Anyone Read the Water Fire Series?

So I was browsing Spotify (love music) and came across the song 'Open Your Eyes' by Bea Miller (absolutely beautiful song by the way)... Strange thing is the cover has a mermaid on it. A quick search found the song was written for a series of new mermaid books written by Jennifer Donnelly. Has anyone read these? I'm trying to rent them from my local library, they seem interesting. If they end up doing well, I wonder if they'd ever try to make movies of this series. It'd be interesting to see how it plays out. Anyway, just thought I'd share :)

I read the first one, I have yet to read the second! It was a good book, I'll end up reading the second too. It's not my favorite book, I'm not as emotionally attached and drawn into it as I am with other books for some reason, but it's still good and I of course suggest it for the mermaids!

I'm having trouble getting through the first one. Some of the terminology bothers me, stuff like the word "merl" for a young female mermaid. And the science makes me twitchy, well lack of science. This takes place supposedly in a fairly shallow sea but the items like tables,chairs,cups etc are written as if they were not underwater at all. I know the idea that bugging out on the science behind a mermaid fiction book is a bit silly but it bothers the crap out of me

Edit: the other thing that bothers me is the mers wear clothes like dresses and stuff in the book... personally the less a mer wears aside from a top of some sort and head peices and such is best because I think mers should look and be wild and free...just my opinion tho

I've read both books so far and do enjoy them tbh even though I can be highly critical of them.

The bad points for me is that the author tried way to hard at explaining the world of the merpeople in the first book (or the first few chapters should I say) so that she could go into the story made it a bit difficult to get into properly and so it wasn't till about chapter 12 I was actually into the story and wanting to know what happened next, the second book was better in that respect. However the amount of detail she gives on the world, she actually ends up failing in some circumstances where she just over complicates and makes it more confusing imo.

Terminology, physics, clothing etc these are all things that bother me in the books. And as someone said above, the science. I like knowing exactly how things work and if I can't figure it out quickly it just goes through me and I end up getting frustrated.

The story once you're into it is great though, and I really enjoyed the second book. The whole history of the merpeople and the royal families of the sea etc is amazing and I love how culturally diverse the world is, and that includes the main cast.

I think they advertised the books in an extremely bad light though...all pumpy music and animation in the TV ads and 'DISNEY' plastered all over the posters and such...I knew a lot of parents that bought the book for their 5, 6 and 7 year old children...the books are far from suitable for people of those age ranges and if that's the market you're hitting with a series of books aimed more at the teen market you need a new marketing team. I wouldn't be surprised if the second book never made as much sales in all honesty.

A movie would be good but to do it right it would have to be in the pirates of the Caribbean/other live action Tim Burton style Disney movies for it to work. An animated tinker bell style series of movies would be cool too but they'd need to be watered down a LOT considering the movies cover themes of violence, murder, death, nudity (mer-nudity at that), threat etc...and even though people may shout 'Kids can handle those themes! They're tougher than you think!' even if that were true, Disney can't handle those themes in their child marketed movies. So I really hope if a theatrical adaption is done it's done well. Although I wouldn't be completely against a series of movies aimed at kids and loosely based on this story (maybe taking the same world, phrases and looks but none of the story or characters perhaps...kinda like what they did for Disney fairies I suppose)

Overall I really would advise anyone to give the books a go. They can be fun and interesting most of the time.
