A Tail of Art Theft (WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE)

I am not sure where to put this... but this happened to my friend and I have her permission to share it. I am sharing it because 1) the tail maker she originally sent it to: the only person she EVER sent it to, shouldn't have ever given it out or shown it without her permission and 2) I have heard a lot of bad things about this Charles Kemp guy, he is stealing her art, presenting it as his, and well... just generally being pretty horrible in the comments so i think people she be aware.

Disclaimer: Jazz clearly didnt know, and Syphira messaged her to let her know to see if she could be properly credited or have it taken down.

I'll leave you with screen caps and you can make up your own mind. I personally have known Syphira for years and have seen a lot of her drawings and I believe her.

Yep, This.
This is why I struggle with the desire to share my art pieces online at all, and they are essentially tail designs.
There are a lot of them, mostly created during my lunch hours or at night when I can't sleep, with pencil and watercolor markers, all sprung from my own brain or inspired by existing sea life.
I would love to show them, but perhaps only in-person, in a gallery one day. I've only shown portions of each piece on my FB page, never the entire work. My signature is close by on each one, just short of signing on the tail itself.
I'm sure some of my designs have similar versions floating about due to naturally occurring coloring details fish have, but I never see someone's tail or design and go "oh, I want that so I'll copy it".
If I see something that inspires me, I'm always game for the challenge of putting my own twist on it; rearrange the color patterning, use a different fluke shape, different fin shapes, different fin placement etc.

People seem to like using the phrase, "Imitation is the best form of flattery."
Sure, if someone wants to steal your stuff that means it's desirable, but it's no direct complement. It's just the laziest form of theft for the unimaginative.

yup I intentionally never post anything about ideas because this is not the first time this has happened. I don't even like talking about future tail design ideas I have. I cringe when I see people posting stuff before the tail is made because certain even big name tail makers are known for coming here and ripping them off.

but for a tail maker to give out his clients design? that's fu*king horrible. She didn't post it public. She didn't do anything wrong. She submitted her sketch to her tail maker in confidence and he exploited that. Could you imagine if any other tail maker did this? If raven gave out a client's sketch to someone else? we'd lose our shit.

Thanks! My life has been extremely busy lately and it has been hard to keep up with the tail making. I wish I could just do it full time, but I have school, activities, and this whole new TLC docu series. It's really overwhelming but once I finish my current orders I will just take one order at a time.

I think that as a creative person, I do get offended when my ideas are even closely mimicked. However, more often than not people who do take a piece of art that is not there own, do so out of coveting and then try to add their own twists and small details! We really should take is as a compliment! Those who do not add their own details and straight up plagerize, however should be fined. I probably misspelled that! Sorry.
