no more webseries? has the mermaid hype passed finally?

I was just thinking today about how just a few years ago, mermaid webseries were really big and had a large fan base (I especially remember when some of the girls from a series were special guests at Vegas Mercon and apparently had quite a good amount of fans turn out for autographs.) But now, I barely ever see any new series, or new young mermaids/merfolk coming out of the woodwork. why do you think that is? Do you think it has to do with the actors out growing it, the viewers getting older and interests changing, lack of motivation, people having greater expectations for shows and as such not giving shows the time of day when they use bad cameras, scripting, effects, etc. Or just plain and simple that the mermaid craze has blown over? (I'm gonna be posting a blog post on this too, I just want to do more research on it first but also thought it would be a good discussion topic for the community)

I think that is a major point. Average youtube quality has risen so much the last years.

Especially with one of the current series 'mermaid miracles' using professional quality gear and effects. Not to mention some of the older series now like 'secret life of a mermaid' and '3 tails' improving their acting it's giving audiences a higher expectation.

I think another thing is people are probably getting sick of seeing the same H2o plot rehashed a million times, no one's coming up with anything original anymore.

But those are usually years old. The longest running web series I know of (Secret life of a mermaid) ended 6 months ago as one girl moved away and another went away to college (which is just so strange to think that they're the same age as me now! and I've been seeing them around for forever.)
When I used to watch swimming videos there would be at least 5 web series showing up in the suggested videos list. Now I barely see any. I mostly see professional mermaid videos (mostly melissa) and unrelated videos.

The 3 Tails is probably the second longest running I think, since it's still going and started about a year after Secret Life of a Mermaid but I never got into 3 Tails, Loved Secret Life but I just found 3 tails really confusing EVERY episode, even the most recent ones. It may be just me, but I have a very slight autism so I sometimes struggle to follow plots, but it just seemed like it didn't make sense a lot of the time for me. I think Mermaid Miracles (which currently seems to be the forerunner because of the "professional" quality equipment used and the fact that they have boys...) has the same issue a lot of the time though where they just throw in plot devices that aren't explained. Again this may just be me haha.

but yeah that sounds cool. you dont have to make it super long like secret life or 3 tails. there are abunch of shows which are only like 10 episodes long. i would like to see what you come up with

i never finished secret life. mer-sries watching was more of a phase (thought mermaiding was a phase too but its just too much fun so im still here)

Yeah, the main reason I would stop watching or be uninterested would be because of bad acting and no new, original ideas. The only one I had really gotten into was The Scales, but something bad happened to the girl's channel and somehow ALL of her videos got erased. Even her videos that were not her "The Scales" series got deleted.

i had this idea when i was younger fo instead of "jewerly = mermaid" it was that the main charater woud buy some loation from a witch and put it on her legs and then turns out the lotion is magic!

I'd like to see one where the mermaid(s) aren't pre-teen girls, but mature aged mers who have lived their whole lives on land as humans, to discover that they really are sirens. Basically, I just a different story with a different point of view.

What made me stop watching them (after like a week of them haha) were the fact that they were all cookie cutter copies of the same story lines, same characters, same powers, etc. I would really love some featuring older people, but since I'm still young myself (18) I'd like to see actors my age but not in a preteeny plot line that makes them seem like they should be in middle school.

I am going to start a mermaid series this summer. I might have to do it myself since my friend (playing my sister in it) can't get her parents to be OK with the YouTube part. I have both of our tails done,and rough script for the firest episode done. I just hope I don't burn out before summer gets here....

Hmm... I am what one might consider an "older mer" - as in, I am turning 28 this year, so I'm closer to 30 than 18, LOL! I have some simply beautiful outdoor locations to shoot at, and a halfway decent DRY camera, as well as having access to a diving pool and Morticia has an underwater video camera... :thinks: I could kind of see doing a mermaid webseries, and it definitely would not have the standard recycled "H20" plot (I mean... I'm bald. There's going to have to be some story changes just to account for that). I don't really have a developed story in my head for my mermaid tales yet, just some rough ideas and random mythology and such.

I remember back then (around age 9) the biggest concern was if a series copied h20 or not
nowadays any series will just get criticized for things such as not using an HD camera or not living in a beach setting and even sometimes for not having a silicone tail(or at least Ive seen some kids complain lately , my guess because of Maya from mermaid miracles ) or other little things that didn't matter before

I feel like YouTube mermaid shows have gone from being loved for creativity to being loved for picture and setting quality
its hard for people to also be original when theirs so many too! I even looked thru mermaid series awhile ago for the fun of it and noticed theirs a lot of shows that seem to have to same things going on . which is sad cause you can tell some kids or teens really do try to put on something fun but just doesn't appeal

@Miyu - I remember reading a story as a kid (some people on here may recognize it too) but it had a bald fairy in it. The children who found her were astonished because they had always pictured fairies to have hair and the fairy just scoffed and was incredulous because like, hair would just get in the way of flying and doing fairy stuff. Anyway that's what I thought about when you mentioned bald. Don't know if that will get any wheels turning or not, but there you go :)

It's not you. While I enjoy Mermaid Miracles, they have some HUGE plot holes and I feel that the writing has gotten worse.

On another note, I would love to write a web-series but I have no one to make it with. Also(being a young adult) all of my ideas lean towards siren-esque type things or more 'adult'(older than 16) themes so I worry about how that would be received.

i couldnt agree with you more. i think the whole "turning into a mermaid" best fit pre-teens/teens is that teenage bodies are already changing so it gets more havoic of being a mermaid because they are not use to change at all in the first place. or its not emphisised in the shows but thats my take.

idea of sirens and i really want to write a fic about it but this weekend was the weekend all my new teachers decided to asign the first project that is taking alittle longer then i thought.

For some time now I've wanted to make a webseries about mermaids and recently start really thinking about how to make it a reality. But like the op said I've wondered if the hype for mermaid shows are over and perhaps that me making my own will be destined for failure

Well the Siren tide crew have just started a new series. They've got about 100 subscribers and like 600 views on their first episode after a month and a half so I'd defs say that the trend has died down but if you're only looking to make a series for the YouTube fame then it's probably better you don't. If you wanna do it just for fun then it shouldn't matter too much how successful or unsuccessful the series is :)

Hi, I'm kind of a fanatic for mermaid webseries and they are still going strong. Nobody's really surpassed the originals in fandom, but I agree with Yulia--general show quality seems to be going up. Back in 2012 you were lucky to get a show with decent fabric tails, silicone ones were almost unheard of. Now the standard is a reasonably good camera and at least one Fin Fun tail. I blame those guys for the boom, they were the first serious competition for Magictail.
