Okay so I love H2O just add water and mako mermaids as much as the next person. I think the tails are amazing and would love to make one but it seems like the tails with an extension wouldn't work for long time swimming or be safe in open water so what if you made the tail without the extension? Is it neoprene with a silicone layer and the plastic scales?

Yes basically those are the materials used to make that kind of tails 😉
Wish you good luck 😉

I hope I can be some assistance... I have been attempting to make a tail of this design and with the extensions for 3 years now, ive tried alot of things and its been pretty much 3 years down the drain. The positive to it though is iv'e learnt so much along the way, but the down side is i never knew enough on the creation of the tails in order to replicate it... but this doesn't mean im giving up. I will try again but for now im attempting a standard tail like most others on here. to answer your question. yes it can be done without the extension. some things i would like to ask you to consider.

have you swam in Neoprene Before? it will make you float as it does have floating properties. but sticking to 2 to 3mm may help. some float more than others and in salt water floating does occur more than in freshwater. so testing will be in order to ensure you don't float like foam...

plastic scales.. used on the original not so practical with these tails as its hard to find a glue that will adhere plastic to silicone. actually i was unsuccessful in the matter so i ended up casting individual silicone scales, which will stick to silicone. if you do find a way to adhere plastic scales you may find it hard to get the tail on without the use of a zipper.

check out my thread on here. you will find it in my profile, you may find some stuff useful and PM me anytime if i can be more of assistance. I would prefer you to succeed in this endeavor.

Thanks so much! I'm still in the very early stages of design but when I start getting into materials I would appreciate the help

I made a few extent details and I had no trouble swimming distances in mine.
