View Full Version : Any other Writers here?

I was curious if anyone else wrote here and what do you all write? I only started writing more extensively recently as in the past six months once I found free form poetry. Since then I have been writing whenever I get the time and the ideas for it. I write mostly poetry and I find that I do better with the first person introspective and romance stories. I also do other types that help to alleviate various stresses. Does anyone else write here?
Edit: All types of writing count

Congrats! Traditional or self-publishing? My uncle has self published four novels at this point. I still haven't quite got my act together to develop my idea. What genre? I love me a good urban fantasy. My future Work of Greatness will hopefully follow in the footsteps of Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, and Patricia Briggs.

Writer here as well, though I am absolutely terribly at following through with ideas and stories. I mostly write fanfiction for a few different fandoms, since that seems to come easiest, but have also been known to write original fantasy stuff. Almost all urban fantasy, since that is by far my favored genre. I have one work I've been plugging away at on and off for about eight years now.

I used to write fan fiction for Heroes of Might and Magic. I even had a story published on a Ribannah's Castle Gobs website... But the lady passed away, and they kept her website up as a memory to her.
Most of my short stories are fantasy or horror.

Can't say I've read the Dresden Files or anything by that author, sorry. I don't really read a lot of adult fiction, (which is a shame because most youth urban fantasy is awful).
I started a fanfic ages ago. I haven't finished it and I'm not good at finishing things I start. Which is annoying some people out there as I get sent emails asking when I intend to finish

I wrote yesterday! I've never written a short story or anything, (I only write longer fiction and poetry) but I was in class and we had to write a short one act play in 40 minutes and i did it! And it's totally raw, unedited, and not mer-related. It's got a nice trigger warning for rape and abuse, but if anyone wants to read it, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out for only 40 minutes. Here's a link.

Would anyone be interested in a writing critique group? We could meet like once a month (online) and give feedback. Perhaps we could have the occasional prompt. :) Or just post the occasional bit on here as we finish them. It might help those of us who have trouble finishing stuff (like me)... :) Of course I have little time at the moment, not until the semester's over, but I've been wanting to join a writing group for awhile now. I have a very thick skin and would love some sincere critiques of my work from other UF fans.

That sounds fuuuun! I could definitely use some critiques.
I write fanfiction and fantasy fiction. I'm working on a novel about a couple of mermen/boys, because there is not enough about the male of the species. I don't usually write mer-related stuff, but I decided I should. Generally, I'm a traditional and juvenile fantasy girl.
I do love my fanfiction, though, and the one I'm working on the most at the moment is for Wolf's Rain, a somewhat less popular anime. That and oneshots for ridiculous crossovers that my dad puts me up to.

I agree that writing fanfic is obviously still writing.
Wes, that was pretty good. If other people want to share stuff they wrote that would be pretty cool.
I guess I would consider myself a writer. I tend to write mostly fanfics and most of them are short (at least the ones I post are). I am very shy when it comes to my writing and I do not really share much of anything. I also have a bit of a problem finishing anything. However I would love to read any work from others. :)

It's really not that bad. I haven't finished successfully yet, but last year I got half way, ON time, and then I went to New York City for Thanksgiving and that ship sailed. You have to write 1,667 words a night, but depending on the emotional load of the story, that can be fairly reasonable. Give it a go. Or do a dry run at some point before.

I do write! Nothing sea related, I'm afraid, my niche is vampires. But not your usual vampire-meets-human-and-falls-in-love story. They are the memoirs of a vampire female that has been roaming the Earth for centuries.
I currently have two registered novels, but they are not published yet. I am thinking about using Lulu, or selling them in my shop as PDFs. Unfortunately, they are written in Spanish, which is my native tongue, so I don't think I would have a lot of readers
Delphinus, I would love to take a look at your novel! Can you provide me with a link?
Delphinus
04-24-2015, 03:21 PM
Talia: Absolutely! Here's the link to the paperback (there's also a PDF download too) http://www.lulu.com/shop/gregory-lewanski/oceanus-tale-of-two-tides/paperback/product-21397556.html
I do recommend Lulu, since it's very easy to work with and receive payment. Now, like most self-publishing, you need to put some money into advertising or hiring one of their services that helps get your stuff out there. I haven't been able to justify paying for any of their stuff, so I've only sold MAYBE about 8 to 10 copies. But, for me it's about the story, not the sales. Though, it would be nice to sell more! If you go with Lulu, just make sure that you read everything in the agreements and stuff, so that you know exactly what you're allowing. I haven't had any problems, but it's always a good idea to know.

Seavanna, what's your story about?
There is actually a thread about it on Mernetwork, but the link to the chapter is broken! The description is:
Rayla was just your average teenaged mermaid, plus or minus a few so-called “behavior issues,” at least until she found herself ripped from the sea and dumped in a creepy amusement park amongst a motley group of supernatural beings whose greatest talent seems to be wiping their own butts. It’s a long way from home, but one thing is for sure: She’s getting out of that fish tank, whatever it takes, and she’s taking her new friends with her.
I have one chapter of about 4,200 words done and I HAD a lot of plotting but my computer crashed and I lost it all, so I am starting with just a very basic idea of what I was writing. You can read the first chapter here if you like (http://pucktheplayer.livejournal.com/53566.html)! Note that the story is NOT adult, but my Livejournal is also where I keep all my adult slash (gay) fanfic so it's labelled an 18+ site.
Mer-Crazy, I'm a huge roleplayer, too! I have written fanfic that way before!

What was your Fanfic about?
I'm a huge fanfic writer. I have written several novel length fanfics. The ones based on roleplay are mostly Glee slash. Most of my fanfic is Glee or White Collar. I also have a distinct thing for slavefic because I find the sociological idea intriguing. I have an original slavefic I was posting to the Net that was adult and I have a partially finished Young Adult novel based on the same universe but totally redone to be non-kinky. It is called "Mid-Tier Slave." Description: "All men are created equal, and after a century of inequality the Supreme Court has finally declared this to be true: EVERYONE is now free to own slaves." The setting is modern day America but instead of Lincoln winning the Civil War and freeing the slaves, the North and South came to an agreement: Neither would expand westward and the South would be free to keep their slaves; however, slavery would not be allowed in the North and any slave who ran from their masters and joined the Union army was granted rights as a freeman. Therefore there are plenty of free blacks living up North. The North and the South have a very stressed relationship, with Northern unions actually forming terrorist groups in protest of anyone having slaves because free labor "destroys the American dream"--not because of a human rights issue. They're just worried about themselves. The main characters are two girls, Annabeth who is sort of a Kardashian of the South (she is the daughter of a Senator who owns The Southern Plantation, the largest provider of slaves in America) and Franci who is half-black, liberal minded, but ashamed to be the daughter of a known union terrorist. Annabeth has fallen in love with a slaveboy that her father sells to keep her away from him, and the plot revolves around her trying to find him. The Underground Railroad has offered to help her find him if she will help their agenda. (In this dystopian world NO side is a good side--they are all out to serve their own purposes. I don't write slave!fic to have a simple black and white world where slavers are evil and freedom fighters are not--instead I show the way everyone can be corrupted.) Franci, on the other hand, really wants to escape Harlem where her NAACP lawyer mother resides and takes a much sought after internship at a marketing firm... only to realize that with the passing of Eddison v, Kentucky which states that Northerners can now own slaves, she is going to be working on a campaign to sell "mid-tier slaves" to middle class people. Eventually the paths of the two girls converge in a lot of conspiracy and craziness, mostly because another intern in the program is Annabeth's twin brother Michael and his "companion slave/whipping boy" AKA half brother Beau, who is the illegitimate son of their father yet much loved by their mother and treated like a really twisted member of the family.
My biggest thing in writing is to write things that people find unexpected, and that is how I build my worlds. For example, when Annabeth first meets a black boy from the North who is part of the Underground Railroad she is shocked by how dark his skin is... In the South ALL black slaves are mixed and are lighter skinned. I work in a 99% low income African American school and the shade of your skin is a big thing in black culture, something I had never realized as a white person. "Blacker" people are often put down by lighter skinned people, and I wanted to represent this thinking pattern in the story, so I chose to do it by implying that Southerners have mixed more with their slaves while Northerners have actually tended to have children with fellow members of their race, leaving Southern people (black and white) surprised at the dark skin tones some Northerners sport.
That particular story is my favorite of the two I am currently writing (it and a mermaid story) because of its extremely dark yet highly reflective qualities. There are more slaves in the world today than ever before, and I want to remind people that just because the "wrongness" isn't all up in your face doesn't mean that it's not there. But I also want people to realize that our morals are formed based on the society we are raised in, and if you were raised where slavery is a norm, even good people can think it's okay.
Wow that post got really long and windy and off-topic... Just whenever I start talking about that particular book I can't stop. I should just finish writing the dang thing so people can actually read it instead of trying to explain it in long winded passages, LOL!

I recently read the scene written by Mermaid Wesley. It was a very well written dialogue. Your obviously had a big talent. My first degree was in theatre/playwriting and we had to do a lot of impromptu one act play writing. I also liked the idea of a critique group Dancing Fish proposed. I have a colleague who is an English professor who proofs and critiques my work and it's invaluable. I usually write in the wee hours of the morning and those days that were not seeing a lot of patients. My husband and I opened a Prosthetics Clinic in April and its been a busy, busy month. I've been working on two books. One is a memoir and the other is a series my daughters urged me to write loosely called 'Mermaid Wars.'

Because I just applied, I haven't yet had to deal with the issue of writing an essay for university, but I'm certain that many people have. I realized almost immediately that turning to experts in this area is a highly responsible step for me to do, according to paperspoint.com (https://paperspoint.com/) service. Everyone should write, but because of how vital it is, I believe it is good to ask for assistance. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone for the service recommendations; I hope I get a chance to use them!

Throughout the process, the essay writing service provided a platform for me to communicate with the writer directly. I could ask questions, provide additional instructions, or request updates on the progress nursing writer (https://www.nursingpaper.com/) of my essay. This open line of communication helped me stay informed and ensure my requirements were met.
