conflicting info from smooth-on

Ok mers,

Maybe you lovelies can help. I've been doing so much research, talking to different companies, getting info from you all as well for making a silicone tail...

I really don't like working with shell shock, for one it's too expensive and 2, it starts to set way too fast, goes from liquid to laffy taffy consistency really quickly. I read about using urethane rubbers for the mold instead of using shell shock which is a urethane plastic. It's more flexible and easier to work with vs shell shock which is more rigid and hard.

No one really put the brands of things they use in their threads. I've asked specifically and I'll just get answers like polyurethane, or I used a urethane rubber, or contact this place they will give you loads of help. But no specific answer as to brand name of product they use, which doesn't really bother me too much, I can do my own research if need be to find the right materials or go by pictures and look and compare what things look like to other sites and such, if that makes sense.

So I reached out to smooth on to look for a good urethane rubber to make for my molds. I'm still waiting on Reynolds advanced materials to email me back. They are the closest dragonskin distributor that I found according to the smooth on site. Someone also told me to call up BITY , I've been watching their videos and am excited for them to get back to me, but why in the world would smooth on disagree with this. The guy I have been speaking to, that is sending me cured samples of the silicone so I can decide which is better for my needs and future silicone making things, he told me that platinum silicone won't cure in a urethane rubber mold. The urethane I seen from BITY's website says it's perfect for silicone castings. And like I said I'm still waiting for Reynolds to get back to me. But I don't really understand why smooth on is telling me otherwise.

To all the Mers who have used urethane as your mold, how has it held up with your silicone? Did it cure? Any inhibition? Why would smooth on tell me it doesn't work when there is proof that it does? Am I misinformed?

Don't use a urethane rubber mold. Use a urethane plastic mold. http://www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Plastic-a/c5/index.html It sets up rigid, but the silicone pulls right out of it.

Smooth Cast 325 is my favorite because it's pretty clear.

I though that was with regular rubber, not urethane rubber. Isn't regular rubber latex based and urethane rubber synthetic? I'm so confused lol the threads ive read said urethane rubber, it's solid and flexible, looks kind of like caramel, but hard enough to get excellent detail

Why do you want to go rubber on rubber? My urethane plastic molds are so detailed, you can see my errant thumbprints in them!

I've had trouble pulling dragonskin from rubber molds, and I had to use a ton of release! Plastic molds are durable and need no release!

I just read that it was easier to handle, the mold is flexible so it's easier to pull and I got excited.

Your molds look amazing and I've stalked all your photos on the tail making threads since I joined. Lol I'm open to anything really... well except shell shock. Lol that was my only reason for looking elsewhere for other options.

Does the smooth cast have a longer working time then shell shock? I'm nervous because of my previous failed attempts with using shell shock for other molds. Is it more liquidy. It's way cheaper then the rubbers I was looking at too.
