Other types of safe silicone?

Okay so please feel free to re direct me if this question has already been asked, but browsing through the materials guide and several silicone tail making threads I have not been able to find it. Is there any other skin safe silicones that have been used to make a mermaid tail besides dragon skin? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated

Dragon skin is a specific type of platinum silicone – platinum silicone is as far as I know the only silicone that's skin safe. There's tin-cure silicone, but that isn't skin safe and can be hazardous to your health and the environment you swim in. Honestly while people say it can be used if there's a barrier between the silicone and the skin, I wouldn't recommend it. Not caulking, tin cure silicone that you buy from a silicone manufacturer.

There are several brands of platinum silicone though, and lots of different types. Smooth-On is the most popular silicone distributor, but there's also other ones like TAP Plastics.

Honestly, TAP Plastics brand is even more expensive :-/ Smooth-On is one of the biggest companies/distributors, so it's probably still your best bet (though someone can correct me if they know a significantly cheaper brand). Platinum silicone is just an expensive material, period.

Yea I just checked TAP plastics and it's almost twice as much. I'll stick with smooth on just to be safe. Unfortunately I'm far away from all the distributors and don't have a way to get there any way. Is it safe to ship through the mail?

Smooth On ships pretty quickly, just make sure you will be there when it arrives, or ship it someplace where it can sit and wait for you and not freeze.

I use Vario, which is from Wacker Chemie AG and they're a German company, but they're more readily available to me than smooth-on

Latex allergies are fairly common, which could cause skin reactions, but as long as you get high quality latex, it is a fine material to use for mermaid tails. special effects makeup is mostly latex. It doesn't have any environmental effects post-production, as far as i know.

I think the big thing with latex is that some people have latex allergies. So latex tails aren't suitable for them. Also there is the risk with tail makers that they say they're using proper latex when it isn't.

Also there are several mermaids that got full latex tails and developed a latex allergy from wearing their tail :( Also if you're a pro mermaid latex allergies are a big liability issue.
Plus it's a lot more rigid, which can lead to big fitting issues. I know Mike Van Daal had to remake several customers latex tails in silicone because the latex ones wouldn't fit right. Then he stopped using it all together. Plus it takes longer to cure (is evaporation cure rather than chemical cure like silicone), breaks down easier/faster, and is generally harder/more unforgiving to work with.

That's assuming you use proper latex. The caulking latex is a whole other can of worms.

I was thinking about using the RD- 407 from monster makes like Julz and Mermaid Star. I wasn't aware that the latex caused more sizing issues. I guess I'm out of luck then as I can't afford silicone [emoji17]

I don't understand why so many mers try to pinch a penny SO hard. I'm just as broke as everyone else, but the few dollars you'll save making a tail on the cheap is false economy. If there is ANYTHING that you should scrimp and save for, it would be quality silicone.

Disconnect your cable. Make your own coffee. Brown bag your lunch. $200 a gallon (with shipping) really isn't that much.

Or, you can pay me $3500 over the course of a year and I'LL make your tail!

Fo' real. I had an equestrian friend of mind cheap out on a cinch she got a good deal on on eBay, and after several trail rides we were across the street at a park, the cinch (the belt that holds the saddle on) snapped, her horse panicked as she slid off, and bolted back across the street and was hit by a semi and ultimately had to be put down. All because she wanted to save $25 on a cinch.

Please consider your safety and the health of the aquatic environments you'll be swimming in if you plan to make your own tail!

That is so horrible! Poor horse! Your friend must feel terrible guilt.

There is no reason not to pay for quality when it comes to safety and a quality end product. I would rather wait and save for good supplies than spend time and effort always repairing some jacked up version that I saved fifty bucks on.

You can buy silicone in 30 dollar increments. It'll cost a bit more in the end, but it might be easier on your wallet and monthly budget.

You'd have to do more research into it. Perhaps ask them for the MSDS (they have the tech sheet but not the MSDS). According to this page (https://www.artmolds.com/condensation-addition-cured-silicone) "Addition cure silicones have food safe, skin safe and transparent versions." so I think you have to make sure that specific type is skin safe.
