Broken and worried

I need a little bit of advice and hopefully some reassurance.

Okay, so 6 weeks ago I broke my right elbow by getting too close to the rear of a horse. Tomorrow I am going to my doctor to (hopefully) get my cast off, but I'm worried.

For the past few days my arm has been causing me some discomfort and pain. My mom thinks that it is because my arm hasn't been moved for so long and that I'm worrying for nothing. To anyone that has broken something and had to keep it stable for a good while, am I just worrying over nothing? I'm right hand domant and I'm sick of having a hunk of blue plaster on my arm and barely being able to do anything.

I broke my wrist when I was younger, again right hand and the one I predominately used. 6 weeks in a full arm cast, 2 weeks in half an arm cast. By the end it was the most annoying thing every. Not being ably to move the muscles and stretch it, caused it to get uncomfortable and twitchy. Kinda like having to lay in bed in a certain position and not being able to move (that also gets uncomfortable and hurts). Though once it's removed, your arm will feel as light as a feather.

I think so, if the doctors say everything is ok. It should be fine. But see a doctor if it gets severe...or try wiggling your fingers more to increase circulation, thats what they told me to do.

How much longer do you have it on for?

I'm not a doctor, but I don't think you should worry.

If you can, do some simple bending and stretching exercises with the joint in a tub of warm water or in the bath tub.

When I fractured my elbow some years back rollerskating, I had a fibre glass cast. After it came off, the doctor said to do the above and the arm is perfectly fine now.

I forget why he said to use warm water, but when I did it, the elbow/arm didn't hurt or was sore.

I think it's common practice nowadays for most doctors to prescribe an amount of physical therapy sessions after surgeries or broken bones. You could ask your doctor to do that for you. If your arm has been in a cast, there may be a certain amount of muscle atrophy, which can cause pain and soreness, and you should be under a physician's direction as you do exercises to build those muscles back up :) (teal deer: I wouldn't worry :) )

Lol as someone who has had 3 full arm casts, that's totally normal! Especially near the end of your casts life. Just be gentle when stretching it after you get it off and like Jaffa said, doing stretches in warm water is great! It relaxes the muscles so it doesn't put stress on them

So my cast came off today and my doctor said the bone is almost healed.
As an added "bonus" I now have a brace on my arm.

Do stretching of the fingers too, slowly ball it up and flex them open. Its swollen because your arm and hand is stuck in one position. Once you get your fingers moving, the swelling goes away.

On the plus side, you could be Robo Mermaid!
