Update:
My zippers for my tail came in the mail yesterday! I bought marine grade zippers from ebay, a 18" for the back and a 60" for the bottom of my tail so i can take the monofin out.

I plan on keeping the shape and adding the ribbed shelf liner for the fringe on the bottom. The rest of my fabric should be here today or Monday and then I will be able to get started on sewing.

Update:
I'm going to start sewing the body of my tail today and right now I'm pinning the 18" zipper onto the back side of my tail... And as I'm writing this I realized that I started pinning the zipper on the wrong side of the tail, I meant to pin it on the gray side instead of the black side, oops! I'm using 20mm shell shaped sequins from a seller in China. I haven't ordered them yet but I'll post a link to the sequins when I get on the computer.

Here is the zipper pinned to the correct side of my fabric! On to sewing and I'll be using both upholstery thread and 8lb fishing line, just to make sure it really stays on there!

Here is the link to the sequins, if you ask them they'll send you a pdf of the colors they have. I don't know how much shipping will be but for the colors I've chosen they said they would be $13.50 per kilogram.
Don't hesitate to ask me any questions! I'll try my best to answer them or refer you to someone who might know better than I do.

Yep, I'm hand sewing every single sequin!

What fabric/material are you using for the tail?

Mermaid Clara
03-23-2015, 11:20 AM
I'm using neoprin, I know a lot of people advise against it though. One mermaid has used it for all of her tails though, Courtney Mermaid, i don't think shes on mernetwork though. but i already had a tail made of neoprin and I've never used it so i thought i would re-purpose it into a sequin tail.

Mermaid Clara

I'm in the home stretch! Just a little bit more sewing on the zipper then it's onto sewing the sides together!http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/23/bd402273794d247f5e76d90586e03e67.jpg

The reason why its recommended not to use neoprin is because it stretches out. However, sequinsing a tail causes it to lose stretch. I wonder if it equals out in the end?

03-25-2015, 03:04 PM
For what it's worth, I have one of Mertailor's neoprin tails and am very happy with it. Not sure if the silicone on the outside is holding it together or if it's because I'm more twig-shaped than curvy, but it's maintained its size very well so far. (: The neoprin would probably work well with sequins!

What kind of neoprin is this? as it looks like foam rubber in the middle (like what you'd find in neoprene) as opposed to fibres...

i'm sewing close to the edge because i want it to be seamless, i'm planing on covering the inside seams with e6000 (i tested it on some scrap neoprin and it held together and stretched well), i might see if i can do the largest zigzag stitch on my sewing machine for extra strength even though i doubled my upholstery thread.

I'm not sure, i bought it from spandex world a year or two ago, i don't recall what catagory they had it under but now they sell "spacer" or neoprin which is about 1mm thick i'm not totally sure if its neoprin or not because it looks very much like neoprene.

Grr! I've been trying to machine sew my fluke but both mine and my mom's sewing machines are acting up. I'm using upholstery thread and a 16 gauge needle. *sigh* well I'm just going to stop fiddling with it so I don't break it and wait until my mom gets home to help me.

Update: it looks like I'm going to have to hand sew the fluke together. Since both of the sewing machines refuse to sew it.

Because of getting one D in last semester in college I have to use everything in my checking and saving accounts to pay for half of my summer and fall semesters. So it's going to delay my sequin purchase by a few months unless I'm able to pick up more shifts at work or start fundraising to get the $125 I need for the sequins.

So I sent the money for the sequins through my dad's PayPal account and they sent me an email last night to confirm the order and I just really hope that this isn't a scam and I get my sequins!
I'm also working on sewing the zipper back onto the body of my tail and sewing together the fluke as well.

Tried on the body of my tail last weekend, too big in some spots since I lost a little bit of weight so I'll have to take it in. Also the fluke is done so I'll start sewing the vinyl on by hand for the fringe on the fluke and the dorsal to hide the zipper better.
In other news I'm restarting my guppy tank and added another 5 gallon. The one with the pink gravel is for the females and the blue gravel is the males.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/10/1e222033f2f01594c8f9efe5cea707cb.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/10/e3875439f7443e96cf88e4944e4af021.jpg

If you don't mind, how does the ordering process on Alibaba actually work? Also, do these sequins seem pretty durable? I'd love to make a sequin tail sometime in the future, and a supplier not in the U.S. is probably going to be much cheaper for me! Thanks!

The sequins are pretty durable they are quite thick and I've tried to break one but only managed to dent it. I wouldn't suggest the metallic ones though, a couple ended up in one of my bags and I could easily scratch off the color with my finger nail.
As for ordering on Alibaba, you just message them and talk to them before you order so they know exactly what you want. They will make a invoice for you and then after confirming it you send them money through PayPal. At least that's how it worked for me.

Spent 8-9 hours today working on sewing on the vinyl. The vinyl dorsal is done and I've redone the vinyl strips I had sewn onto the fluke, I'm almost half way done with one side. Then I need to sew on the Velcro and draw my patten and markings onto the neoprin with a fabric paint marker, after that I'll be FINALLY be able to start sewing on the sequins! My fingers are sore from sewing on the dorsal vinyl but then I found my medical tape and wrapped my thumb and index fingers so it was easier to grip the slippery needle and to push it through the neoprin and the vinyl.

Some updates!
First picture:
I am about half way done with sewing the vinyl strips on one side!
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/28/6b95de1199cd8c408c6abe658fc5f502.jpg
second picture:
Here is how I'm sewing on the vinyl. Nothing fancy just using a basting stitch with doubled upholstery thread.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/28/c224a55cfd9c090374045c0c0588d072.jpg
third picture:
Here is the hem, my sewing machine didn't want to sew the neoprin so I did a blanket stitch along the sides until a inch or two before the rounded ends. Then I cut the ends into flaps(? I don't know what it's called) and folded them over and glued them with clear e6000 glue. Now I'm not able to sew through the glue so I sewed the vinyl right above the glued hems. Does this make sense?
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/28/43e436ef11a6e70c4d49b9734e28978a.jpg

I found that wrapping my fingers with cloth or paper medical or sports tape a few times helps me get a better grip on the needle when my hands are sweaty and keep them from getting sore and swollen.

Hey there I want to say that I love the idea that you want to make a tail like jmb fx, coincidently I'm planning to make one too, I got the idea down, just not the color for the tail, I'm varying from blue like Zac's, to either the ones from H2o ? 2 years ago I'm meet with a special effects artist at JMB FX STUDIOS, his name was Steven Parker, and his job position was the painting, but what's his face Jason Baird, involved everyone on the making of the tails. Soooo? it hit me in the face that i see if he could tell me how they make the tails, without me actually telling him, because HE said that any information dealing with any professional processes must "Stay in the House of Jmb Fx Studios". so I lied, yes I know, but I wanted the info ahah, and I said that I actually graduated high school and im at University of Art and culture in Arizona, and we were learning about moulding, and I asked Steven if he could give me alil insight to his advanced knowledge in the workplace. and bingo I got it all. it took about 3 months to get it since he was constantly on projects, but yeah I got the complete information on making the tails, and yes ive heard that making it would be spending lot of money, but theres a trick to that, ill say, Alibaba.com is a marketing business place to buy large quanties for REALLY cheap price, because its straight from CHINA, im going to buy and recommend to buy there, ( Clear Silicone, Clear Urethane Resin, Nylon for the fluke, (which Ive seen go about 200+ dollars) NOT ON Alibaba though. Neoprene.)
Silicone- for the Body, dorsal fins
Urethane- Tail Fluke
Nylon- Inside the middle of the Fluke
Neoprene- Body Sock, which he said is actually 3 layered, not One!

Hi Kelly Mermaid! Im excited to see how your tail will come! I think gonna be gorgeous! Like you, im just finishing a tail. But is for a friend and is a fabric one. My next project is for myself and is a neoprene / sequin tail too. But i have a few questions to be answer, can you give me a fin(hand)? One of my big task is where to find the vinyl( and witch type is) to make the fins. I heard about make with shower curtains. That milky transparent ones. Also vinyl shower mats, but is hard to find with this stripes. You can tell me where i can purchase?
Regards and good look with your tail! ;)

I found this at Target. It's non adhesive clear ribbed shelf liner made by "con-tact" brand.

Normally i'm not a big fan of pink, but for some reason when i was designing this tail I kept going back to shades of pink. Also I choose pink because i plan on doing children's parties and wanted to have more of a doll/barbie like tail.

So I worked on my tail some the past couple days. I'm almost done with the body, with the help of my mom we used safety pins and adjusted it so it was pinned tighter. For the body I just have to sew it tighter and finish securing the vinyl around the zipper, I might just redo the vinyl dorsal on the body. For the fluke I need to finish sewing the vinyl and the velco on and then attach the two pieces together and then I'll be ready to start the sequins!

Well it's been a while but here is an update! My neoprene tail is such a Frankenstein tail! I'm looking into ordering some 4mm neoprene from an Alibaba company. I'll most likely order it with one side white and one side black if possible but I'll have to make a few tails because the minimum order is like 10 or 20 sheets which the size are 51" wide and 130" long which is perfect. But I'm super excited to be continuing this tail while I'm starting over I'm going to be doing some tests to see if I can strengthen the sequins and protect them from shedding the iridescent film, possibly with some clear resin or nail polish. Anyway stay tuned my lovely merfolks! Y'all are the one who keep me going!

12:30am rambling update!
So I've decided to add a belt inside the tail that is adjustable so I can adjust it tighter when I loose weight. I haven't heard back from the company representative I emailed but I just hope it's not going to be super expensive for the new neoprene. I already know shipping is going to be most likely more than what it actually cost like it did my sequins. But it will be worth it to have multiple neoprene sheets so I could eventually make more sequin tails. I'll probably have to hand sew all of this too but whatever.

oh sweet lord! i'm so relieved, after talking to like 3 or 4 manufacturers I finally found someone who has a low minimum order quantity! So the sheets of neoprene I plan on getting are 4mm thick, 55 inches wide by 133 inches long and the minimum order is 5 sheets and $12.60 per sheet, so i'm buying 6 sheets for $75.60(not including shipping). So buying 6 sheets gives me the excuse to make another sequin tail once i'm done with this one, or in case if i make a mistake.

Why 4mm neoprene?

Because I feel like anything thinner is too thin and not warm or strong enough. Mermaid Enora made a sequin tail using 5mm neoprene and recycled from a wetsuit. Mermaid Enora made a sequin tail using 5mm neoprene from a recycled wetsuit. She covered it with turquoise spandex and sewed though half of the neoprene. Check out her thread called "another sequin tail"

Pretty easy, just use a curved leather needle and some fishing line. I'm going to be hand sewing because my machine isn't made to see heavy fabrics like neoprene.

But recently I looked at my checking account and the balance is $30 and I'm crying because I really want to get my sequin tail done before summer so I can launch my business. So I might just have to start a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for the rest of the stuff I need to finish my tail and start my business. I'm now pinning them some other scrap neoprene that will be the body. Then I'll sew and attach the two pieces together. I'm most likely going to use some power mesh as straps on the shoulders and back so it's stretchier and I don't have a problem getting it on.

I think you'd be better off in the long run sewing them. Glue is okay, but it's not good against your skin, and if you have sequins with an AB coating, they'll peel off.

Mermaid Enora
01-30-2016, 12:12 PM
Agree with Pearlie
sewing is the best way for any long term usage of your tail. The glue will make the tail stiff as well as possibly only adhering to the shiny back coating and then allowing the sequin to fall off later.

I would definitely suggest fishing line!
The upholstery thread is tough but it just can't stand up to being pulled really hard when trying to get tops and tails on and off. I tried with my top and it all broke.
Also with that a plastic like fishing line.
I used a greenish thread like line and it worked better than the clear non woven line. at least in my experience.

Is the neoprene wetsuit quality? I've been noticing that several places are selling neoprene that isn't. I'm looking to order mine next week and want to make sure I get the right stuff!

Not totally sure if it is or not. Mood Fabrics sells a lot of good quality fabric. It seems pretty good quality compared to other stuff I've bought. The discription on the site doesn't really say much of the quality, just that it can be used to make wet suits. I'm really happy with it though!

Yes It's wet suit quality. It's actually better than the neoprene I bought form Foam Order before

Have you done any water tests with your sequins? I've got to get mine ordered! I was going to go through Cartwright because they have such good reviews but they don't have purple shells and they're kinda expensive.

Yep, they are pretty heavy duty. The only peeling of the shiny foil coating was with a lot of rough contact with concrete and sand paper. I'm really happy with the company I bulk ordered from but that was almost a year ago so I don't know how good their customer service/ ordering is now, but you might try contacting them anyway if you want to go with a bulk order. I think Cartwright has the big shell sequins in purple, I might be wrong though.

Kay I'm back to work on the tail. Right now I'm sewing the vinyl shelf liner onto strips of scrap neoprene from when I was cutting out the fluke http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160328/bbbc32687f55caca76c8b0cdb87f47b3.jpg

That red circle is one of those "screwy louies" for opening jars and stuff because it's hard to get a grip on the needle to push it through both the neoprene and vinyl with bare fingers.

I know how much using your bare fingers stinks with material that's hard to sew. I've ended up with little welts from not doing what you're doing.

Pliers are also really useful for pulling the needle through the vinyl.

Last night I made the decision to sell my materials. After not being able to sleep the whole night I've decided that I will continue this tail. Giving up on this tail just broke my heart because I've worked so hard getting to this point and spent all my hard earned money just to make this tail. It will be kind of a waste just giving up. I feel like continuing this tail will really be the best thing for me.

Do you think it will clash with my pink and white sequin tail? I'm thinking that it kinda reminds me of Princess Ariel's pink gown and with bright red hair maybe I could be a pink tailed Ariel?

Dyed hair doesn't last long in chlorine.

There is always this tail from Sun Tails. Its not exactly the same but it comes close and is just as pretty.

Have you had bright red before? It's one of the harder colors to keep nice because it fades pretty easily.
When I had bright red I only washed it in cold water, used special shampoo for red hair, and always got my hair wet with clean water before swimming. It usually faded to an orangey color in about 3-4 weeks even with being so careful. I worked in a salon though, so it was easy to color it often.

Update: I cut out the body and glued it together with e6000 so I can try it on to see if it fit. It fits and I'm just working on sewing the sides together since the glue didn't hold. I'm currently packing up my supplies to work on when I'm with my bff Emily tonight and tomorrow.

Just a quick update: I'm almost to the half way point of sewing one side of the body. Oh my, do my fingers hurt or what?!?! It would be worse if I wasn't using a rubber circle thing that gets open tight lids. I'm just taking a short break this morning cause I've gotten only 3 hours of sleep this morning, yet I'm not very tired because I had an energy drink and just from pure excitement that I'm not at home and I'm with my friend. Anyway I'm crossing my finger my day will be a happy, fun and productive day!

I have had almost that exact hair and it is incredibly hard to keep up! Especially if you will be in water and swimming. The red fades out within about 4 weeks to a duller orangish colour and the blue will go to a lighter teal colour. If you aren't swimming, it lasts longer, but still fades and dulls rather quickly.

btw, your tail is gong to be amazing! Don't give up! I am going to hand sew my whole tail too, you're my inspiration! :highfive::cheerleader::hug:

I'm working on adding a extra panel to the back of the body because my weight shifted. I have gotten more done on this tail in 2 1/2 days than I I've gotten done since I started this tail. I'm going to add the zipper next along with the fringe down the back of the body.

It's back!!!! I've officially decided to make this tail and finish it before making my full silicone tail. I'm so excited to finish sewing the neoprene and make my test swim. I have to finish seeing the extra panel of neoprene onto the body, add the zipper and Velcro onto the body, sew the fluke into the body, add the vinyl fringe, sew zipper and Velcro onto fluke. Then the best part, sequining the tail!!!! If I work hard enough I can probably sew one side of the panel on before I have to leave for work at 3:30pm.

I've finished sewing the extra panel of neoprene to the tail and now it fits perfect! I'm now working on sewing the back zipper in. I also made a new tape body form of my lower half and I'm working on stuffing it with newspaper, luckily my recycle bin was completely full of two maybe three weeks of old newspapers!

Bad news: I think I have a stomach bug or something...
Other news: I found my mini spring clamps and I'm using them to test gluing the vinyl down onto the scrap neoprene strips. I think the glue will work better with the vinyl if the clamps are on or if I put some heavy weight onto the sections where the glue is.

So the tests for gluing the vinyl onto the neoprene and clamping it down didn't work, it still peeled off. So I figured I'll just use the iridescent organza and the sheer organza instead. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161014/da8731a7ccb0e9c6968d026bbd1d0ece.jpg
