Hello!

I'm Sabrina the Selkie, a name I rooted around in the drawers of my brain for about a minuet ago. I wanted something to go with Selkie, and well, my real name is Kate, which I didn't really think would work.

I'm a teen-aged mermaider hopeful, of the "raised on H2O: Just Add Water" garden variety, although I would say my first exposure to mermaid lore was a baby blanket. That and The Secret of Roan Inish, which is terribly acted but adorable, and very impressive to a toddler who loves the water.

I was never taught to swim, but my mother knew very well that babies instinctively know how to, so she put me in the sink at two weeks old and let me figure it out. I very quickly graduated to "level: bathtub," and was at "level: hotel hot tub" by six months old.

So, I literally can't remember not being able to swim. Water wings were a very strange concept for me, when I found out those existed, though I do remember when I figured out how to hold my head above the water for an extended period of time.

I swam in a monofin and tail for the first time last summer, one made of duct tape with a poster board inside, for the dummy. BAD IDEA. Duct tape is not that waterproof I tested it in the lovely Lake Michigan on a day with a delightfully rough surf on the Chicago end of the lake.

The paper fell apart very quickly, and the monofin lost its rigidity. I continued to swim with it for the day, however, and enjoyed it immensely.

I am now operating with another duct tape monofin, with plastic on the inside this time, which is much more rigid than the other ever was, and functions in the water wonderfully. It was also just the right price, considering that I already had all of the materials. :)

That first tail swim was utterly fantastic, what with the children exclaiming as I dragged myself through the sand, though I'm not unused to that, I get almost more exclamations when I'm out of tail and practicing my breath hold.

I'm currently waiting for the thaw of spring, which means I can return to swimming in Lake Michigan.

I would really love to get to know the wonderful mermaids and mermen on MerNetwork and otherwise, as well as get in contact with others in the Chicago area!

So, hi.

whoops. Messed up the title, sorry! Just pretend the grammar is right.

Thank you!

YES, Sia. The cold is a major bummer! But it meant I got my fun "snowmaid" photos. How I got convinced that going out in the snow in a bikini and tail was a good idea, I cannot for the life of me remember. Somehow, the idea was hatched by one of the supposedly responsible adults in my life.

Thanks. I'm really pleased with the results. I maintain, however, that it was my mother's friend's idea. XD
