So today I ran into this on Facebook :

27729

And then, I read these following comments :

27730

Thoughts?? Have FlipTails gone too far in this?

Side note : this is a thread meant for discussing. Not to create drama.

I think its an over-reaction. A lot of people seemed more supportive of Eric's Porno tail, so why is this such a big deal? *Shrug* You can get cancer from a shit ton of things.

<strike>Nah. I dont think they should endorse tanning but I think he literally only did it so he could effectively show the black light effect. I mean you could shit on mermaids who are out in the sun without a hat or shade... lol but no one does that. to me I don't see glorifying tanning, I just see this is a great way to show the effects of the tail. I think people make valid points, but I don't think it's MVD intention to promote tanning. </strike>

ok I changed my mind because I didnt realize it was an add for tanning beds. Yeah, not my cuppa tea, Why do you even need tanning beds in florida...

I don't see this as a problem? It was a photo shoot for a tanning salon, not an advertisement for their tails. The whole cancer thing is a bit ridiculous, you can get cancer from sunburns which can happen if you're not too careful.

What does it look like without UV light? Are the colors still nice and bright or dull looking?

I think its a gorgeous tail regardless of what its for. So much effort and time went into making it too.

There's been cases of cancer tracing back to chlorine in pro swimmers (Granted very few cases) so you could say the entire mer community promotes cancer. There's so many things that can trigger cancer cells, it's really not that big of a deal.

I was thinking the same thing, I just wasn't sure if chlorine has actually contributed to cancer. The more you know!

Sure tanning is bad but the real point of the shoot seems to be to show off the UV effects since that is probably one of the only practical ways to show that off on the whole tail. I think it's a neat effect but I have to wonder how often UV is going to show up during normal tail use.

I think it's fine and a really cool idea for the tanning salon, I dont go tanning anymore because I realize I like my skin and want to keep it nice for when I'm older, but the UV tail is awesome, and she looks neat. Am I for tanning salons, no, but to each his own. People get offended about anything and everything, he got commisioned to do a tail and rocked it. But I am curious to see it out of UV

See that mermaid's skin? That's the kind of leather I want for the sofa in my grotto.

Honestly, are you surprised?

Nope. To be honest, everytime I see Mermaid Melissa getting a new tail, I feel that she is always throwing the finger at us.

Kind of like that :

Was it Santa?! Did Santa get the tail?! *flips table* Mkay...
Lol, at least she'll have a wider selection of tails to offer at her company.

I don't think the tanning thing is a big deal... I'm not going to a tanning salon and I'm not going to change my mind because of this ad.

I don't really mind the tanning bed thing. I think its a great idea to charge the tail by itself, but not in it.

But seriously how many tails does one mermaid need? *dies*:fallover:

I like the idea of the tail. Not the tail itself. I dont like the fluke. There are many other ways to charge it then a tanning bed. An actual blacklight works way better for uv stuff. Its not as damaging to the skin.

A mermaid in a glow tail at a rave, now thay would be worth seeing. Too bad this one belongs to mellissa.

YEEEEESSSSSSS. Kind of like a gogo dancer in a cage, but a mermaid in a tank in the middle of the floor.

I thought she already had black light/glow tails? huh. I think it looks nice. I just find his tails havent changed too much over the years. Very unique cool paint jobs yes but you see other tail makers with loads of different fluke styles, add ons etc. but you know, good for him. I know he only does this occasionally on the side. I think he mostly makes em for melissa but then takes on clients when he has time. I think Shannon is waiting for one and I saw someone else on my FB was too.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the photo. It's like everyone said, it's just trying to show off the tail not promote tanning.

Parroting out of the way: My country actually banned tanning beds a year or two ago, I found out the other day. They're completely illegal in Australia and you can get fined a boat load for even owning one.

My thoughts exactly. Just seeing one pic of a mermaid on a tanning bed isn't going to make kids want one (In fact they'd probably be more convinced just seeing very tan celebrities on TV). I also wonder about the black-light thing. Unless they somehow get underwater black-lights and do a night-swim with them for photos and such, what is the whole point of a black-light tail anyway?

The ad is for the tanning place. My choice to go or not to go.

The tanning bed shows off the particular paintjob of the tail. No pics of the tail out of the UV light because it's an ad for the tanning bed...leaving us all to speculate.

Mermaid Melissa is presumably the owner of this tail. No one is surprised. Evidently MVD and Mermaid Melissa have a symbiotic relationship.

Now...ask me how many f***s I give.

not related, but am I the only one who feels like the relationship between melissa and flip tails is really hurting flip tails?

^by that I mean that he only ever seems to make tails for her and no one else, every single new tail is for melissa. Does he have other clients?

Mermaid Mystery
03-27-2015, 02:53 PM
I've seen maybe 2 other clients. Shannon is getting one, otherwise recently I don't think he's had any other customers. I feel like Melissa is his tester guinea pig that got out of hand.
