So this introduction is a few days late since I had no idea of what to say...I still don't but here it goes anyway....Sorry I'm bit shy :$

ok...I'm 18...from New York...(I don't have a mermaid name)...my actual name is Elizabeth

I'm really more of an aspiring mer since I don't have a tail or even a monofin (or even a damn pool thanks to a ripped liner). I do have money for a monofin and I could probally figure out how to sew a tail (couldn't be much harder than a dress right?). Hopefully I can find a local-ish pool to swim in when summer comes... I currently study liberal arts but hope to study anthropology which can be summarized as the study of humanity. You can study a bit of everything which I think is really cool. You can find out more here http://www.aaanet.org/about/whatisanthropology.cfm if you're interested (I'm leaning towards the sociocultural field)...This may become similar to a big tumblr post I did a while back

I really love fairy tales, mythology, and folklore. I would really love to study how they play into a cultures development (which I say is a lot). I also think it's pretty awesome how so many stories from around the world are on the same plot line (take Cinderella for example. The earliest variation comes from, and correct me if I'm wrong, China And there are hundreds of others around the world). Fantasy has been an obsession since childhood (and I think the only creature that topped mermaids was a unicorn but I can't really be a unicorn). I love swimming to (not always around other people since I tend to feel very self conscious) but I really miss swimming. Last time I went was toward the end of summer last year when my family went to the boardwalk down in the city (that realization makes me pretty sad). So yeah (oh my glub i'm getting off track aren't I?)

So I've been fascinated by mermaids since I was a kid...right, I think I covered that...I used to watch animal planet ALL the time (back when it was still mostly animals and educational) and of course one of my favorite shows was the most extreme. I remember in one episode they mentioned professional mermaids and I thought it was the most amazing thing! But I kind of thought it was a job almost impossible to have, that you need to live right next door to get, and be crazy talented! Now the idea of mermaids is probally why little me always pushed myself to stay as long as possible underwater for as long as possible. Mermaids are great swimming inspiration. (oh crap this is long isn't it? sorry). But recently I discovered on tumblr that there IS a community of people who are PROFESSIONAL MERMAIDS! I kind of wanted to just a little bit immediately quit school and run away to mermaid school...but that's a TAD unrealistic (just a tad). Ok I forgot where I was going with this...OH! Relating it back to anthropology (hence merthropologist). I figure that many cultures (especially the sort who live so close to the sea) have many mermaid myths just as they would with anything else. I would love to research more of these stories (I sadly only know a few and nothing that isn't close to common knowledge). (I also have a hella good time trying to imagine mermaid physiology and culture)

right so...redeeming qualities....do I have those?... I can draw decently enough...I'm pretty creative...I like to design things...and experiment with ideas (so like in the future when I start testing ideas I'd be happy to share any glorious misadventures which I'm sure they'll be plenty of)....I drew a mermaid today bu I should have taken out a bigger sketch pad since it's hard to get small and fine details with big square pastel sticks...the shading was nice enough but the face and hands are crap...I like realism and didn't want it sort of cartoon-y looking...

um that's all for now...I hope this wasn't too terribly long and it was informative enough...

Aaahh!! That's so exciting! Mermaid Lindsey is in the area too! I wanna ask more detailed location questions but I don't want to be creepy lol. Anyway, once you get a fin, you should come swim with us!

Woo!! We're trying to find an indoor pool to use until summer, but haven't had any luck. Gonna try Mount Saint Mary if I can find my alumni card. Also, I have 2 extra monofins you can borrow if you have big feet xD

I'm a size 8 in most shoes but me feet are a tad wide (I'm trying to decide which monofin will be best to start with so I can learn a proper dolphin kick). I need to buy a new bathing suit too...I can't wait until the semester is done (it's half way there!)

Heya!
There are quite a few people on here very interested in Anthropology and Mythology.
I've studied a bit of that myself, and if done right, one can understand almost anything through deciphering myths ;) (considering that mythology was history to ancient people, and often proven to be true by science).

And you're right with Cinderella hailing from China, which is why there's that foot fetish in it lol.
(The prince announces he'll marry the girl with the smallest foot, because that's the most important aspect of female beauty, amirite?)

Anyway!
Have a look around, there are a number of threads where we were compiling mermaid myths from around the world, and discussing their origins and such.

Hey there! I'm from New York as well! I'm actually going to DCC next Tuesday after Spring Break is over to sit in one of my friends classes. Hopefully Seraphina & I are able to meet you soon to talk about mermaid stuff (: if not, hopefully we can have some meet ups during summer, I live on a huge lake that we can use (:
