a print shop just down my street and they are super cheap. Party favors are a given--Not sure what I'll use, but I want to have my website on them.

Just be aware of any applicable bylaws about food handling :)

Swim with the children before they are served cake. I have never been around cake at any mermaid birthday party.
