Hi everyone, I just have a few general questions when it comes to traveling with a silicone tail. I am currently on the wait list for a tail from sirenalia (http://www.sirenalia.com/real-live-mermaids/)and I was hoping to travel to Hawaii with it! I live in British Columbia Canada so I'm just wondering have any of you had to take special precautions when traveling with a tail? Especially on a plane/crossing borders?
Depends on you fluke, I presume. If you have a fluke with a small monofin like a foil or rapid, it can fit in a smaller box. If you have a competitor, it may be trickier. When I went to Hawaii with my competitor, we had to make a box that just barely passed the size requirements of the airline. Check to see what your airline accepts and go off of that first.
And if you box it, be aware that security might open it up and check to see what it is. That's what happened with my fin but obviously no harm was done. You will probably get a little notice slipped inside the box saying that it was checked.

Thanks for the reply! I have a foil in my fluke, I'm hoping I can pack it in a large suitcase but we shall see. I'll check with the airlines and see whats allowed!

I have a foil in my fluke, and I'm able to pack it in a duffel bag. It's heavy, but you should be fine.

I also have a foil in my fluke. I am able to pack my tail in a large suitcase and put towels where the body of the tail has to fold over. I also add more towels on top to prevent and damage from suitcases being stacked on it. And yes I have travelled by air by that comment.

How do you guys deal with weight restrictions on airlines? Has anyone ever had issues with their tail being too heavy to transport on a plane? Then what?

I have the full silicone fluke from mertailor and I'm scared if I fold it to a certain extent it might tear a bit. there's no monofin, only silicone, but I don't know what to do honestly.

@Mermaid Selene - my tail including all towels and luggage, only comes to about 40 lbs so its within the 50 lb weight limit per piece on the airline I fly with.
@mermaidofthelabrinth - I have folded the ends of my fluke in my luggage every time I travel, even when I drive up to meet another mer for a swim. I have not noticed any damage from the folding of my fluke.

I managed to travel with my old silicone tail even though it had a competitor sized monofin. I'm pretty sure it only worked because of the size of my luggage, because even then I had to fold the tips down and it just barely fit. I would suggest using a smaller monofin, but you can make it work with a bigger one if necessary.

I'll be traveling on a plane with my finfolk tail this summer, it's the Loreena fluke with a competitor monofin. Should be interesting to try and fly with!

So how about when you are traveling and you have no tail racks? How do you guys clean and dry your tails in hotels rooms? Could I hang a 20# tail on a closet rack?

Just curious how this went for you? I have plans to travel in October with my tail and I am hoping to store it in a monofin bag and take it on the plane as a carry on but I'm concerned it might be too big for that.Did you check yours or take it carry on?
