My Sequin tails thread

Hey all thought I would start up a thread for all my sequin tail projects since I have decided to go down this route rather than silicone tails because of my ankle :) I decided I wanted to be safe than sorry and this way I can be the unique one out there and eventually when I get good enough I may offer sequin tails for sale if people would be interested??

Even have an idea for a brand spot of a silver lilly for on the tail hence my mermaid name and this shows that the tail is an original of Mermaid Silverlilly and this also then allows me to achieve all my dreams of having my many different dream tail designs come to life and the processes I go through with learning to handsew everything and make it all work and come together and how it improves with time :)

I will be using 14mm sequins as well as I find them more beautiful than the large sequins and love the effect more! I also want to experiment with different ways of using the sequins and getting fringe effect looks with the sequins to and bringing realistic details of the flukes etc to life :)

I also have some plans to do with using sequins on the fins as well and working out which material is best to be used to do that :) Probably spandex I would say :)

Anyway hope you will all enjoy my progress and processes as I go along and I will share all materials etc as I get them with you :)

I am purchasing my sequins wholesale and in bulk from pandahall :) As of right now only the holographic ones :) I will be interested to see how it all goes and what I learn from it all :)

Thanks I have choosen the top one first but plan on doing the others with time :) Going to take me a long time to sew the sequins on so they look perfect and like scales with no holes showing lol :P

I am a bit of a perfectionist :) And still have no hydra fin etc yet for the first tail have to buy that sometime down the track too but I hope to make my tails to die for and since no one really sells new sequin tails I may look at doing the odd sequin tail order on etsy down the track if I get interest anyway :) that way if people want a really good quality sequin tail they can get it :)

Have to learn and know what to do first though :) I also hope to eventually be able to offer custom fluke shapes to everyone if and when it came to that but will have to work it out and see :) As it all depends :) Or may have 1 or 2 shapes they can pick from :) Will work it out once I have the chance to make it and get used to the process etc!

Personally I love crafty stuff and would love to do things like this as my full time career (Its my aim with my online stuff) But will have to see how it all goes :)

Should have the sequins in 3 or 4 days for the first design all holographic sequins the silver one for the lilly well it wont be here till after the 7th of march when it is meant to ship due to the chinese holiday :) But if I am guessing correctly this could take up to 500 hours like hannah frasiers does if I want to do it right :) (that is no holes or sequin ends showing etc!

Just an idea I had anyway lol I always have crazy creative ideas come up lol but will see how it goes as something like this you wouldn't be able to take many people lol :P But yes just an idea right now :) See how I go with designing and making things up in the meantime but I can't wait to do it have a lot of research to do like how to hand sew neoprene etc :) Going to be a lot of fun!

Need to work out what material I can use on the fins though as I plan to sew sequins on I have blue lycra material but don't know how that will work for the light colored sequins

BTW can anyone tell me if this spandex material would be suitable for fins on the neoprene tail?? It definately feels very similar to my swimmer bottoms but they feel a little softer but I can't tell properly as my hands were sticking to the material. But yes I am not sure! Plan on sequining the whole thing for something different (The fins/dorsal that is) And was just wondering if this was suitable even though the tips will be in shades of light colors like white/creamy shades?? But will work it out I am sure :) And I also plan to sequin the whole tail hence why I bought so many sequins to cover myself and the pattern I will do :)

Sorry the flash went off hence the not even tone of the material lol in real life it is totally even toned! This came straight from my fabric stash and the cut edges do not fray :)

And here is my lilly that I am going to sequin on in silver to each and every tail I do :) Will fit it in somewhere I am sure :)

Pretty much any spandex would be fine for fins. For the body of a tail you need 4-way stretch spandex, but that's not an issue for fins. Fabric will weigh down the tail, but if the body of the tail is neoprene, a little extra weight in the fins is a good thing; neoprene tends to float. I can't tell from the photo: does this fabric have glitter on it? Or is the sparkliness just part of the material? Glitter tends to shed and drop all over the place, and many pools won't let you wear glitter in the water.

I am going Neoprene as the tail base and no the material is just shimmery but doesn't contain glitter it just looked glittery when the flash went off on the camera since I took it in bad lighting which my house is known for lol :P

well Just put in an order for 2 x packs of each for tester samples for my Peacock Mantis Tail from Cartwrights will be interested to see what they look like put in for the holographic sequins in all the different blues/greens and the red holographic sequins in 12mm for that tail :) Have 14mm for my other tail.

Works out if I do that though it will be more expensive from Cartwrights than from Pandahall as the cost for 2100 sequins from them is only 2 dollars cheaper than the bulk bags from pandahall but pandahall doesn't have the shades I want for the peacock Mantis tail so I decided to get a few 200 packs to see what the colors look like.

Only problem is its probably going to mean mixing and matching 2 different looking types of shell sequins lol :P

Sure it will work out. First though I will be working on my orange tail then will look at the peacock Mantis.

And hopefully Cartwrights 12mm holographic sequins will be beautiful and what I need for the job. Honestly though I don't think I will want the shells with the holes at the bottom and top for my design though but will have to see how it goes as I wish they all came with the holes only at the bottom.

But then looking at Mermaid Keldas sample thread you can't really tell when they are all laid out together :) Which is good!

Speaking of which does anyone know where you can get black 12mm holographic glitters for the eye holes?? I can only find the plan non sparkly black.

Gah just realised I should have ordered a silver sample too lol as I will need them for my Silver Lilly birthmark lol :P Oh well can do it when I am going to do the tail in the meantime I am just getting samples to see what the main colors will look like :)

Well just recieved my shell sequins 14mm honestly I am a little disapointed in the quality a bit as the odd ones have missing parts of the color off them or its broken where they punched the 2 bottom holes but fortunately most are fine and I love the colors so I can deal with it guess I just thought I might get better quality and wasn't expecting to see missing color before they are even removed from the bag or broken ones etc. Most arnt too bad but the mixed relacement ones wernt what I was wanting at all and they arent holographic like the ones they show on there image which is a bit misleading in my honest opinion. But guess at least I can sequin my tail now.

I guess you just dont get very good quality when you pay $14.73 AUD per bag of 11000 odd sequins.

think next time I will e going with cartwrights instead depending on what colors I need and if they are 12mm ones there as I got 14mm here but the price for 2100 of cartwrights sequins is nearly the same as the price of 11800 sequins at Pandahall.


But I do love the holographic colors and fortunately from what I can see there is a very small minority of damaged ones. But as I am noticing where the shell shape has been punched it seems to be faded colors there too just hopefully no one can tell when I do my tail.

Maybe I am just being too picky lol honestly I never buy sequins I just wasn't expecting them to come like this!

Maybe I should Mermaid Shelly! Honestly I love the colors and most are okay its just getting some shoddy ones in it that I guess makes it kinda disappointing and makes me wonder how long they are going to last color wise on my tail.

I don't want to send them back as it will cost more to me to send them back than I paid to get it sent to me. Plus Cartwrights doesn't have these colors in there store unfortunately or at least some of the colors they didn't seem to have. But I don't know if I will go with pandahall again as honestly the quality doesn't seem the most brilliant they could be lol particularly if they are sending all materials (including hole punches and broken shell sequins etc too) Honestly that is the price you pay for cheap 500 gram bags of shell sequins. Next time I will go cartwrights which is 2100 sequins for nearly the same price. I have some coming from there for my mantis tail samples to check out what the colors are like since they didn't have those colors on pandahall.

I may even do a comparison on quality between the 2 companies holographic sequin shells. Will be interesting to see the difference.
All I know is that even though you get bulk bags honestly I don't think I could recommend pandahall after the items I have seen maybe I am being too picky but I am really disappointed as I hate cheap shoddy crap I like to get good quality items/materials not cheap crap.

I also realised I can't post a review as honestly then they will be asking me about returning the item and then refunding me etc :( I don't know what to do but I just checked there after sales booklet apparently if I take photos of the quality problems which I have done then you can possibly get a refund if they agree with it etc will have to go and document it all and it doesn't mention about me having to return the items. I just have to contact them within 30 days but I can't send it back as it will cost me too much being in Australia.

Will post pics of the sequins later when I have things sorted. right now I am just very dissapointed with the quality of the product!

Over all this is a very poor product you sent me.

I live in Australia I can't afford to pay postage to send items back as it is so much more expensive and I am on a very limited budget and out of work right now. Here is proof of the items you sent me and what poor quality they are!

Who would send such poor quality items out to customers?? I also noticed some of the sequins are broken where they have punched the holes hence making them very difficult to sew. I bought these for a Mermaid tail I plan on doing really I am wondering if I am going to be able to fully cover my tail with the quality of these items. They are so shoddy and I am mighty disappointed and I really cannot afford on my income to send them back. But I also notice on your defective timeline you don't mention sending them back.

Just wanted to say after the disapointment of yesterday (still hoping I will get my money back but doubt it since I can't afford to send the items back lol) I had a suggestion from minnow to use a spray varnish over the sequins to give it an extra protective layer and keep the color on the sequins :) I really think it could work and am so excited as I really do adore my holographic sequins colors :)

Will do testers later and post the results but I am happy about the idea will also post color samples on here too :) So yay it may all work out for the best it has really cheered me up!

and I will do spray water based varnish tests later in the day to see how it goes with keeping the color on after spraying it and to test if the varnish will melt the plastic like resin would etc. So then I can know for sure it is going to work :) can't wait. And it means I may have a way of making the color last longer on my mermaid tail which it wouldn't last right now with the way the color is just coming off!

Thanks Elle I was mighty disappointed too but if my trials work I may have a way of making the color last longer all I can say is don't by from Pandahall it is cheap crap lol next time I will suck it up and pay the extra cost of buying much less sequins but hopefully better quality from Cartwrights!

And I can't afford to send them back as you know returning an item from Australia costs double the cost of what you pay for them to send it here lol so hopefully some sort of agreement can be made but I doubt I will hear back from them till after the Chinese New Year!

I've bought sequins from Pandahall too. The color didn't last either. They were a bright purple non holographic sequins. Chlorine ate the color off in two swims. I read that Cartwright sequins are a much better quality. The colors are made with pre colored sheets. Eg they are not color coated, the color is made into the sheets.

Thats honestly what I thought might happen! Was going to test varnish and see how they lasted with it but will definately go cartwrights in the future

If i can get money back have had a note they owe me a refund for over 5 days now!

I am not going to be able to use them if what Mermaid Enora said above is right too I am not going to be able to use my sample sequins there either cause the holographic ones just loose there color! Which I don't want! So basically I spent a fortune on sequins that I can't use and have no idea what to do with them lol :( Still quite disapointed as this means the cartwrights holographic sequins are going to be useless too I wanted a really sparkly tail but I am not going to be able to have it cause all the color comes off the holographic sequins even for cartwrights according to Mermaid Enora!

I also don't want to sell them on cause of how crappy they are and just honestly don't know what to do with them all now I wasted money on them and now have no use for them and I am in a tough spot financially cause of them too! Grrrrrrrr Just never ever buy sequins from Pandahall

Put in a complaint against them as they still haven't refunded me the money they were supposed too plus they also sent me crummy products! I may have to return them but I have taken pics of what I have seen of the paint peeling/broken shells/flat and not properly punched sequins etc.

So hopefully I can get my money back but will have to wait and see! Just hope it won't cost me too much if I have to return the items as its a 5.1kg box of sequins! As I don't know if they pay return postage for the return of shoddy items! Hopefully they do and it won't have to come out of my pocket as then I am still loosing out anyway! Just glad I paid via paypal as otherwise I couldn't have disputed things!

Pandahall is not a reliable source of shopping. Everything is made in China and there is no standards of quality. Tis all cheap and nasty stuff that don't last long. And their customer service is non existent.

Hence why I have no refund yet (have posted a paypal claim on that too) And why I have not heard from them about my complaint about there items! I have also lodged a claim there too and have taken pics of the items they sent me like the ones I could find loosing color and have documentation of them saying they owe me a refund that I haven't gotten! here's the promised pic of the hologram scales.
the scale sewed on has faded and lost most of the hologram appearance after two swims.
The scale just sitting on top it was it looked like before it got wet. As you can see the non hologram scales are still just fine.

I did use a few in my tail but only about twenty made it in total. And I knew what was going to happen to them.
btw, I bought some peachy colored scales (same shape and size as the purple hologram scales I have)
I was going to use them to blend skin tones with mermaid scales but decided not to. I have about 200 left.
They're $1.35 on cartwrights. I don't know if its worth it to you to ship them halfway across the world for such a little amount?
It might be easier to just buy in bulk? idk.
I'll post a pic of them here later if you or anyone else is interested.

So Mermaid Silverlilly, you're saying that there is a chance you can get your money back? And I see the hologram shininess has left her tail but the color is still there, right? Could you work with the non holographic ones and have "single color" scales? Sorry it sounds like I haven't been reading your updates and Mermaid Enora's messages; I just finished an entire 15 paragraph research paper yesterday evening and all this morning and I feel completely out of it today hahaha :headdesk:I don't even remember what I said "That's awesome!" to. Must've been your pictures of the sequins because they are really pretty. lol

Yeah hopefully I have put a claim in with paypal! If they don't get back to paypal in 10 days (this is there chinese holiday period till the day it ends guessing it is 10 australian days!) Then I straight get my money back no questions asked! If they respond I have to provide evidence and proof as to why I should get my money back! I have all the pics just have to highlight bits and pieces and explain what happened when I was holding one and the color came off all the sticking up edges etc! And yes I plan on when the time comes purchasing single color scales now from cartwrights and doing my mantis tail :)

I have also sealed the sequin bags up in case I have to return them but I am hoping I don't have to pay postage as it will cost me double to return the parcel to them compared to the 60 dollars I payed to have them ship it to me!

I also have evidence of them saying they need to refund me $13.86 but that they never did and they had plenty of time to do it before there chinese holidays! So I am not impressed there either! Most people it takes 2 days at most to process a refund was 5 days later they left for holidays still no refund! Very Dodgy company if you ask me and all my friends are glad I made a paypal claim against them! OH and with the refund the only notice that they owed me a refund that I got was on there site they never emailed me notice I am owed a refund (Couldn't get in all the items I wanted so had to change for worse items) Guess that is so hopefully the person would forget they have to get a refund and they get to keep the persons money!

Really dodgy in my opinion if they don't give your money back that is rightfully yours straight away when they say they owe you a refund!

Yeah customer service wasn't working from the 17th to at least the 28th! I was owed a refund 5 days before they went away maybe more! I got sick of waiting and it was dodgy how unlike other companies they never sent me an email saying they had to refund me! I also had a service ticket placed maybe 2 days after asking for my refund and no contact I also hope they cancel the other order I had with them that I submitted a ticket for or else I won't be impressed and will have to go through paypal again told them the reason I wanted it refunded is cause of the shoddy quality items they have etc etc.

So yeah hopefully its looking up now and all works out! At least if they don't cancel the other order like I asked them too (which they don't have mentioned you don't get your money back) I went through paypal for that one too so I can complain again! But honestly I hope they don't respond so its just easy and I get my money back!

Ahh and its customer service is closed till the 23rd not the 28th that is the factories so hopefully either way I will get my money back and I expect them to pay for the postage back since its there very shoddy products! Just to let people know never buy through pandahall! Very difficult customer service that lies and puts things back on you and is very rude. In the end on the last day they settled with the dispute amount I first claimed of $13.86 and they have to make it look better put my canceled order refund with it! So in other words I am left with a ton of shoddy items they get to keep my money and I get nothing in return but a box of unuseable sequins that I can't do anything with and I wouldn't even feel comfortable about selling!

Please never buy from them you will get dudded and not get anything back from it either and if you check out online there are a lot of bad reviews about them and they are even on some scam watch sites! Please beware! And don't buy from them your items won't last!

got the case reopened hopefully I may still get my money back! Nope within 5 minutes paypal ruled in teh sellers favor so I am left with shoddy items that I can't use and they get to keep my money the scam artists that they are! So I am now out of pocket instead!

Honestly I don't think I ever want to try buying sequins again after this bad experience! I just don't want to take the risk would rather save the money towards something instead! So I am sorry but there will be no sequin tail from me!

right now my plan is to stick with fabric tails and later will see what I go :) But you guys are right at least I was able to warn you all! And thanks for the advice with Cartwrights but will see down the track right now though I really don't want to risk it as I lost $186.43 on sequins not really impressed and kinda turned me off online buying a bit other than from places I have bought from that I know I can trust like a couple of bookstores etc! :)

I had a bunch of cartwright's sequins....before they went missing in august...but they're great. I got maybe...three damaged ones in my order of around seven thousand. (I wanted enough to sequin my whole tail, but never finished because stuff came up and then the sequins went missing).
The ones I have sewn onto my tail haven't come off yet, and I kill that thing...and I put some on my bathing suit top. Unfortunately, I'm stuck handsewing my sequins because I don't have a sewing machine...I need to get more sequins.
