View Full Version : What are good characteristics of a bra base for a silicone scale bra?

I am going to be getting a scale bra from Mernation with my tail, and I was thinking about what kind of bra to send in as a base, I realized that I haven't seen any posts with recommendations or tips about this topic, so I want to know what you have to say! (sorry if this has already been covered in a different thread)

Characteristic examples:
Are any fabrics worse/better? swim suit bra or regular bra?
Should it be tighter/looser? in either the band or the cup

now I don't have a scale bra but it looks like most of them need to be formed bras with a bit of structure to them

From what Raven told me when I asked about this it really needs to have a firm or padded cup, if it doesn't have under wire or the cups are very soft/ floppy apparently it makes it harder to build upon. Personal opinions, I think also something very firmly fitting in the cup is super important, because otherwise I worry about it pulling down when I swim. Personally I also went for a slightly larger cup, smaller band because it cupped my boobs better.

Honestly you can go to places that fit bras professionally (either places that just sell lingerie or the lingerie sections in department stores. I don't know places like that in Canada because I live in Australia sorry) and just ask them for a bra that would be good for swimming in. I did that and they were amazingly helpful, they made sure I got the best fit for what I needed it for (which was slightly different to my normal size (I got a 10E instead of a 12D)) and Raven said the bra I sent her was perfect. So I'd really suggest going to a place like that and just saying you need it for water use/ swimming.

Yeah haha. I shop there exclusively simply because I struggle to find things that fit anywhere else. Plus I love the customer service and the quality is outstanding! I have become a bit of a bra snob haha.

Absolutely. One of my good friends works at the one I go to so that's awesome too. I tried there for a strapless bra, but I find that they have maybe just a bit too much coverage. I didn't really want to look like the bra was covering my whole chest. Damn having big boobs

Yeah I had that problem, I was looking at 2 and one had more coverage than I would have liked, the other had too little. I decided to go for the little over because I'm a bit more modest anyway and I wanted to play it safe. I'll let you know when I get the top so you can see what it looks like.

Thanks, I'd like to know what kind of base would be best too. I bought a cheapie from k-mart with the thinking, if I stuff it up; at least I didn't spend a lot on it

Thanks for the in depth reply selene! I am going to Change of Scandinavia today for my bra base and hopefully they can help me find the perfect bra. I'm just worried because mernation prefers a strapless bra and my boobs are very picky about bras.

you can always ask if they're willing to put more scale (like Dotties bodice) or do seaweed on straps. It might cost extra but I've found that they're very good about working with what you need and want

Thats a great idea, but I can't afford to spend anymore :( perhaps they can add netting. Ill have to see if I find something comfortable today!

Get a bra that's a spandex/nylon material base with underwire, that has thin padding. (You don't want it weighing you down.) go for a snug fit, probably snigger than you would normally wear since the silicone will catch water (learned that one the hard way).

Yeah, bras tend to 'scoop' water...

are wire bras comfortable while swimming? idk im kinda scared becuase one i got a wire bra from the store pink and one from target. the rusty wires from the pink bra would stick out and stab me. i would put medical tape over it cuz im not gonna throw away a $30 bra. i finally did when the safty fell off the wire and cut its way out of the thick medical tape. what im saying is would the water make rust and stab through the silicone?

Most bras are made with plastic underwire these days, but I have several mer tops on metal underwire bras and haven't had an issue yet. They're pretty comfy for me, everything feels secured

Maybe you can try on one of those bras that don't have the padding inside? right.........

I think they are called Light Support Bras. If you're covering it with stuff like seashells etc, then you don't have to worry about anything showing through when you're cold...

I have a scale top by Mermaid Hyli, and it's super comfortable and supportive. (It's a 34C for reference)
It's the only silicone top I've ever used, so I don't have a base for comparison.
The bra base she used was a convertible style that has loops to attach straps if you so choose. It's slightly padded to hold shape and has an underwire. It's supportive, but doesn't give me crazy cleavage.

Depending on your bra size, I don't think padding is an absolute requirement. I would leave that decision to the top maker. In my experience silicone will cover anything from showing through if you catch my drift.

Honestly, make sure you get a bra that fits you and is comfortable. You are the once who has to wear it. :)

Can't wait to see what mernation designs for you!
