View Full Version : Monofin Help?

Hi, I want to make a new tail for the summer because my last one is... very retired XD I bought a Triton monofin because it's a great fluke shape, really good in the water etc. The only thing I don't like is that the foot holes are too far apart which made my previous tail look really wide because my legs were miles apart (and it was a bit baggy too so ugh!)
Anyway, I was thinking of selling my Triton and getting a Finis wave and modifying it so that the fluke isn't as stiff either. However, that is on the assumption that the Finis wave makes your tail look less... wide? Any suggestions??? Thanks :D

The straps on the Finis Wave can be a little iffy. They randomly slip off while swimming, the middle part where the plastic hook is, can also come off. Worse if you're wearing your tail and you have to fix these issues, but can't take the tail off cos some little kids watching you or too lazy (me) to take the tail off to fix it.
The Finis Foil might be an idea, since you want tail that is "less wide".

I second the Foil idea.
Many other fins have the straps, which are hard to hide (especially in a fabric tail).
All bigger monofins I've seen sadly have that gap between the feet (probably to make sure people with bigger thighs and wider feet don't get squeezed) which force your legs apart quite a bit.
That's why I like to use custom-made fins in tails, but the Foil might do the job as well
(it's the one fin I didn't buy, because apparently it gives off terrible chemical stench and I'm allergic to that).

don't buy the foil! it's like the most delicate of the monofins!!! I bought one a couple of years ago and one of the foot pockets broke after a few times I used it. It is really a waste of money.

I've had a foil for over a year and never had any problems with it. And I put a lot of strain on it the first few months and it still works great. I get blisters around my toes, but wrapping them with tape takes care of that issue.
However I was given a brand new wave to test out at Merfest and the plastic piece holding the strap broke as I was putting it on, making it completely useless. :(

I don't know maybe I was unlucky but I feel that some people complain about finis monofins, other feel perfectly with it. Maybe some are more resistant than others…I never banged mine agains anything but after five uses at sea it broke…it's not that I put extra pressure in it

That makes me worry about their quality control. But they are a larger company. I'd see what kind of warranties they have no matter which you decide on. :)

Thanks for all of the replies! The foil is definitely an idea if I get a decent one XD I have heard mixed views in the past about the finis monofins and I think this confirms it! Still on the fence about the idea but I could maybe have a look into their warranties or other monofins maybe. It's just a shame that it's only really the kids' ones that have tighter/closer foot pockets. Maybe I could even research into making my own custom tail like Echidna suggested! Thanks for all the input!

There is also this. Similar to the Foil but a different maker. I don't know of anyone that has one here.
