Hey all,

So I know I am not yet the most well known around here and haven't been around here that long but I am a mermaid at heart! I know most are saving for there own tail and I am too but I also needed some help to get my dream tail in the future as it is so original it is going to cost me a lot to get it.

I also know that you may not be able to help which is fine but if anyone could like and share it around and my story I would so appreciate it! Basically I am now 29 and have been living the last 9 years with an ankle injury (including 3 surgeries and many re injuries from physios) I have been out of work for 3 plus years since my company that I worked for was taken over by another and I am now struggling to find work due to the fact that 1 I have to wear a custom AFO brace to prevent anymore injuries to my once repaired ligaments by going over on them and 2 the fact that I am getting older and only have work experience in coles and for 2 and a bit years whilst I did a cert 2 in business admin.

I also have Asbergers syndrome and right now my only way of paying the bills etc is through the disability pension I get and I have to put food and the bills first over my other desires.

So I guess I had to finally suck it up and ask for help to get my dream tail. I also plan on saving whatever I can however I can towards getting my tail too and if you could only help by at least sharing it I would so appreciate it.

I have the full amount there but I don't count on getting the full amount I still plan on getting whatever I can aside in savings towards it.

As for what I want it for is to be able to volunteer at things and give kids joy and happiness, I would love to start doing childrens parties as a hobby and I also want to be able to use it to go swimming in our reefs in Australia and promote via my Facebook page the different creatures out there and try to get some awareness out so future kids can have the experiences we do. Basically it is my dream to do these things but I need help to achieve it.

If you're hoping for a silicone tail, that may not be the best idea with an ankle injury or weak ankles. You might want to try a fabric tail with such disabilities. Goodluck though!

Fins/momofins are hard on the ankles. Have you tried using them and practicing the dolphin kick yet?

I am building up strength as we speak with my ankle and will be trying a monofin in small amounts soon :) Thanks for the info though and I don't expect it to happen fast as I am saving for it myself and plan on building up my ankle strength in the meantime and I don't just want to stick to a fabric tail I want to eventually go silicone but thanks for the info!

And the honesty but I plan on doing my best to slowly get stronger in my feet as I don't want to re injure them again! But thanks for being honest all am waiting to hear back from my surgeon if this will be possible or not. Or weather I will have to stick with fabric tails and never have my dream tail :(

Thanks all have decided if I can't do the silicone tail cause of my ankle which I know you are right that I will look at doing a sequin tail instead and thanks for helping me to see the realization of this all! I think you could do amazing things with sequins with that design. If you did sequins sewn onto neoprene, it would give you the stiffness I think you'd be looking for, with the additional bonus that you could add wiggle room to your ankle area (in my head, i'm seeing a little ankle door with added supports that you could adjust for less or more support as you need, depending on your ankle condition when you're wearing it, which you wouldn't be able to do with silicone.)

Just keep in mind that the more fabric that you add to the end of the monofin, the heavier it's going to get. I have a fabric betta tail at home, and it has a TON of drag. You might want to focus more on dry gigs once you do get a tail until your ankles have full strength.

Thanks all either way I am planning to save my butt off for this tail as I really do want to achieve these things :) I feel it would be worth getting the message out there! I saw on your page you've decided to go with a Mernation tail. But IMO ankle injuries and silicone tails are not at all compatible.
I had a very minor issue with my ankle for several months last year, just enough to feel a twinge of pain if I was on my feet for hours at at time. In the course of ONE dry photoshoot it went from that to a full on injury. Just sitting in the tail, with the foot pockets and weight of the fluke and tightness of the silicone, put me in a TON of pain. By the time I took the tail off it was agonizing to get out of, and I sobbed once I was out it was so painful. I thought I would have to have someone carry me from the beach (someone carried my tail and bags and I cried and hobbled along), and was stuck on the couch for months after. Had to go see a doctor and have xrays taken, all that. I was going into physical therapy, had the appointments set up and was waiting for insurance approval, until an amazing person (who is a massage therapist and chiropractor) worked on me and finally set me straight (thank god).

I'm sure you know well, from your story, that once you injure and re injure an ankle it can become permanently compromised. If you've reinjured your ankle in physical therapy multiple times, and had to have multiple surgeries, it sounds like the chances of you injuring your ankle due to the weight and force of a silicone tail is pretty dang high. Is it really worth it? In the end it's your call- your body, your health, but also your consequences. I just want to make sure you've REALLY thought this all the way through.
I know well that compromises due to health issues suck, a lot. But most if not all of the time, compromises like that are worth it for your health. Just trying to look out :)

silicone tails kills your ankles. they're super tight and keep your toes pointed with a lot of weight. I specifically had my ankle area created "too big" because of the pain it caused me and I dont even have an injury. I'd be a bit concerned that you might be jumping too far too fast. Maybe work with fabric first and see how you feel. I started in fabric and worked my way up, and I suffer from chronic mobility issues.

I was in a car accident a few years back and I'm sure making a silicone tail probably isn't the best for me, but you know what, I'm going to do it anyway! If it's your hearts desire, do it! Swimming is great therapy, but I would recommend swimming with a monofin first and see how it goes :)

No one wants to discourage your dreams. The only thing people are worried about is permanetly injurying yourself, or risking drowning.

A good solution is to see a doctor and they can help you reach your ankle goal in the safest way possible.

Thanks but my doctors won't talk to me anymore now I am recovering at least the new one didn't want to see me again and my previous one won't talk to me anymore either so please just leave it alone that is why I didn't want to continue the discussion here I just need to be left alone please!

To think etc and really it is discouraging my dreams all I want is a silicone tail that is it and I will never have it with everyone constantly doing this. Gahhhhhhhh And I am a strong swimmer I won't drown but please just leave me alone with it all I really don't need this right now!

I don't think anyone is trying to discourage you, it's more so that people are concerned for your safety and your well being. I sprained my ankle near the end of the summer and continued to do mermaid stuff and it was without a doubt the most painful thing I ever did, it made my ankle worse. I couldn't imagine having had a serious ankle injury and going straight for a silicone tail. From what I have heard, MerNation's tails have a fairly heavy fluke as well, I would hate to see you further injure yourself :(

New doctors wont take me and I can't afford it all I know is that I have been told I should have no limitations and should be able to do everything I want once it is all healed and the muscle has had the chance to build with my brace and I don't need the doctors anymore as my ankle is getting better each and every day!

And I am in Australia they no longer respond cause I don't need them anymore I have my surgeons mobile number but didn't get a response last time so I didn't bother again cause thanks to the brace I wear I am able to do anything and everything I could ever wish for and in a year I will be out of that and good as gold! Its better now than it has been in the last 9 years and trust me I know

I'm glad you don't want to give up on your dream of mermaiding, but I strongly urge you to tell MerNation about your ankle issues and ask if there's anything they can do to help you to keep from reinjuring your ankle or putting yourself in danger in the water. I told them they said to ask my doctor which all I have from my doctor is there should be no problems with the brace and I should be able to do everything when I asked about the tail they gave me no response so really I don't know what to do I can see evryone elses opinions but please I need time to think and decide and work things out! Honestly I am kinda upset at how everyone else gets silicone tails where I can't!

I honestly don't know what I am going to do but I am feeling very discouraged about the whole mermaiding thing in general right now! That's awesome. Can't wait til you start your sequin tail and your own spin on it. I don't know how I'll wait til MerQuest to be able to see it in person (merson?) but I'll try and be patient :)

I understand dreaming about having a silicone tail. I am very new to mermaiding and getting to the point where I can seriously consider making a silicone tail seems so far away. I already have a design that I want, and the design I don't think could be created with fabric or sequins - but for me, even just swimming in the monofin for the first time was good enough and made me so happy. Then swimming in my simple fabric tail was amazing as well. So now I don't really care how long it takes for me to be ready for a silicone tail. A lot of the mers on here are such great swimmers and have such beautiful silicone tails, but they all had to start from somewhere, and I think most of them started with just a simple fabric tail and little to no experience with swimming like a mermaid. I think you have a kick butt mermaid tail design, and I am sure you will be able to work your way towards getting that dream tail from those drawings.

Just a side note, Mermaid Hannah and Mermaid Kariel are two well known mermaids that are amazing and they swim with sequin tails. I know silicone tails are awesome, but even to be a pro mermaid you don't need a silicone tail. I am not saying you shouldn't have a silicone tail, I am just saying the other options are still beautiful.

LOL thanks I guess really sequin tails aren't that bad I guess I will just stand out from the crowd lol and rather than a wardrobe of silicone tails I can have a wardrobe of sequin tails! I have designs in motion for a peacock mantis, I have a design on the go for a she creature/peacock mantis design on the go too!

So maybe really sequins aren't that bad as you don't see that many of them and all I will say is the tail you see at the top of this thread will be in sequins too!

Don't feel discouraged or upset. No one is trying to discourage you or take away your dreams. I think it wasn't really clear at first just how good or bad your ankle is. Since it sounds like it is quickly on the mend I am sure you can make your dreams come true. Not to say that if you had a permanent bad ankle you couldn't swim in a nice tail - I saw a video recently of a lady who didn't have the lower part of her legs swim in a prosthetic mermaid tail. My boyfriend was born with a clubbed foot and he had surgery to fix his foot when he was little, but his foot often hurts, especially around his ankle, and he can't do some things because of his bad foot. His foot will always be this way. He swam in my monofin a bit and he loves it. He does very well in it and I don't think it bothers his foot.

No one wants to upset you. The main thing is that we want you to be able to have your dream, but while having your dream be safe about it - we all have to consider safety when it comes to mermaiding...Having someone around to save us if something goes wrong, being careful not to hit your head when doing a flip in the water, being mindful of sea life, etc. No one wants someone to get hurt.

I can see your point Minx Fox and thanks for explaining and I realise people didn't want to upset me! I can see that now! But I am starting to see maybe I can do things with my future tails that I couldn't get with silicone too by using sequins :)

Thanks for your advice everyone :) I have decided to be one of the rare sequin tail mermaids as I can think of some amazing features that could make my tails look pretty realistic with sequins :) Can't wait to get started and eventually if I get good enough I may offer them for sale and plan to brand mark each of them with a silver lilly in order to relate back to my mermaid name/self and so people know they are originals :)
