It Begins...

Well, I'm finally making my first tail.

I still have to put in zippers on the sides of the fin to permit it to zip onto the Fin Fun fin I've got. The fabric is a sequin fabric that looks like fish scales - they flip around and change color, like so:

Normally I'd be hesitant to use sequin fabric, but this stuff is secure - I mean REALLY secure, I've seam-ripped this stuff to high heaven and none of the sequins have fallen out. It's great stuff and comes in a bunch of colors!

I'm gonna be painting the tail portion a bit. Still need to add some fins and details....any ideas?

Thanks so so much! :D It's a 2-way stretch spandex type fabric backing. It's thick though, and VERY tough stuff. A little rough though so I might need a liner against my skin!

I think this fabric would make a fabulous dry event tail. They're REALLY shimmery and pretty, and the other colors I have just pop, too!

I have thought about it! I was a little stumped on what type of fringe though, I sort of really dig that clear fabric stuff, like this? 28125
But I'm unsure as to how to achieve that effect, and I'm not sure how to make that fabric keep its shape in the water.

I think drawing some sketches is an excellent idea. I'll have to get to the drawing board! Any tips on how to make fins keep their shape? :)

Thanks so very much merkitty! That means an awful lot :) I'm really hoping I can pull it off, the only issues I forsee is what kind of fabric to use between some of the expansion layers!

For the fringe (and maybe even fins?) you can use clear vinyl floor matting and cut strips, which is how hannah fraser does her fringes. It will hold the shape better then a flowy sheer fabric. I'm not sure if you can paint that, as it might come off in the water. If you decide to go for that and want it coloured do some tests on it!

I used contact to put under clay when I make molds, to aid in de-molding. I wouldn't use it for fringes though

Not sure! I did a quick Google search and couldn't find shelf liners at all on the Australian specific Amazon. There's a lot on just the international ".com" site though. Look at Walmart with the contact paper and there's clear shelf liner. That's what I'm using. It's the same stuff hannah Fraser uses but cheap!
