Attaching Dorsal and Other Fins - Spandex Tail?

I'm starting on my next tail in a couple months, and this time I really want to add a dorsal fin, hip fins, ankle fins, and side fins. I'm making it out of swimmable spandex, and I already know how to sew on the side fins, but I want to ask if there's a trick to attaching the other fins to the costume besides simply sewing the fin attachment to the main body of the tail, maybe a way that will hide the stitches and make it look more like one piece?

So the way that I did my dorsal fins.

Step one. I made the fins by sewing them inside out, then flipped them right side out.
step two. I cut a slit into the body of the tail where I wanted it.
Step three.I then put the fins into the slit and sewed them from the inside so that they looked a little less just 'sewed on'

My Dorsal fin tail is just made with one seam going down the back of my legs. I made it this way only because I wanted a dorsal fin and nothing else!

And I find seams to be itchy when swimming, so I added swimsuit lining.

Have you had any problem with the slits unraveling or tearing with use?

Nope. I only use zigzag stitch when I make my tails and tops. Zigzag stitch stretches with the fabric.

I attached my dorsal fin to a belt that can be worn with or without the tail. I was having problems with the tail parachuting and getting drag around the waist, so I needed to create a belt. Bonus too that its adjustable, so when on shore you're not sitting on the fin. But my fin has pool noodle going through it, so its certainly less flexible than an all fabric dorsal.

Even better is that now I can wear the belt with my land-costume too and have a dorsal fin sticking out of my clothes! :o

I make my spandex tails out of two panels, a front and back section, and then sew them together along the sides (leaving the waist and fluke open) and then flip the whole thing right-side out to hide the seams. When I add side fins, before I sew up the sides of the main tail pieces, I align the hip fin section edges with the edges of the main body within the seam allowance, the fins pointing in towards the main body of the tail, line up the second body panel, and sew everything with a zigzag stitch. Then when you flip the body of the tail right-side out, the hip fins will end up lying neatly along the main body seam.
