I thought it would be funny (and perhaps inspiring to anyone starting out who encounters a setback) to post our own mishaps during the tail making process. :)

Here's my biggest flub (so far):

I don't have pictures of the rest of the problems I've encountered (like that incompletely sealed mold, resin flowing everywhere...) but I've definitely had them. Because a sense of humor is vital to this whole process, right? :lol:

Not so much a disaster as an ongoing problem...my kid's hell on fluke fabric. She's only swum in her Fin Fun tail like three times since I sewed these fancy patches on to cover the big holes she wore in the original spandex AND the neoprene underneath. Arrgh! Perhaps I need to try some kevlar instead of spandex next time?

Oh gosh. Ok. How about when I seamed my purple tail together across the ankles at 1 am the night before my flight to merfest? Or what about when I left my monster clay sculpt out in the hot sun before trying to brush on shell shock (monster clay melts) or what about when I melted a plastic cup with resin and stained my dads work table (and the concrete shh don't tell my mom) *rubs head* yeah. It happens,

OMG I did that with some harem pants once, LOL! I made a lovely sparkly thneed that way.

I bought some lovely bright daisy print lycra and made a trace of the magictail skin... After sewing everything up, the new tail was too small and when i tried it on, I could hear seams breaking!

My very first tail had 'piercings' in the form of metal rings through certain fins. They were very pretty, but apparently I didn't buy stainless steel (should have read the fine print on the package) and I got rust everywhere. :p
One of these days I'll give it another shot. Maybe.

That sounds cool. I'm planning to do something like that when I make my silicone tail. I'm pretty sure Kalani has a tail with fin piercings too, LouLouBelle if you want to see it.

latest doof: i sewed my tail too short to include a big enough elastic channel. so i used a drawstring made out of t-shirt fabric, which keeps stretching, and showing my bathing suit bottoms to children -_-' i also forgot to leave holes at the bottom to drain sand and stuff so i ended up cutting the ends open with a KNIFE while on a trip :) but hey, it still looks good!

I thought I wouldn't need anything to close my fabric tail's fluke because the fabric seemed to stay put. Then I realized that when I do any kind of quick turns or certain movements, the fabric of the fluke comes up. This especially happened in a small pool I swam in when I visited my Grandparents. I had to keep swimming over to the steps and struggle to pull the fabric back down. It has been really frustrating.

I don't want to use a zipper or Velcro, so I was thinking of using snaps to close it? I also don't want to sew my monofin into the tail because I like being able to use it separately. Any recommendations? Nothing ruins the magic like having my fabric come up so you can see my bright yellow monofin. :doh:

Related: picking a gorgeous watery blue fabric with occasional dark blotches...and realizing right after you've cut the fabric that one of the darker blotches is exactly crotch level, so it looks like you've just wet yourself when you put it on. Argh.

I can't attest to the success of this yet, because I'm going to try it with the tail I'm currently making. But I bought several yards of black plastic boning, and I'm going to sew sleeves for it into my fluke fabric. It's flexible and you shouldn't see it underwater, but it'll keep the fabric from exposing the monofin when I swim. I hope. xD

I eventually cut it off though, because I had a better idea and wanted to try it - but in the future I'd definitely use it again, it looks naturally tattered

Use my Open Closed fluke. I have a video up on my channel, showing how I made it.

Variations of my technique that I have done are:
Sew one fin line on each side of the monofin to keep the fabric from sliding up. And sew in the edge of the fluke with fin lines, leaving a hole in the middle to take the fin in and out.
And sew the fin lines on the edge of the fluke, and still leave a hole in the middle for the monofin.

I've never been a fan of caulking, but those sparkly fins are amazing! They look like pure silicone instead of fabric.

Luckily for me I was able to get most of the rust off, so the tail is still usable. I'll try to dig up some pictures where you can see the piercings, or I may finally get around to replacing them and then take some pictures. They were really pretty while they lasted.

I have made the mistake of cutting patterned fabric the wrong way, I feel your pain.
