belated, but...new Pittsburgh mermaids here, hi!

So I have been lurking for months, now...and never actually introduced myself. I'm Lesley!

My daughter Rowan discovered Fin Fun last summer, and has already worn out her first two tails! Being a crafty gal I started looking around to see how I might go about making fabric tails of my own. Then I found this place. :jawdrop:

I have made lots of clothes and costumes in the past. I used to be a bellydancer and I designed three costumes for professional use (one of which I just unpacked again last night, and found out it still fits, woohoo!). I all knit and make jewelry, and spent awhile teaching the Wilton method for decorating cakes. So, being a gal with a love of all things sparkly and all things crafty and all things swim-my, how can I resist the challenge of a full silicone tail? It hits EVERY SINGLE BUTTON I HAVE! :lol:

My daughter is 8 now, and she's already developing her mer-persona. I'll have to do a thread detailing her latest fancy fabric tail, though now that I've started experimenting with silicone she's all over the idea as well. So here's our goal: by the end of the summer, we'll both be swimming in silicone!

Not much else to tell-- in my daily life I'm a biology professor, so I am of course drawn to the more realistic scaly fishy tails. I also write a lot, and in the summer I'm crazy about gardening. My daughter loves all things fashion (being eight, she has plenty of unusual opinions about what is fashionable) and wants to design fabric tails for her friends. She's sitting here as I type this busily drawing mermaid fashions and jewelry.

This site is simply amazing and I am so glad that all the wonderfully creative menfolk here are happy to share their tail-making secrets. We can't wait!

Seeing how so many people have made amazing silicone tails on their first try, even without previous experience making molds, sculpting, etc, I would say you will do a fintastic job!
