So as some of you may know from my facebook page, yesterday was my 22nd birthday. One of my presents was a shubunkin goldfish that I named Buddha. Now I've never really owned a fish before, aside from the betta my brother owned when we were kids (which I promptly overfed and killed.) But I was super excited to have this fish, because they're supposed to be really hardy, which makes them great starter fish.
Anyways, we had a 10 gallon tank in our apartment that was sitting on our desk for quite some time. We were originally gonna put a snake in there, and then it was going to be a bearded dragon or something. Our friend breeds reptiles, but we could just never settle on which animal we wanted so the tank sat unused. I cleaned it out yesterday with a wet rag, put some gravel and seashells in, bought a really pretty water filter, and put some water conditioner/stress coat in the water. I did my best to make sure the water in the tank was the same temp as the water in the bag that the fish was in. I put the bag in the tank so the water could slowly adjust to where it needed to be, and then after an hour or so, I set the little fish free.

He swam around quite happily for a while. I put a few variety pellets in for food, and he ate them all up. But then I started to notice that he was sinking to the bottom when he wasn't actively swimming. I put in a lucky bamboo plant that I had. It was in a tall vase with gravel much the same as the gravel in the tank already. He would swim to the top of the vase and rest on top of it near the surface. Then I noticed he was also taking big gulps of air, he would swim really hard to the surface and almost jump out of the water. Then he would try to swim back down and would burp out a big bubble and go back to sinking when not swimming.

Uh oh. Swim bladder issue? I read online that many fish can live with overinflated bladders because at least they can get to the surface to eat and get air. This poor guy had an underinflated bladder which explains the sinking and gulping air. He wasn't getting enough oxygen even though there were air bubbles all over the tank and the filter is a sort of fountain which aerates the water as well. I figured there was nothing I could do. I could fast him for 3 days to let him pass any food that could be blocking him up and squeezing his swim bladder, so that was my plan.

Unfortunately, Buddha passed away last night and we gave him a proper viking burial this morning. I've since replaced all the water in the tank, cleaned the filter, rinsed the gravel, added new clean gravel, (the stuff we had was from some fish we owned years and years ago, so long ago I can't remember us ever having one.) and bought new water conditioner. Buddha was purchased from walmart (ssh, I know.) because Petco didn't have any shubunkins in stock. They do have a policy that says they'll replace a fish that passes away within a week or so, but the SO and I haven't gone up yet because it's snowing and yesterday the associates took about an hour to get someone to the fish department, and assistance was called about 5 times by 5 different associates. Petco told us they get new shipments of fish on friday, but when we went today we were told that there were no shubunkins on order this week, but the associate added it to his next week's order so I could come get some.

While I was up there, I picked up some 5 in 1 aquarium test strips that read Ph, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate and general water hardness. Results are as shown:
Hardness: 0ppm (mg/L)
Carbonate hardness: 0ppm (mg/L)
pH: Fresh (7.5)
NO2: 0ppm (mg/l)
NO3: 0pplm (mg/L)

Now this is where the results get confusing. According to the chart, the ideal hardness for fresh water fish is anywhere between 30-120ppm. Do I need to harden the water somehow? Also, shubunkins are not only freshwater fish, but also fall into the chart's category of goldfish, who's ideal hardness is 120-180ppm. Which category should I go by?

All of the stats are low, carbonate hardness is at 0 but needs to be at 80-120 for freshwater and 120-240 for goldfish.
pH should be fine, freshwater is 7.0 and goldfish is7.5, and NO2 and NO3 are normal. This was just water from the tap as well. I really wanna do this right, I don't want another poor little shubunkin to pass away on me because his water wasn't good. Any pointers would be much appreciated. :)

Did you let the tank sit with filter running for at least 3 days before you got the fish? Also goldfish should be in nothing smaller than a 20 gallon. What kind of water did you fill the tank with? (You said it was tap?) Hardness being 0 is a bit concerning as they need the minerals for their gills to function properly. Hardness is rarely ever that low. Usually people have issues with the water being too hard. You can try corals and a pinch of aquarium salt to help. And if I remember correctly, Hardness helps buffer the pH of the water. Without it the pH can jump erratically. A change in one of these doesn't generally harm the fish, as long as its a slow change.

A snake or bearded dragon would hardly have lasted a month in a ten gallon before needing a bigger tank.

I worked at a petstore for awhile and did a ton of research on every animal we carried. Even owned a few so I knew I was doing the best for them and telling future owners the correct info.

Tbh, I never found goldfish to be very hardy fish. They produce a lot if ammonia and make it very difficult to keep a smaller tank clean. Bettas have always been the best fish in my experience. Depending on your water, tetras, guppies or mollies may work better. I never had luck with mollies, but my tetras lived forever.

We always made sure to let tap water sit in an open container for a few days to air out when I had fish (goldfish, moors, guppies) and frogs (super tempermental african clawed frogs. Very sensitive.)

I had my frogs in a 20 gallon long tank and my fish in a 10 gallon.

I'm always so surprised to hear that fish need such big tanks. Buddha was only about 2 inches long, and he seemed to have plenty of space to move around in. The tank is 20" long by 10" wide by 12" deep. I'll see if I can attach some pictures. I did fill it with normal tap water. I have a 2 quart pyrex bowl and it took me like 20 trips back and forth to fill the thing. I don't know if my sources have been very good throughout the years. My science teacher had some shubuken in a 20 gallon tank. There were probably 4 or 5 of them, and they were surprisingly hardy. I remember us going on school break for like a month and we were all worried that they'd starve with no one to feed them. He told us that if you stop feeding them, they don't necessarily starve, but they will stop growing until you resume feeding them. This tank that I have is the same size tank that our friend uses with most of his beardeds and snakes. He's got one named Reggie who's pretty big but seems to be happy, I think maybe its because he gets taken out often to get exercise. The filter I bought is an Aqua-Tech power filter for 5-15 gallon tanks. It doesn't seem like it would be the type to remove bacteria, only particles and debris. I think its the same filter we had for the fish in our science class. The tank could get surprisingly dirty and its like the fish wouldn't notice at all. Maybe I'm just unlucky. :P The filter I have has been running non stop now for about a day and a half. Thats about the same time as the water has been in the tank. The water conditioner I put in says it allows the instant addition of fish, and that's what the clerk at petco told me about it as well. I think ammonia is the only thing I haven't tested for, but can there really be a harmful amount if I literally filled it with fresh tap water yesterday and the fish was only in overnight? Here's some pics of the aquarium:
275652756627567

I think the second picture is the best one that shows its size. I'll start looking on CL for a 20 gallon tank though, to see if I can get one for the next fish. :)

He could be in shock from a sudden change in temperature! Did you acclimate him before you put him in? Also, get rid of that 'lucky bamboo', they can be toxic to some fish, especially if it's really diffenbachia!

"I think ammonia is the only thing I haven't tested for, but can there really be a harmful amount if I literally filled it with fresh tap water yesterday and the fish was only in overnight?"

YES! Tap water is surprisingly full of chemicals that don't bother people but can be lethal to fish! Where's Galene? She knows all this stuff!

Especially a fish like that. They grow and need something much larger than a 10 gallon! Goldfish produce a lot of waste and that's why a 10 isn't good for them. A well fed fish can usually go two weeks without feeding before it becomes an issue.

Definitely let your tank cycle. There are beneficial bacteria that a tank needs to establish to deal with ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. It definitely seems like a Hardness issue if your test strip read zero. That can cause all sorts of bad things...

How long do they even survive in said tanks? Not long. They can live 10 years + under proper care. The "they grow to their tank size" myth is true, only because they do not have the right amount of oxygen and nutrients to grow any larger. In a way it is slow suffocation. :(

its a buissness trick. explaining to customers how compilcated and expensive taking care of on fish that takes up alot of space turns customers off

they get more money selling abunch of small cheap tanks nd telling you that "fish dont last long" when actually they last pretty long. once the fish dies customers come back to buy more. and because goldfish reproduce like crazy there is alot of supply. its cruel really

sorry for the lost for your fish but the tank size is perfect for a betta! you still need to do all the work though!

Do you have a heater for the tank? If the temperature dropped over night, that is what could've caused some of the problems. Also having no water hardness is a bit weird. Also some plants in there can give your fish somewhere to hide, which stops them from getting stressed

I know, I've been learning so much from this whole ordeal, even though it was only a one night thing! I'm letting the tank cycle right now. I did find a 20 gallon tank on Craigslist that I've been trying to get ahold of the owner to buy it from him. I had no idea fish needed so much space! I'll probably get a betta instead of another Shubunken just for now, and I'll do some more research into ammonia testers and maybe some sort of something I can put in the water to help it cycle. And I didn't know lucky bamboo could harm fish! I was at Petco and saw they had bulbs that grow into water lilies and some other varieties so I guess i assumed water loving plant + water loving animal = a match made in heaven.

On that note, does anyone wanna trade a 10 gallon tank for a 20 gallon tank? Lol.

Also, sea shells can degrade over time and throw off the PH of your water. If you want to try to use them, maybe get fake ones, or Let them sit in a bucket of water for a month and test Ph over that period to see how it changes. Goldfish tank water should be about 74 degrees Fahrenheit(or 23C), so you'll need a thermometer to test the temp. They sell ones for fish tanks at petsmart for a few dollars a piece. Also, The tank needs to sit with the water and filter running for about a week, longer if possible, so it can build up beneficial bacteria for the fish. A goldfish will grow HUGE if you let them, so with your current tank something like a beta, molly, or a guppy would be good. Beta's need heaters though too, so be sure whichever fish you get you be sure to check and see what temp it likes, if their communal, and how big they get and how long they live. The pet store isn't necessarily the pest place for these answers though, lol. Oh, and some goldfish end up eating gravel when looking for food and getting it stuck in their mouths. Just a heads up :) You could use sand but that's a whole other ballgame. Any questions feel free to ask! :cthulhu:

Live plants in a ten gallon with some small communal fish can be wonderful, but it takes so much more research! XD Many of the plants that petstores sell as aquatic aren't actually aquatic and will die and pollute your water if fully submerged. Some grow too big or fast and some are toxic. Some need a ton of light some need little.

But I love them. Makes tank upkeep so much simpler as it keeps the water quality good for the fish if the plants are happy. Sorry, kinds off topic. Lol.

Okay, so I just got back from the store. I've removed the seashells and the lucky bamboo. I purchased a small water heater for 2-15 gallon aquariums, and some ammonia clear tablets. It says one tablet per 10 gallons so I plopped one in. Any other suggestions? :)

Pearlie mentioned earlier that my lucky bamboo can be toxic to some fish, which bums me out because I loved how the bamboo looked in the tank. Is there any sort of bamboo plant that IS safe for the fish? I'll only ever be getting Shubunkins and kois, and maybe the roommate will get a freshwater crayfish or crab. I did see lillypad bulbs at the store that I thought were pretty neat.

Crabs and fish together: Not a good mix. Crayfish and crabs will usually attempt to eat the fish. Most petstore crabs are semi- aquatic and not meant to sat fully submerged. Any type of bamboo needs to have its leaves and most of its stalk out of the water or it will die and mess up your water. Sometimes will grow mold. I agree with the fake bamboo. Goldfish also tend to eat any plant you try to put in there.

I looked over this site and most of the information is really good.
http://www.firsttankguide.net/steps.php
It says one goldfish can do well in a 10 gallon, but only for a short while and it will take lots of maintenance.

From another site:
"Shubunkins are an extremely hardy variety of fancy goldfish and can survive in any conditions that the common goldfish is able to tolerate. They are extremely fast and agile swimmers and make excellent pond fish." POND fish. They grow up to a foot long and require more space. One shubunkin can live happily in a 20 gallon. Two would need a 30 gallon, four a 40 gallon and so on.

Live plants require just as much maintenance and extra steps as fish. If the lighting, CO2 and nutrient levels are not high enough then the plant will die and pollute the aquarium, potentially killing your fish. If the lighting, CO2 and nutrient levels are too high, it can cause your aquarium to be overrun with algae. If the algae spikes too quickly and uses up the available nutrients, the algae can then die and again, pollute your aquarium.

I am not aware of any bamboo suitable ,but I'm no plant expert. Koi fish get huge too though, so if you get one of those you'd eventually need at least a 55 gallon tank( just to start, they're fish meant for a pond). Crayfish and crabs can be very mean to a goldfish, so if you do get one just watch it and be prepared to have a separate tank for it. But most crabs aren't meant to be underwater all the time, and they will try to eat each other. So it's better just to not.

You could get a fake bamboo plant and put it in, but I would suggest painting it with aquarium grade silicone so that it doesn't leach any tannins into the water. Unless it is already made for your aquarium, obviously. lol. Really, when you decorate a tank it's safest to use things that were made to go in fish tanks, or else you're going to be spending a lot of time figuring out if they're safe, or how to make them safe. Any plant you get, just do proper research into how big it gets, what temp it needs, what light requirements, and most important of all, if it is safe with your fish. Hope I'm helping a little!

You've gotten some good advice here so far. I'd like to emphasize the fact that even a single goldfish needs 20-30 gallons MINIMUM to be happy and healthy. Goldfish will reach 12" long and can live for 20 years. I would also like to point out that the adult size of a fish is determined by its GENETICS, not its tank size. If you keep a fish in a tank that is too small for it, it will become stunted. Hormones will build up in the water and restrict its growth, causing organ impaction and all sorts of health problems, and will drastically shorten its life span. It will be a short miserable life for the fish. Never try to keep a fish in a tank that is too small for it!

Also, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to CYCLE your tank before adding any fishes! I'm not trying to sound like I'm yelling or anything, but I can't over-emphasize the importance of this concept. Filling an aquarium with water and letting the filter run for a few days will NOT cycle an aquarium. Cycling refers to allowing colonies of nitrifying bacteria to grow in the tank; these bacteria are what process the ammonia that the fishes excrete. Ammonia from fish waste will build up very quickly in an aquarium and because it is very toxic, it will severely stress and usually kill fishes very quickly. If you test the water in an empty tank that you've just filled with water, of course you wont see any ammonia (or nitrite or nitrate) because you haven't added an ammonia source yet. As soon as you add a fish, its waste will be an ammonia source that will pollute an uncycled tank. It will take about 4 weeks for the nitrifying bacteria to fully colonize the tank and make it safe for fishes. You have to add a source of ammonia to "feed" the bacteria while they're growing. They won't just grow on their own. So no matter how long you let the tank water sit, if you don't properly cycle it, it will not be safe for fishes and you will be severely harming any fishes that you add to the tank. That's just a very brief overview of the nitrogen cycle, so here's an article that explains it in more depth: http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_ciclo.php Also, here is an article that explains how to do a fishless cycle on your aquarium (adding an ammonia source that's not a live fish): http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_fishless.php (also note: this article explains the principle using pure ammonia, but you can also do it even more easily by adding a single cocktail shrimp from the grocery store, which will slowly decay in the tank and provide the necessary ammonia to feed the nitrifying bacteria).

Let me know if any of that doesn't make sense. I can explain it all in a lot more detail. There is a lot to understand in terms of water parameters and water quality, and you really do need to understand at least the basics, especially the nitrogen cycle, if you want to keep happy and healthy fishes. However, once you have your tank cycled, it will all be a lot simpler! Please please please do your research before buying any more fishes, though. Read, join an aquarium forum, ask lots of questions. I am always happy to help out with aquarium questions...it's already my job anyway :) (credentials: master's degree in zoology/marine biology, years and years of experience keeping aquariums and working in public aquariums and zoos).

Goldfish need a butt load of space because they make a lot of poop, because they have a huge bio load on he tank. Water hardiness is rarely a factor for a lot of fresh water animals (typically only super sensitive ones...so fish with small scales or scaless fish, like kuhli loaches). Ammonia, nitrite, and ntirate can be toxic when built up in large amounts, so add some prime when these 3 elements spike in your tank. Prime is a little bit more expensive and meant to treat larger tanks, but it's GREAT (and can last a long time in smaller tanks). The aquarium community is DEEPLY divided on "chemicals vs no chemicals" when it comes to fish owning. My advice would be to read up the different products people suggest, read the reviews, read the warning labels, and make a judgement call for yourself.

this is an example of how potentially large goldfish can get:
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q177/robsickle/biggoldfish.jpg

With that in mind, the general consensus from my understanding is that goldfish need at least 20 gallons....potentially more, depending on the sub-species of gold fish and how big it is (going to get as well). Again, they need so much space because they make a lot of poop, so minimum feeding is good with them (once every 1-4 days). They also prefer colder temperatures, so DON'T put them in a tank with tropical tank animals (bettas, guppies, tetras, etc). Bamboo is only good if it's partially submerged, otherwise, it's going to die.

Cycling a tank can be done without fish (or with fish). If you do it with fish, just make sure they're hardy (african dwarf frogs, betta fish, and african clawed frogs are good fish to cycle a tank with, all very hardy animals). Tanks take on average 4-8 weeks to cycle, and some things can be done to help quicken a cycle (quickstart, start zyme, using filter from an old/running filter, etc), but there's no such thing as an "instant" cycle, so please don't be fooled by people who claim this.

bettafish.com is a GREAT resource for all things fish related. It's specific to betta fish, but it's also good for other aquarium animals (mostly fresh water) :)

I've been owning fresh water fish for 3 years, so if anyone needs help, shoot me a message and I'd be happy to try to help :)

You guys are gonna have a good laugh here. I found a 50 gallon tank on CL and I messaged the seller via email. Then a few days later I noticed it said "text or call." so I texted. bummer for me, the girl sold it the day before I sent the text. But her friend had a 75 gallon tank that I could have for free if I came and got it. So I did.

Turns out it was a lobster tank from a grocery store. The thing is 47"Lx25"Wx18"D and it weighs A TON. 1/2" plexiglass on all sides. We literally needed 4 full grown men to haul it up the stairs to my apartment. The cool thing is though, it's got a drain in the corner of it, with a pipe that has a valve on the end. If I ever need to do a water change I just put a bucket under it and open the valve. It should drain most of the dirt and debris and grimy water from the bottom of the tank, and then I can put fresh water in. and the area where the valve is, is completely open under the tank, so I can fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and put it under the tank for a few days to let it dechlorinate, and just pull it out and pour it in when I change the water.

It's on wheels though, so before I fill it up I'm going to take them off and have it sitting flat on it's base. It weighs probably...300+ (yes) pounds and having 650 pounds of water along with that is probably bad for the floor when you've only got 4 points of contact. Having it crash through the floor would be a great way to meet my crazy downstairs neighbors, but...they're crazy and I don't want to meet them. :P

Did I do good? :) (Here's a picture) (https://www.facebook.com/mermaidayla/posts/806972269368301)

Yeah, the number of times I've heard people say "It's okay, they only grow to be like a few inches, and don't live long" is driving me insane. The first thing I learned on this adventure was that fish are like bonsai trees. They only grow as big as the amount of room you give them to grow.

Also, just a note: "they grow as big as their tank." isn't true. Goldfish, plecos and so on get stunted and stop growing due to poor water quality.
