Cracked monofins and testers

Hey guys, I've been lurking here a while. I'm wondering if anyone has photos of cracked or broken monofins (brand / size, etc. doesn't matter) if you could link them here or send them to me? We have quite a few we've broken ourselves just by accident throughout the course of using them, but I'd love to see more pics. It's just helping me better understand what kind of flex and tension a fin needs to stand up to, especially for a pro mermaid who will be using these every day.

I've been working with an engineer on a new monofin that won't break or crack and is comfortable to wear. We have our kid size made, and the test results are superb! I really need some professional mermaids to test our larger size once the prototypes are in my hands (will be a few months, but I'm trying to gather info now so the process is as smooth as possible.) Let me know if you'd be interested in testing.

I only need around 3, in a variety of adult foot sizes. Our kid monofin fits all the way up to my size 9s feet (US) though it's a bit tight. I'll market them for kids ages 6 - 12, even though it'll fit a wider range, I just think older teens and adults will want a bigger fin proportion.

Hope this is okay to post -- yell at me if it isn't and I'll edit. I'm not posting any website info or anything just in case that's not kosher.

Rubber fins don't crack. Ideally, I would love to see more rubber mermaid fins that aren't made for kids.

I have 2 rubber monofins (Finis Foil and Mahina Merfin) and love them both! They are virtually unbreakable!

I'll see about getting pics of the two Rapid's my friend has broke. He's ripped the footpockets on one, and broken the post (that rod between the footpockets that the center of the anklestrap clips to) of another. The footpockets of his second are also starting to come off, so the footpocket attachment is clearly a high stress area, at least on Rapids.

Rubber loses its elasticity over time, as the agent that causes it to be soft gases out over time.
Once the rubber is hard, it breaks just as easily as any other material if you put stress on it.

That said, I used a pair of old, fairly soft bifins in one of the thermal pools which are too shallow to use a regular fin.
The chlorine ate away at them pretty badly, and they ripped in the footpocket after awhile :(

So yes, rubber can break.
I agree that it's a nice material though, and I've found the propulsion is pretty good.
Just don't expect them to last forever, especially when you use them in chlorine.

I'm a very strong swimmer. :D

I really put my fins through their paces, and since I live on a lake, during the swimming season I really push myself.

The hard rubber and plastic fins all seem to break across the ball of my feet, where the throat of the fin takes the most stress, and my lexan fins snapped because my design was large and...arrogant. I've since refined that shape a lot smaller and I am now using a thicker sheet.

I would like a rubber monofin, though, just for the beautiful way it moves and flows in the water...I'd probably only use it for pools/aquariums where it wouldn't be so rigorously used. More art than function.

Nope. Commercial fins last about a year for me. The thin lexan even less - full disclosure, I was trying to break them because I make them and needed to see how much abuse they can take. I haven't broken the thicker one....

So far, my Hydra has lasted really well for me. I've had it almost a year now, and it still looks brand new. (well, aside from all the old glue from when it was glued into my latex tail. But, in terms of wear and tear I don't see any stress marks anywhere.)

I'm a fairly frequent swimmer, and since I live on a lake I swim almost every single day during the summer. Even in winter I swim at least once a week. My friend swims almost as frequently as me, and he's broken two Finis Rapids in that same time period. (further validating my decision to pay a little bit more for the Hydra, haha)

I do try really hard to move with my torso and never my knees or feet, which reduces the stress across the bridge of my feet, at least in my Aquarius where that was really a problem for a while.

Subscribing because I'd love to test a new monofin! (: I have a Rapid in my tail and have tried several brands of bi-fins. Never broken anything but I'm always pretty slim and gentle with my equipment. I would really like to experience a Mahina next...

My shoe size is 7.5 womens. I fall in the borderline of feet being too big for kids fins and too small for adult ones!:lol:

My feet are long and narrow too. For example the Medium size adult merfin, I have to wear thick sports socks when I swim in it. And they still do move around a tiny bit, but do not fall out of it. I think it depends on the brand of monofin, whereas my Finis Foil size S, it is fairly tight, even when I put it on underwater.

I don't have a chance in hell of fitting anything "kid-sized." I wear either an 11 in women's or a 9 in men's (American sizes). I was honestly surprised to see that the Aquarius was rated to fit my feet. (which it. . . mostly does.)

So, if you need a tester with feet on the larger size I'm up for it. I can also recruit my friend, he's an 11 in mens. (I believe)

PearlieMae, you sound like me with shoes! I have....ONE pair of shoes I haven't killed yet, and they went through constant wear of two weekends of renfest, too....I love those boots....though once I make my Jedi outfit (for a whole 'nother adventure in cosplay haha) I think they'll probably die on me...I've not managed to break a monofin yet, which is nice, because I can't afford to replace one, especially when my main tail has a competitor, and I swim at a beach with nice currents!

I agree with Pealie Mae; Rubber DOES crack and break. Before I got my monofin I had bifins that I would fasten together with duct tape and use for a monofin. I put them through some pretty rigorous swimming, and the rubber feetpockets was stretched and stressed to the max by the end of summer. Upside is, the increased drag and bulls*** from the duct tape made my legs sway stronger...But broke my fins. :c Whoops.

Are you Suntails? If yes, what is the monofin made of and when will you have adult sizes?

Yes! I'm Sun Tails! Well, one half of it anyway. You might be familiar with my work already -- I designed the fabric line for Fin Fun's realistic scale tails (though their new designer did the flukes for some of their more recent colors). It's so fun to see them out in the wild, I'm happy the company seems to be doing so well.

After I left FF, I was kind of head hunted to head up Sun Tails, which was very flattering *blush*, and it's been a lot of fun.

My partner thought it would be fun to launch with a Kickstarter campaign -- kind of unconventional but it seems like it will be fun :) So we'll be offering our current child-sized stock of tails and monofins to hopefully successfully fund the manufacture of the larger fin (and if we hit our stretch goals I'll also launch our own silicone-like fabric tail line as well, in sizes child to adult).

I need help getting the word out though, so if you have audiences that would be interested in the giveaway, and could share the campign with them, I'd really appreciate it. Hm. That could explain why the Mermaidens collection have a more rounded fluke than their other tails.

All of my family think I'm crazy for taking up mermaid swimming, but I'll post it among the groups I'm in, pending permission of said groups!

Would love to know/see more of the monofin, as I'm looking to get a replacement for my Fin Fun Pro monofin, and a Magictail skin. From what I can see, the foot pockets on your monofin is some kind of neoprene or rubber that sits on top? Is it flat where the foot pockets are if I decide to take off that part and glue on swim fins for security?

YES, that make sense. I'm not a pro mermaid, but I've felt the same way, so I get it. Yes, our monofin has a neoprene foot pocket that wraps around. It's really easy to remove if needed for rinsing or whatever. It's flat underneath, there is a small rib between the feet but that shouldn't be in the way. What type of glue would you use? The adult monofin will have straps though, that keep your feet really secure to the fin so it feels like an extension, I doubt you'll need to remove it, but the option is definitely there if you do.

There's a video going up now that has a clip showing the back of the fin, it'll be on our channel soon. It shows my daughter swimming away from me in the fin, but no tail, so you can see the back.. There aren't any huge holes. Just two small ones to hold a strap. They're an inch long and don't effect propulsion. The adult one will have six small holes so you can adjust your feet more, that will reduce the bulge as well -- the little girls don't mind.

The white ones were testers, but I'm going to have a poll so people can vote on the colors they want. If you test the larger one for me, you'll get a white one :)

It's not bad at all, the neoprene is so much smaller than the monofins with a full sleeve, and the foot pockets on the inside are made of mesh, so the water flows right out and doesn't bog it down. The fin itself floats (so you won't lose it if it comes off in the ocean), but I don't feel like my feet are any more floaty than the rest of me. I'd love to get input on this though on the larger one from pro mermaids who would notice the buoyancy more than kids would.
