Starting my first neoprene dolphin tail :D

I've desiced to make a neoprene dophin tail different blue shades. So far I got my first neoprene in the mail this weekend and I asked the company of the dolphin tail monofin if they shipped to the Netherlands as well, sadly he hasn't answered yet. Later today I will post a sketch of what the tail will look like.
My bf liked the idea but only thought that it would look funny if dorsal fin would be positioned on my butt :/

I've always thought the dorsal would go on the butt though. Anywhere else would look weird.

Between the shoulders is too high, middle of the back is still too high, lower back/bum seems about right, and anything below that is too low. And logistically speaking, the butt would be the highest you could put a dorsal.

Yeah, that's what made me think about making myself a tail the first time, when I played Kindom Hearts. I loved the underwater world :D

I don't think that having the fin on the butt is bad, but I think that if you could put it on the upper back it would look awesome. More importantly, I think that if you could make a dorsal fin on the upper back, it would give you much better lateral control while swimming. See, normally when you swim with a monofin, you don't have much control for turning.

A dorsal fin actually gives side to side control- whichever way you lean you create an angle of attack that generates a lifting force, similar to an airplane wing. But to do it it needs to be at an angle relative to the flow, and you can't do that if its on your butt. It needs to be on your upper back.

I'm not really sure how you'd make it though. Your shoulder blades have a huge range of motion. I don't know how you'd keep it sticking straight out instead of falling to the side. The best I could come up with was something with straps, but I doubt it would be secure enough, and I don't like how it looks.

I'm an aerospace engineer professionally, so I've had training in airfoils and lift generation.

Ok, so this would be a huge hassle and would probably not be worth it in the end BUT what if you used medical adhesive, the super strong, water proof kind, to attach it? That would be really aesthetically appealing because it would look like it was a part of your body.

Perhaps a clear or skin-tone band to keep it there, maybe silicone so you can texture and shape it properly. You could reinforce the area that buckles/hooks/buttons/whatever on. There's stuff like plastic or metal corsetry boning that might worsk should it be a bit wide. You could even incorporate it into a mer-top. :)

Pandorah - Yes! That is a brilliant idea! If you were to attach the fin to something stiff, it wouldn't slip to the side. The one problem is that it might make it uncomfortable to swim in it. On the other hand, I have seen a video or a mermaid swimming in a corset and she seemed to swim pretty ok, despite her inability to get the proper body roll motion going due to the stiffness of the garment. Ooo!!! You what would be really cool? What if the fin was incorporated into some sort of armor or something. It would be relatively easy to design some really neat shoulder armor that supported the fin. (<- costume designer geek out)

It needn't be a full corset, just enough to keep the fin in place. And I'll bet there's a way to make flexible armor. Malinghi's design could also have some pauldrons (shoulder things) attached. I guess that's what you meant, but I envisioned a breast plate and back with a fin that looked like the tail protruding from it, maybe armored as well.

Ah actually the straps look similar to what I built for my steampunk wings. Except I had another strap right under my arms so it was like a cage-looking thing and it was attached to a piece of cardboard that fit comfortably between my shoulder blades. It stayed pretty well and was easy to move in, especially with the weight of the wings (I left them a tad loose so it wouldn't bend if I ran into walls, it would just swing). Perhaps something like that? I have a picture of the design somewhere but if you attached the dorsal fin to a piece of maybe like clear plastic or something relatively hard and skin-toned, then made the harness with clear straps or color it skin-toned it would work without the hassle of medical adhesive?

Armor sounds cool! I had also considered the possibility of making some other type of article of closing, like a wetsuit top with a dorsal fin.

That was my first thought: some sort of shirt with the fin built in. The neoprene would have to be pretty taut to keep the fin up right. I'm not too familiar with the draping properties of neoprene, but when you move your arms back, moving the shoulder blades, won't that create slack in the fabric and allow the fin to fall over? Again, not all that familiar with neoprene.

Lots of nice ideas :)
I was thinking of a heavy duty sports bra. Some of them are pretty tight and have a big back side to them, lots of space to attach the dorsal fin too. When I'm back home I will make some more design ideas (I'm at work now... so I'm illegal here atm :o )

A similar design could be used for seahorse fins... maybe a vest or modified swimsuit would work for attaching the dolphin dorsal fin. And yes, Kingdom Hearts and the Atlantica stages and Dolphin-Sora all totally rock! Ok, so now that we have the issue of attachment all (potentially) figured out, how would one construct a dolphin fin? Would one cut it out of lexan or something? Does it need to be curved on the sides like an actual dolphin's does or will it work flat? If it wont work flat, could one create a mold and fill it with silicon and use the lexan as a stiffener in the center? What do you guys think? Am I over thinking this?

@Taom Lol you seem overly excited which is a great way to start, as for design well i have this monofin : http://www.dol-fin.net/ which i am planning to work on possibly making a fabric tail. I say draw out your design, i mean make a bunch and find the one that really calls to you (different colors, tail shapes etc). and then work on that . (plus youll have designs for the future if you plan on making other tails) Im sure whatever youplan on making will in fact be beautiful.

Gah! I can't wait till next week to get my fins I want them now... Gosh, I sound like a little kid now.
I think I'm going to make the dorsal fin out of several layers of neoprene, to make it stand up, but still safe to use in a pool. I don't want to hurt people in places that are private... which is likely to happen with a dorsal fin placed on my butt.

For the design I'm going to maked it like Sora's tail, that has always been the idea. 5 more hours untill the weekend starts, then I can workout my design more :D

They have some sort of plastic rod at the center near the hilt, but the majority of the thing is just foam with only enough stiffener to hold up the sword.

*sighs* I wish I could understand people better. I started today on the pattern for my tail, and as I'm following a tailoring course I asked the teacher for help. Guess what, all she could do was laugh about it or make fun of it. The only one who liked the idea was an elderly woman and told our teacher to shut it. So I'm going to continue further at home so I'm not bothered by more fishy jokes. Sorry for the pun.

I went swimming with my new mono-fin yesterday, it was a little different at first, but I quickly got pretty fast with it. And I'm so happy he gave the neoprene half socks with it else it would be to big. Sadly I don't have foto's of me swimming with it, but I will try to get them next time.
I'm now waiting for rest of my neoprene to complete my tail :D

Woo, I got my second sheet of neoprene as well, the colors go well together. I only hope the difference in thickness won't be a problem.

An update.
I stared with my tail this weekend... finally... Stupid work takes to much time away from doing fun things.
I already love how it looks even if it's still the rough shape and not yet sewn together. I hope to post pictures soon, but my bf kinda lost the camera

about the dorsal fin, i was thinking that if you had a mold then you could make it to the curves of your back and then there's this bra for girls (duh) that has clear straps that are also removable and if attachted through the hard plastic correctly then it should stay on and stay up if you also run it through the actual main strap as well. the bra itself is aslo beige so it would be decoratable and paintable. i will post a pic of my drawing later
