My Awareness Tail

I have been looking into creating a silicone mermaid tail. I've reviewed as much as I can review and think I'm going to give it a go.

I've purchased a clear Hydra monofin and will hopefully receive it around the end of the month, providing all goes well. There is also a store close to where I live that has monster clay, shell shock, and silicone so at least I don't have to order them online, which will save a ton of money.

This is going to be a special project. Most mermaids work on raising awareness of our oceans; but, I'm going to step outside the norm. My tail will be geared towards raising awareness for a mental illness that affects millions, OCD. I'm not sure how long it will take to complete but I'm looking forward to starting soon.

Hopefully over this weekend, my husband and I will be cleaning up our basement to use as a work zone for his project and mine. It is a huge job, and hopefully we can open up space by getting rid of some things.

Also, I've been looking into whether to try foam scales or clay scales. I'm leaning towards clay because you can sculpt and design them as opposed to foam which is pretty much as is. Also, I've seen people having a lot of trouble with foam scales. We are planning to head out to a place that sells supplies tomorrow to pick up a few things we need. (He's working on a slot car set). Guess we each have to have our hobbies.

I have a different fluke design that I'm working on. I may not use the above design. I'm also revamping my color scheme and pattern. We are heading out this weekend, health and time permitting, to pick up clay and molding material.

I decided the latest fluke I made isn't going to work :( the silicone will be too thin along the edges so I'm going with my the first cardboard design.

My basement is just about ready to go for my work space. I want to try and work with the clay later and see how it goes.

I took the lid off my monster clay and was surprised by how hard it was. One thing I noticed and I hope it doesn't cause trouble but the lid doesn't fit properly on the container, although I don't think monster clay dries out.

Just a word of warning, anyone who wants to use mica pigments, becareful of the ingredients, anything with ultramarines or tin oxide could be potential inhibitors when being used with silicone. Tin compounds cause issues with silicone as do ultramarines.

My daughter and I were working with the Monster Maker clay today. Talk about a challenge. I've never really designed anything with clay before. I decided to make a mold so that I could ensure that the scales were all the same size. Not sure which of these scales I'm going to use yet. Once the clay cools we'll be pouring in the hydrocal. First attempt at the hydrocal. I've never worked with hydrocal before so I'm not sure how this is going to turn out. I'm hoping it doesn't stick to the surface, almost forgot to put vasoline down: 27624

The mini scale mold above didn't really turn out well because i didn't mix enough hydrocal so when I made more and put it on top it left gaps in the mold. Anyway, I've been working on my fluke today. I discovered I can't sit on the floor for very long because of my neck so gotta clear another higher work space, but here are some pictures: 27652 27651

The clay fluke is nearly finished taking it's main shape. It will be tricky smoothing it out, unless I just make the mold and sand the plaster instead: 27819

The best way I found for smoothing it is paint scrapers of various sizes. They were very cheap for me, and by using the same motion as you would if you were plastering a wall, it comes out quite smooth. Good luck!

Kate - I picked up a wall scraper and a razor like scraper. The wall scraper didn't work well. The razor one, after I got the hang of it, seems to work okay. Gonna take a while to get a smooth finish though since it's smaller but whatever gets the job done *lol*

It helps if the clay is a little warm, but not too warm. I find that if you go over it gently with the scraper a few times, the friction is enough to let the top layer of clay flow.

Any new updates? It might be cool to smooth it in an up-and-down motion so that if there are still slight lines they will look sort of like more fin-detail on the fluke, not unintentional side swipes of clay.
