Question about new colour-changing material

Some scientists in Japan have invented a rubber that has an irridescent appearance. They do it by embedding particles that create a Bragg diffraction pattern, much like butterflies do on their wings in nature. Here is what it looks like in its unstretched state:

When you stretch or bend it, though, changes in the particle spacing result in changing irridescent colours from red through orange - yellow - green. Here is a photo of the same piece of rubber stretched out just by hand:

So I had some questions for the Mer community.


Do you think a tail made out of this rubber would be cool?
Would you only be interesting in the irridescence? (For example- a tail or top that had an irridescent finish, or perhaps irridescent scales applied, but wouldn't change colour?)
Would you be interested in both irridescence and colour changing?
How much increased cost would you be willing to handle? Examples:
If it were in the form of latex sheets, would you pay $45/square metre? $100/square metre?
If it were to send the cost of a molded silicone tail from $3,000 to $4,000 would that be doable?
If it were in the form of latex sheets, would 3D scales molded onto one side of the latex be good or not-so-good?


Note, not making any promises, just looking into whether this would be a feasible substance to experiment with at the moment.

That is amazing!

That is some seriously beautiful material. Looks like it would need more development for further textures and fabric applications as a stand alone with strength. A molded tail or molded individual dragon scales from this material attached to a base, would be amazing. $4000+ wouldn't be suprising for something so advanced and unusual. My tech artist geek brain is loving the possibilities of this stuff.

I am sure something like this would be costly so I probably wouldn't be able to have it, but I love it! I would definitely love to see a tail make with this.

That is gorgeous material! Reminds me of the shine on fish in the shallows waters when they move about on a sunny day.

The only concern I can think of (apart from 'how durable is it when exposed to chlorine/seawater') is that since the colors are a response to stress, they may not change as evenly as you'd want. Tails have major stress points at ankles and knees, and if those areas are constantly stretched more than the rest you could end up with a mostly green tail with two red bands around it.
Definitely worth experimenting with though!
