The late introduction of Merkitty From Toronto Canada!

Hello!

I am not sure why, but I never realized that I should have introduced myself and then I put it off but now here I am! I have been on here for almost a year now, my name is Anna, but my mer-name is Merkitty, although I am unsure if I should keep this name (any suggestions?) I am 18 years old. I have a wonderful boyfriend who is very supportive of my mermaid dreams and loves the title of being a Mertender.

I've loved mermaids since I was a wee merling baby, I have always loved water. Pools, baths, lakes.. I love it all. One of my dreams is to visit a nice exotic beach to swim with fishes in clear warm water. The closest I've gotten to Caribbean like waters (in colour at least because it was FREEZING but crystal clear and a lovely blue) is in Tobermory, Canada. The water there is AMAZING! (and so is everything else, if I could marry a place I would marry Tobermory, haha!) it is incredibly beautiful there, it looks like a Canadian haven where mermaids would come to lounge.

The first time I learned that it is possible to have a mermaid tail for myself I was 10, I saw some Mertailors and ever since then I've been hooked on getting my own! A few years later is when I learned about all the other fintastic tail makers there are and many more helpful things from this forum.

Last year I bought myself a Finis wave monofin, and I love the dolphin kick style of swimming! It feels more natural to me then any other form of swimming, I usually just doggy paddle otherwise :rotfl:

I recently placed an order for my own silicone tail from Mernation, their single colour option plus 4 pairs of fins, in metallic/shiny sapphire (with some silvery white blending at the fins) and a scale top. I live in Toronto (and sometimes Ottawa, during September-April to live with my boyfriend while he is at university) and we are going to road trip all the way down to Florida in May when my tail is ready! I cant wait to finally hit the oceanic beaches for the first time, try out my new tail and get some awesome photos! Last year I had ordered from Mermaid creations and as some of you have seen some other mermaids and I have had issues with that, so I am being refunded right now, although things were looking bleak, I am looking very forward to my Mernation tail, their customer service is great, They are so nice!

I am hoping to become a professional mermaid, I am a bit worried of this as I am a bit chubby, although I know there are some very beautiful confident larger mermaids, I have some body image issues, I suffered through some eating disorders from age 12-17. I am recovered as of now but as a lot of people do, I still struggle with my body image. I will just have to get a thicker scales as there will always be people who wont like the way I look!

I am slightly concerned about racism as I have brown skin, it isn't hard to see I am south asian, although the areas I live in (Toronto and Ottawa) are VERY accepting of all races I feel as if I might encounter some race issues if I am to become a professional mermaid. (I have witnessed some racism towards darker skinned mermaids before, but usually just on the internet.. tumblr/youtube)

I absolutely understand what you're saying about cold lakes looking like the Carribean.
I adore certain mountain lakes and rivers (right now trying to move there), their colour is unique, they're fabulous but...around freezing point all year round.
And I hate cold water lol!
No matter. There's no way I could return to the real tropics, so the looks will have to do! :rotfl:

Two other things you mention.

I don't think you have any reason to be insecure regarding your looks.
First, a pro mermaid, especially in a colder climate, needs to be a bit chubby, or you can forget swimming outdoors in a costume (unless you want to risk hypothermia, most people underestimate the quick onset and risks of that).

Second, I really hope you won't encounter race related issues.
I was raised with chinese beauty ideals. To this day, I think ghostly white skin looks great.
But looking at your picture, I can assure you: you're 100% fine as you look, colour- or otherwise.

And I think you're hundred times prettier than a certain blonde, pale white pro mermaid that shall not be named ;)

Thank you for your kind words Echidna :hug: I went snorkeling mid June in lake Huron wearing a 14 mm full neoprene suit and was still absolutely freezing. A strange fact that the diving instructor told me is that around mid to late august is when the water warms up a bit.. for about 2-3 days until it gets cold again, haha.


Its okay you're still a mermaid at heart even without a tail Seaglass! Whenever we get around to it I wouldn't mind bringing my finis wave for you to use (if your shoe size is 8 or smaller) :D
