Dwarfism, or Short Statured merfolk? Autism?

I was wondering if there are any people here who might be LPs (Little People)?

I have a 4 year old son who is a LP with HFA (high functioning autism) and he is obsessed with being a merman, and all undersea life. He taught himself to swim in a a day when he was 3. He's amazing. He swims eyes open, does flips, turns, dives, tricks. Holds his breath forever. He's got his dolphin kick down, and can go pretty far (several yards) on one breath. People actually freak out when they see him jump in a pool because he looks about 18 months old (35 inches tall and 30 pounds), and have jumped in after him fully clothed.
We ordered Mahina's fins (different ones for him and his sisters) and I'm thinking the fit will be REALLY big, so I will have to do some constructing of a foot adaptation to make it actually fit him. I checked around but so far no one has made a monofin to fit a 5 inch foot.
I know my son would really be thrilled to find other LP merfolk, if there are any out there. He might just be the worlds smallest! :)

that's mermazing. I did a birthday party for a boy who was stunted growth, autism, and global delay. He didn't move on his own or speak but it was one of the best gigs I ever did and he loved loved mermaids. I even wrote about it in my book because he remembered me a year later!

That's fabulous! It's great that your son has found something he loves so much. I'm sure someone around here can help you modify the fin if you need it--lotta handy mers here. There's gotta be other LP merfolk out there, and the mernetwork is a good place to start!

I just looked up "short statured", and officially I qualify. I'm just under 5'4". Your son and I are in a pretty exclusive club!

As for fins he can use, have you seen the Aquarius monofin by Finis? Its for kids, although I don't know if its small enough for your son.

You can make a band that loops through the footpocket and around the ankle if a monofin is too big, it's what I did for my first tail.

I think its special, those with Autism and Aspergers Syndrome have special subject they love and will stick with it, I can acknowledge his passion for it :) Anklets are the way to go and attach it to the monofin strap at the back, I want to do that with mine to prevent it from getting lost in strong currents until my custom order tail is possible.

This will probably only be relevant for later on, once your son has stopped growing, because custom fin company SpecialFins only makes high-end fins that are little bit pricey, but they have in the past made fins for women with extremely small feet (they set up a buddy of mine who is <5 feet with some really nice bi-carbon fins) Here is a link

Im short statured too as Im like 4"11-5"1 depending on shoes and such lol so its nice to meet other mers who are short :) I do have to wonder about getting a tail for someone my height...they can make one my size right?

Hi MermaidMerida, SpecialFins only makes fins both bi- and monofins. You would have to install a monofin in a tail (or see if a tailmaker would do it) But they have successfully made fins for women wih very small feet. They are pretty pricey (these are carbon fibre competition fins) but if your feet are too small to fit into the smallest size of the low cost monofins, then perhaps this is the way to go.

Boy that's pretty small. The smallest affordable mono I've seen fits women's size 2. I saw a Wave in that size being marketed as a kid's fin. Have a look here

Hey Merfolks! Sorry to post and then disappear for a bit, things got a little serious on the home front, but we are back to swimming and having some fun so I can finally post back :)
i got our Mahina fins in and did a shoe adaptation for my little ones and it works perfectly! I took a box cutter to an old pair of athletic shoes and cut out the toes and the tongue, and shoved them in the foot holes. The shoes work really well, no complaints of discomfort or pinching!
MermaidShannon, that's so cool he let you out him in a tail! Sounds and looks like really great guy!

I'm a small mer, at 4'11, due to a condition called panhypopitutaryism. I had to take human growth hormone to get to this height - interesting history behind human growth hormone (hgh) by the way. I'm also a bit of a disabled mer, being blind in one eye (left, from birth) but that doesn't slow me down much! =3

Late to this thread, but thought I'd dive in anyway. Your son sounds like a great budding merman. I have Asperger's, but not short-statured. Another monofin possibility could be a FinFun monofin, which doesn't have foot pockets like most monofins. A pair of thick neoprene socks (if the texture doesn't bother him) could fill out the ankle part that holds it on.
