I made a post last week asking for advice to talk to news stations. My interview with Joplin KOAM/Fox 14 was this morning, and my story will air tonight! I'm so excited about it! He even brought a GoPro for me to swim with underwater. :D

I acknowledge that there are a ton of negative comments on the KOAM Facebook video. However, any that I have replied to either don't reply back, or they backtrack and try to apologize. One person commented "This is dumb y is it on the news" and after I replied (politely), he said, "Oh, sorry I just didn't know what it was for. Sorry I understand now." Those types of comments always make me laugh a bit.

Ignore the haters!! Seriously!! Back in the Summer a couple of us local mermaids went to the local news station just b/c we wanted our photo in our tails in front of the Sand Desk. At that moment one of the weather anchors just happened to be coming in to work and she was so excited. She wanted copies of our photos within the hour and she talked about us and put our photos on her weather broadcast. photos were posted on several of their blogs and there were quite a few negative comments as well. I got super defensive as one was my 9 year old daughter, so seriously only as asshat is going to be mean to a kid or a mermaid. LOL. I wouldn't even respond to some of them. Some people feed off that negativity and are just trying to get you worked up. don't give them the satisfaction. I know its hard. believe me. LOL

It's incredible how many random strangers are supporting me, though! A few people have actually posted paragraph long comments about how polite and professional I am to people who say rude things.
One lady posted a comment that simply said "This is retarded." Instead of saying a sarcastic, "of course," I said that calling someone retarded is unacceptable, not because it offended me to be called that, but that it's horribly offensive to those with special needs. I said that it's more offensive to use an outdated term as a negative thing. Not one, but TWO women posted about their family members who had special needs and how it was wonderful of me to say such kind things. I was about to comment to not bash the woman for something she probably didn't mean, and that I hoped that everyone would understand that calling someone "retarded" is COMPLETELY unacceptable and harmful, but she deleted her comment, and with it, the thread.
It amazes me how supportive strangers can be just because of some sensible kind words.

Wow, I think you did the right thing. I just can't even fathom why some people could be so mean :anger explode: Who knew people out there were so hateful until the last 10, 15 years with the internet and social media!
