So, a question for piratical mertenders. What did ship's doctors do aboard a pirate ship? Marine archaeologists are excavating Blackbeard's ship and are finding out.

Mercury injections for syphilis, blood letting for everything else :p

I'm glad it has improved a tiny bit since.

I find fascinating how people treated illnesses in the past. I love to learn things such as these. Not that they don't horrify me, mind you.

When people speculates how they would have liked to live in past eras (Tudor, Rennaissance, Victorian...), the first thing I point out to them is the medicine of the time. They always reply "I had never thought of that...".

Actually, they still use leeches when reattaching amputations, which is amazing.
