Fixing the Olds...Into news! 2 tails!

Okay so I've got two tails. One is my very first tail that is plain black stretch lycra (with a real ugly fluke lol) and the other is a partially glued sequin tail, which is too tight, so it needs a zipper, an elastic waist, and pretty much a new fluke...that I'll explain later. But I need motivation to get these done because I have a 3 month time crunch, so hopefully having a thread will help with motivation! ! I started making decisions tonight and things get crazy tomorrow!!!

I've got plans for the black one, but I can't really start until I order the monofin >_< I'm real nervous about sewing sequins to it because it's stretch so Idk if I should use stretch thread? Or if I should use fishing line like everyone else? I really wish I could glue them! But I'm afraid to because it's stretchy fabric.... hmmm advice would be appreciated there.

The blue one, the fluke tips are.made of like a plastic shower curtain that the paint won't stick to in the water. So I'm gonna rip the end of the fluke off and rip the seam down the side for a zipper.... dangerous cuz there's like no extra fabric so also scary. But I have to! It crinkles the scales too much when I put it on cuz it's so tight! So that's the plans for now.

I would think that regular polyester thread should be okay for the black tail. Fishing line might be overkill, and probably really annoying to work with for lycra. In any case, do some tests on scrap fabric first! Maybe you'll find something you like better :)

Thanks! I actually remembered seeing where llonka glued her scales and hers was spandex! So I'm doing a test swatch now to try that because I'd much rather glue them. That's what I did with my blue tail anyways.

So because of my inspiration from Ilonka I'm testing gluing scales with e6000 because she is who inspired me to do that with my blue tail. It worked great with normal fabric, but her tail was also lycra so I'm at least gonna try this cuz...well, I hate sewing haha

Test swatch with glue! I have little time to work on this today do I'm just gonna let this dry and focus on ordering zippers and my monofin. I think I'm gonna get a magic tail monofin. My friend Carolina Mermaid used one and said it worked great so as long as it fits! Wasn't sure what to pick but it sounds good to me lol Idk. So ordering com menses!

This is the fabric I'm gonna redo the fluke tips in. It's veeeery close in color, but not exact. But that's okay I think it'll be fine.

You could do some really cool effects with different patch work though! Fish tend to have different looking areas including fins right?? You could use the same materials in other parts of the tail as decorations to unify the whole design!

Well you could use the fabric for the fluke tips to make additional fins?
that would convert the basic idea that different material means fins. That's what I do with my tails!

That's a good idea! But then I'd have to redo the entire fluke >_< which is a lot of extra work. But I'll figure it out. Maybe I can use it around the edges of the fluke as well? Hmmmmm

So, the test with glue seemed to work good! I'm a little concerned about the stretching, but I think if I make something like a duct tape cast of myself and stuff it with pillows or something so it can stretch have the tail to my size and I could maybe glue it that way. And I can always sew a few in the blank spaces if there's any stretching that misplaces some of the scales.
I really would much rather glue scales then sew them. I hope this works! I may do a really big swatch test again just incase...idk :)

It looks like you're doing great!

Stretching out the fabric somehow is a good idea. That will help you place the sequins better too, I think. Good idea :)

Mmm you wouldn't HAVE to do the whole fluke! maybe just detailing? I use Vinyl for all the fins except the fluke, which only gets a trim at the edge, so it could still work for sure!

I do have to cover the whole fluke because it's black! There's nothing I've got that will cover it! And I do plan to use vinyl for a fringe at the end :)

So I've decided to only work on my blue tail. I don't think I need to work at that black tail right now. So I'm just focusing in. I tore the plastic off my fluke so it's just flat now and I'm drawing on the fabric now for what it should look like pics coming!

When i made my body form I also never realized how big my butt was.
It is a bit strange being able to look at the back of yourself. If I didn't have a spine (and could turn all the way around) I probably wouldn't have been so surprised.

Ripping scales.. so I have room for an elastic waist. Wondering if I should sew the zipper to the elastic or if I should put some kind of clasp at the top and start the zipper after the elastic

My dad helped me with my fin! We modified my monofin modification lol. I like it so much more now! I'll take it swimming soon :) I'm excited about it. I'm bed ridden from my back right now but he took my sketches and cut it out for me :)

Before you use the monofin, read this thread (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2638-VERY-IMPORTANT-How-NOT-to-cut-a-monofin-shape). If you don't round out the center, it'll crack more :(

Thanks! Yea I do the planning and he does a bit of the heavy work sick I can't really use one of my arms. But no prob! Sitting in bed just means I can work on the fabric and sewing stuff :) yea he just cut out my sketch with a box cutter. Came out good to me! We also used some plastic lids from giant ice cream boxes for the fin mod. Worked good in the water! Can't wait to try it with the new shape :)

Well I've got the zipper sewn in and the fabric flap to go over it. And I thought it didn't work at first because I couldn't zip it up, but instead of using the zipper I just pulled it on up over my legs and it fit just fine! Yay! Now I gotta put a waistband in it. :))))

I feel ya- I put a zipper in my latex tail so I could have a snug waist, but it's sooo hard to zip it up over my butt :( I gained a little weight and it just wasn't working anymore. I think I need to make it so the zipper can't go past the roundest part of my backside, because that's where it was the hardest to pull up for me. Maybe you have a similar problem?

Anyway, I'm so glad it still fits you! I was really nervous it wasn't going to work at all!

Yea I have no idea why it didn't work the first time. I haven't put on any weight. And the zipper goes down the side so it's not too lumpy. But doesn't matter now cuz it's working great. I bought a hook and eye clasp for it on the top. Can't wait til I finish the fluke and can start with scales!!

Alrighty well I really wanna make it so I can take my monofin out if I need to. But because of the fluke shape, I don't think I can put a zipper at the end of the fluke. I need ideas

So Carolina Mermaid suggested velcro. And so did my dad. But instead of putting it on the end, I'm trying to velcro the inside of the top, and make like a slip cover. This is what I got so far.

Okay cool! Yea all our sequins seem to be same color scheme and same sizes and I'm using shelf liner like hannah too and I also love her blue tail >_< hahaha that's so crazy. Thought it was funny. :) I'm hand sewing tho and mostly gluing them on instead. Just sewing through that one little hole and gluing around the edges to firm them down so I don't have to use so many and make them more patchy. Thought it looked more natural :)

Well I've been working almost every day it's just going super slow cuz everything is by hand and because I've had a hurt back for about 4 weeks now.. but I'm still trying and I'm determined! I've tried sewing, I've done gluing. So far with the 22 mm scales it's taking so much glue that I was sewing them in place and then going back and gluing the down to each other. Which REALLY was taking a long time. So today I've decided that since I'm going through so much glue anyways that I'm gonna just try to glue them. Gluing went great with the smaller ones but with the bigger ones I wasn't so sure. But today I figured I may as well try!!

Okay! So I put on my tail, and although it is really hard from the glue , it still seems to bend enough. I plan on seeing some patches and sewing them down the sides so there's some give somewhere in it. I'm pretty excited about it ^-^ I made so much progress yesterday and I'm so excited!

So I just showed my boyfriend my progress on my tail, he got so excited he's decided he wants me to cover one of his guitars in mermaid scales! Bahaha he's a professional electric guitarist. So I'm super excited to do that after I finish my tail project >_< hahaha that'll be schweet

I thought I replied to you yesterday. My phone must have glitched. But no I've only stitched about 2 so far, but I plan to stitch all the sides and some spots on the back so there's more allowance for give. :) I gotta make sure it doesn't crack. But it stretched pretty good when I put it on the other day! So I'm hoping for the best!

So made a big mistake today (don't worry I cleaned it up just in time so no damage) I bought more glue yesterday, and just went to use it. I just assumed it was right and squished some out on my scales and what did I see???!!

Are you gluing the entire scale? I did a spandex and sequin tail a few years ago and used E6000, but I only glued the top part of each scale...and it has still held up! (2009) I lost a few scales along the way, but I was rough on the tail and the scales that came off were the ones with the iridescent coating - they peel off!

It looks great! I can't wait to see the completed tail!

That's awesome Pearlie! The ones on the sides I glued the whole thing. And the tiny ones on the feet pocket but I'm just putting glue in a line down the center of the previous row of scales and a dab on the bottom of the one that I'm putting on. That's a good encouragement though thanks for telling me. The small patches of scales that used to be on there and so most of them don't have that little plastic peel on them. What size did u use on yours? These big ones don't seem to have any coating on the bottom side so that's a plus!

I thought it kinda looked like I had a scar or a birth mark. But the bigger scales are raised a bit so I didn't know if it looked silly? Whatchya think?

So I'm working today, even tho my back is feeling better, but luckily it's railing! So my ductape body mold I made , even when it's stuffed, it seems to crease in the middle of the thigh area. So I've decided to try and glue them on with me in it. We will see how it goes haha

So Idk if you can see it but my legs had an allergic reaction to the wet glue.... so I'm back to the duct tape body for now. It's still coming tho! I just gotta take a break and lotion my legs >_<

I doubt you'll have a reaction once it's dry. BUT if you do, you might be able to attach an inner cover. similar to how bathing-suits sometimes have two layers of fabric?

Alrighty I wasn't so sure if I was okay enough to work on my tail (I'm on some pain meds and muscle relaxers for my back) but I decided it would be okay cuz I only had a very little bit of glue left. So this is where I'm at for the day.

Update: so I couldn't do much today, but I had several small holes to fix, so I sewed all those back up, so that's good. And I put on the velcro for one side of the zipper cover. I gotta put scales on it first before I finish the velcro and before I start on the rest of the tail

I love how frequently you report on your progress. I feel like anytime someone asks how long it takes to do a sequin tail, I'll point them right to you. You can really see how time consuming it is to fill a tail with sequins, and you even seem to be working super fast compared to what people normally do.

I felt similarly when I saw that you only had one side done... it'll be totally worth it when it's finished, though. It'll be gorgeous!

Really? Aw thanks! I think I would be working a good bit faster if I didn't hurt my back. The first side I could do a row or less a day because I wasn't able to sit up. Then as I've gotten better it's sped up. My best day I did about 14 rows in a day! I'm still getting better so I have to go a few days without working a lot of times. But I do still have a whole blank tail to work on! So the black one will be completely different :) but thank ya! I love explaining what I'm doing mostly so I can talk to others about it and get suggestions. Cuz I don't have anyone around me to talk to about it besides my bf and my dad lol

Finally feeling good enough to be able to work! I cut to size and hand sewed the seam up the side of the whole tail, added a few more velcro dots and woohoo! !! Time to go back to scaling again!! :)) so excited!! I'll post a pic in a bit ^-^

Well its been a while cuz I can't work for very long because of my back. But it's coming very slowly. I was able to do 2 rows today! Which is about the average for the last few times. I am down to my last few bags of sequins so I had to place another order tonight. So maybe I'll be able to figure out how to work without hurting before they get here :) I'm so ready for it to be done! I sure hope it works and it's not too stiff >_< but I won't k ow until I get it moving in the water. In the meantime my mertailor tail should be here really soon! My first silicone!

Progress report:
I'm almost the little shelf at my butt so I'm super close haha trying to decide if I'm gonna change the scales near the top or finish it with clear or fade it to the pearly white ones or go back to smaller ones like I planned or just continue what I'm doing all the way up. Idk. Luckily working on it is calming my brain from all the stress of memorial day. I'm glad today is over. But I will succeed in finishing this big chunk tonight! I am determined. More glue tomorrow. Can u believe I used that whole bag of glue my dad got me? >_< ugh lol

Since I have a bit extra of white I think I'll try to eventually fade the waste to a white or maybe a peachy color of I end up having to order more scales.
