View Full Version : Turning an oatmeal can into a mermaid "fish" food container!

Last summer at the Pod of Texas meet-up at Krause Springs I learned that Oops! All Berries Cap'n Crunch cereal is the mermaid equavilant of fish food pellets. When one of us took off their tail to go ashore we all started begging her to grab us food (we had been in the water for hours!), so she gave us handfuls of cereal. It was like the mermaid-sized version of when a kid is feeding the koi in a pond, only instead of jumping out of the water in a feeding frenxy we were nearly beaching ourselves to reach the food.
This gave me the idea to make a fake "fish" food food container and fill it with cereal to bring to mermaid events as a snack. Or maybe even charge a quarter to fill up a dixie cup so kids can feed the mermaids, like at the zoo! The Oops! All Berries cereal is perfect because it's in pellet form and very colorful (and floats!), although Cocao Puffs would look more like actual fish pellets. And Frosted Flakes would make good fish flakes... Might have to make more than one label. :thinks:
Using an empty oatmeal can as the base, I made a fake label on my computer. Here's the mock up:
27641
I'm still adjusting the design, but once it's done I'll post the final version here so other people can use it if they want. Anyone have any suggestions, like should I add a barcode? Should I change the fake label from RAINBOWfish to something more mermaid-y? I'm open to puns.

that's such a fun idea!
Maybe add a mermaid tail or mermaid silhouette?

I love this idea! This could have so many uses! And I really wish this came in handy during my pod swims and my ren fest experience when we got to explain to the kiddies why the mermaids were eating fish and chips.
As for fake company names for your mermaid pellets, it could be something like "Half-fish" Mermaid Pellets , "Luv My Mer", "Poseidon", I'm blanking on more ideas.
Definitely get a picture of a mer on your label. (I vote Arion.)

Got a great big giggle out of this! Mermaid food pellets, lol.
But seriously, great idea. :thumbs-up:

I love this idea, it's so cute! I had a thought, what about gummy worms? According to aquamarine, mermaids love gummy worms :D :mermaid kiss:

This is so awesome. And there are probably a lot of other foods that might work for this too. Any ideas for flake-type fish food?

Ahaha great idea. xD Special K or Cornflakes would work.
Awww this is so cute. What a great idea!

Ooh, or those Frites things could work well, too. Like crispy dried "worms" ;)

What's a Frite? Is that something like shoestring potatoes?

This is so precious!! I wouldn't mind taking a few Crunch Berries to the eye if it means the kids are having a good time. :P

Personally, I think you should leave it looking like fish food, not a mermaid version, because it looks like it's the only thing you could really eat
but, that's just my opinion :)

Fruity pebbles would make a good multicolor flake food, I think.

Or those multi color potato chips. Those might get a bit soggy though.

There are so many cute ideas in here! Perhaps a silly question, but would you actually be eating the soggy food?

Seeing a lot of good ideas and suggestions here. I'll definitly be making multiple labels now for different cereals and candies!
Oops! All Berries = tropical pellets
Cocoa Puffs = regular fish pellets
Frosted Flakes = regular fish flakes
Gummy Worms = bait worms
I'm also thinking of changing the placeholder name of RAINBOWfish to Poesiden Pets and having a mermaid/whale fin next to the logo. I'll post a pic when I finish it.

So cute! What about dehydrated fruit chips as like a mermaid "treat"?
On a side note about the jumping out of the water feeding, my family did that to me when I was swimming by the dock with peanuts and I TOTALLY NAILED IT. Plus it's really fun

With all these great suggestions we have basically created mermaid trail mix. Or should I say "tail" mix? :eyebrows:

Still working on details, but it looks like Posiedon "brand" fish food will have a few different varieties:
Corn Flakes or Frosted Flakes
27698
Oops! All Berries
27699
Gummi Worms or Sour Neon Brite Crawlers
27700
Might make a few more. I'm thinking Cocoa Puffs so we can have a cocolate option, some kind of dried fruit (banana chips? apple crisps?), and then maybe something salty like pretzel nuggets or those multi colored chips?

Slang for french fries
Frites are also brand of snack, which is what I was referring to and what I'm familiar with. Sorry I wasn't more specific :)
They are crispy like potato chips but shaped like super thin french fries, which made me think of the 'dried worms' option.

"made out of real sailors!"
if frosted flakes is considered mermaid food the i think i would convince the kids to over feed me.
i think the idea is really cute and sounds fun but its not for me. im a mermaid not a pet :sweat drop: although i like the idea of having people with legs bringing me food.
Just found this thread and I really like this as an idea, but I personally wouldn't be comfortable being fed by random children. Sticky hands. Ewwwwwww.
However, for a tank show, I think it could be cool for the "mermaid trainer" to lure me up to the surface with treats so people could take pictures with me. Especially if those treats were of the chocolate variety... (or gummy/sour worms, that is a great idea!)

THIS YES  Or if your "trainer" dropped them in you could do like a somersault to grab it
Edit: What about veggie straws as another idea? The chips made of different vegetables and theyre shaped like mini straws. Theyre really good

Oh I'm 100% certain I could eat chocolate and gummy worms all day long. Provided I had someone to carry me home after the inevitable crash that always follows a sugar high :)
@Mary Marine - would you mind if I took a crack at my own take on this label, using yours as a template? I've got what I hope is a cute idea but I don't want to just go for it unless it's okay with you.

Absolutely! Feel free to use this as a template or copy and paste from it. You can use the same "brand" or make up your own if you like. :) This design is free for mers to use.

Thanks! The font is a ripoff of the Little Mermaid font I found of free fonts.com (I think?), and I added the tail myself :)

I think it is a great idea but don't forget that most food have copyrights too. You can not sell them as something else just because you change the packaging. You can give out to feed the Merfolk, but not sell.

The labels would be for mers to print off and make their own props, not something I would be making to selling, though I hadn't thought about how possibly selling a cupful for a quarter to feed the mermaid would be a possible infringement. Good point! Perhaps cups of cereal to feed the mermaid could be redeemed for tokens, like seashells or pirate gold? Or by answering a question?

These are super cute. While I'm not all that fond of the idea of random strangers getting their grubby nasty hands on things they intend for me to eat, I do like the idea of hiding my own food for me to feed myself in a cute/clever way so that it doesn't detract/distract from the ambiance of the performance.
I'm thinking if I can find a good hi-res picture of it, the fish food we used to buy in Iran for the goldfish at New Years would be a cute label base for my mer-food needs. :D

This is the cutest idea ever!! Something I would love the kids to do at gigs, the perfect time filler :D
WHY hasn't anyone thought of this before?
definitely bookmarking this one <333
On another note, while we're on the fish food topic; I bought myself some bags made out of recycled FISH FOOD BAGS(!!) while in Cambodia
I wish they sold fish food in cute bags like these in America:
