View Full Version : Monofin that won't inhibit Silicone

I'm endeavoring to make a tail out of a two part mold, but I will need to somehow encase the monofin into the silicone while that's being poured. I haven't quite figured this out yet, however, a good start is to look for a monofin that won't inhibit the silicone curing!

Does anyone know of a monofin that won't do this? I know the finis trainer is a great monofin?

Thanks for any and all help!

Just use a fiberglass monofin and wrap the foot pockets and any rubber piece with saran wrap or tape.

Most of the Hydra monofin is made of polypropylene plastic, a very inert, safe plastic. I don't believe it inhibits cure, but I'm not sure; I think part of it may also be made of rubber.

Most footpockets are made of rubber, that's usually where the most problems are.

....wrap the foot pockets and any rubber piece with saran wrap or tape.

I'm curious as to how well this method works. I'd love to get some feedback on this specific part of the tailmaking process, from others making their own silicone tails, with monofins such as the Finis Competitor or trainers.
The foot pockets on those are listed as being "marine grade rubber", so I'm a bit cautious on getting them near silicone.
I know the Finis Competitor is used in many silicone tails by top tailmakers, and I understand how to insert it between the fluke layers.
Reading through all the threads, I'm trying to get more tips on how to keep the curing process consistent (and so I don't end up pulling my hair out from frustration, lol!) From what others have said, the rubber foot pockets can make the silicone stay gooey and not cure properly, so if Saran Wrap works for people, awesome!
