I've decided to do what a couple other mers have been doing. I'm going to make my first silicone tail for another Mer at cost. I have a fluke design and I'm looking at finding someone who wants to take a chance and do a silicone tail at cost.

I've added up what I THINK will be pretty much all of the costs, and I'm at $708 right now. Of course, that is bound to change when I'm actually ordering materials, but I think there's a Smooth-On distributor near enough to me that I may get out of shipping fees. Going to look into it some more. Fins crossed!

Working on custom scales :) I think I like the two on the left. Not sure if the far left one is too close to Finfolk's though D: what do you think?

The one on the top right is really unique. I like how you used a wing shape :D

26494926bdgqifkwb

I'm not sure how well it will translate to silicone. I have to make a stamp of whichever one I choose and stamp about ten billion clay scales. Haha

I really dig the one on the bottom. :)

26494926bdgqifkwb
04-06-2015, 12:02 AM
I think I'm gonna go with the one on the left, since it's the most "mermaidy" to me. I don't think it's too close, either. I might make a second scale sheet with similar to the bottom scales at another point, though. ;)

26494926bdgqifkwb
04-26-2015, 10:45 PM
Bad news; I think my fluke might be uneven. Which means I'll get the WONDERFUL opportunity to scrap everything I did on Thursday and redo ALL of it. On the bright side, now I know how to work Monster Clay and it should go quite a bit faster.

Mermaid Olivia!
04-26-2015, 11:25 PM
And it was looking so awesome too... it's a shame you have to do it all over. :sad eyes: At least you realized it before you made the mold!

Morticia Mermaid
04-27-2015, 03:57 AM
Thats an awesome sculpt! Sad you have to redo it, I know the pain. I had to redo my first one after the mold failed (Yeah, I cried... a Lot).

Tip- take 2 pieces of poster board, tape them together and draw out your design on one side. Cut it out then flop it over, trace and cut. Boom, perfectly symmetrical :)

Silva
04-27-2015, 09:22 AM
This tail is going to be amazing!:yay:
Don't worry about the fluke, it happens to everyone at some point

26494926bdgqifkwb
04-28-2015, 10:30 AM
I actually may have saved the fluke mold. The only uneven part was the right vein, so I fixed that part. I guess we'll know for sure when I try the silicone (I'm gonna test a REALLY thin layer before doing the actual cast)

26494926bdgqifkwb
04-29-2015, 12:35 AM
SO the fiberglass is really flimsy where the veins are. I'm hoping to just sort of patch it there to make it stronger rather than having to completely re-do the fluke mold. I'd really rather get on to the scale mold and the silicone :D I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. For now, here's a picture:

That's a GORGEOUS fluke sculpt!!!!

26494926bdgqifkwb
04-29-2015, 11:02 PM
So I scooped the clay out of the mold, and a lot of the fiberglass cracked and sort of....shredded? So I'm gonna redo it in Fiberglass Resin Jelly, which I used for the scale part of the fluke mold. It worked BEAUTIFULLY, and didn't crack even a little bit. So I'll be redoing that within the next week. I'll go ahead and post a picture of the beautiful (but ruined) mold.

Hey Kaitey, I feel your pain!!! Fibreglass and monster clay are very frustrating to work with. You can use a hair dryer on the clay to get it out of your fluke mold or put it out in the sun. :)

Conveniently, I have a heat gun that I use for my cosplays.

Keiris
05-01-2015, 01:02 PM
Yeah, I find the Monster Clay to be a pain in the ass to remove from Shell Shock molds too if there is a lot of detail and veining. I left one mold out in the tropical sun for a week but it was still a pain to get out. Sorry you have to re-do the fluke...I know how frustrating that is.

26494926bdgqifkwb
05-01-2015, 03:36 PM
I think I'm gonna try using stiff paintbrushes to get the clay out of the finished mold. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to finish the sculpt tomorrow morning :)

I just had a thought- since you're using oil based clay, have you tried using oil to clean it out? I was just thinking that since it's oil based, oil should be able to dissolve it. I would try it in a very small place though, just in case it doesn't work :\

Since Monster Clay is SUPER expensive, I want to save as much of it as I can, otherwise I would try that. It's reusable (I'm using the clay from my first attempt on my second attempt) so I can just scrape it out and use it for future stuff (like my scale mold :))

ShyMer
05-01-2015, 10:36 PM
Oh definitely! I guess I assumed you meant you were scrubbing out leftover clay residue or something. Carry on <3

It's a good idea, ShyMer. I think Pearlie uses oil with the plasticine type clay she works with. Have not tried it with Monster Clay.

SO....I didn't work on the tail at all last week. I will be putting in as many hours as possible within the next few days so that I can have the tail done before my vacation to Florida this summer. I'm currently working on the scale mold, which (naturally) is taking forever, especially since I'm doing custom scales with a design imprinted on them. Hopefully I can start pouring scales by Thursday.

I've decided to take on a tail order for $1,100. This is $400 lower than my prices will be after I finish the first two tails. Basically, my fianc and I are having some horrible financial struggles because his job is giving him so few hours. I'm almost done with the scale mold at this point, so I may have a tail to show off by next week.

Wow! I'm amazed at the amount of feedback! For the seams, I used the dummy of Moana to wrap the scales around, pinning them and making sure everything was snug but not too tight. I also double checked the measurements, like for the widest point. I used Jessica's advice and made the edges of the scales really thin so that they could blend better. I'll have to patch a couple spots that were too thin and broke, but overall I'm really happy with how they turned out :)

Haha, I swear half of tail making is being inventive with what you have! I find that clamps (at least the ones I have) tend to leave marks, so this will probably give you a nicer finish too!
