Hi I'm Jess, I'm 20 and I was recommended to join this forum site by Mermaid-Lindsey on Tumblr! She's someone I really look up to!

I'm currently in College to be a theater major (with a Japanese minor) with a Design and Technical emphasis, with a goal to one day take costume commissions for plus sized people for Comicon!

I have always been into mermaids, but after last years Phoenix Comicon I found out you could BE one. One of the hotels was taken over by two Arizona Mermaid Sisters and they swam in the pool. I was in awe!

I don't own a tail, but I hope to one day save up for one and to swim all day long (provided I have the strength! Which I'm working on!)

Non Mermaid things I like: Pokemon, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club, Vocaloid, and pretty much any animated cartoon. (Just to give some common topics ^///^ )

I can't wait to meet people with similar interests to me! Thanks for this opportunity!!

Hello! :D The only types I know of (that can actually swim) are silicon ones! Is there a type that's better for people just starting out? :)

Psychiccupid, a fabric tail with a monofinn is generally much better for those just starting out. Even a neoprene tail can be a lot of work. There's a list of tailmakers, so check there! Also, welcome to mernetwork!

Yeah the most expensive part of a fabric tail is usually the monofin and fabric tails are definitely cheaper than a silicone tail. You will get to be swimming a lot sooner if you go with a fabric tail first and also you will get the hang of swimming in a mermaid tail before you take a risk spending more money on a silicone tail.

Since you said you want to do costume commissions one day you might want to look into making your own fabric tail. There is nothing wrong with buying a tail at all but if you are into costume creating you can make a mermaid tail in a day.

This is the video that helped me make my 2 fabric tails:
