i am in virginia... DC and virginia beach... I AM JUST STARTING and i need a tail but i want a beautiful realistic one and can't seem to find one i like :( any used ones you know of??? parrot fish are my buddies :) would love some help bc i fully intend on this being more than just a hobby.. this new venture isn't really new to me and has been a process all of my life so far.. See I'm a military wife and a mom as well as an ICU nurse of 15 yrs... ALL of my life i have seriously wanted to live in the ocean... I'm not kidding... I'm obsessed with anything that has to do with the water. As a kid and as an adult my fondness of mermaids , dolphins, aquariums has never wavered despite those that have made fun of my passion for such things... well now I'm a mom of a little mermaid... she amazes me with her need for the water too... she's 3 yrs old and can swim already :) anyways i really want to make my dream come true now...im tired of dreaming and never doing what i want to do... I'm sick of working so hard for things that aren't my real inner passion or self... its my time and i don't want anything or anyone to stop me.... i want to eventually do children parties festivals education for children.. etc..... as well as find some friends that just understand me and who would like to meet up swim etc... can anyone help me get started?? please please please

Hi Mermaid Dawan! Welcome to the forums!

It sounds like what you want is a custom silicone tail made to your liking, and that's going to take time, money, and experience. It's still entirely possible to have that kind of thing made for you, there are a lot of good tail makers out there, but you might want to consider getting a fabric or neoprene tail first. They can look just as good as silicone, and they are waaaaay less expensive, easier to get in and out, and easier to wash and take care of. If you want, you can even sequin them, and have a positively DAZZLING tail that looks very professional!

EDIT: As far as meeting up with fellow mers, try joining a pod in your area. For you, I believe it's the Chesapeake pod. Lots of really great mers there!

Welcome! What a lot of mers like to do is save a bunch of inspirational images of fish, galaxies, certain colors, etc and that helps you narrow down what you like most and that then helps you figure out what your tail will look like. Just get to thinking of a certain color you really love and colors that might compliment it well, etc.

I agree with the others that starting with a fabric or neoprene tail might be best. You need to get used to wearing a tail and so going with a fabric or neoprene tail for your first tail means you have a test/training tail. You can accidently scrape it on the bottom of the pool or on some rocks and then learn from that mistake, etc. With a silicone tail learning in that could be scary because it is so much more expensive it would be much more of a big deal if you scraped it. You have lots of room for error with the fabric tails and you can easily scrap one and make another in a day, etc. The hard thing to realize is that a lot of the members on here you see with very pretty, realistic silicone tails spent years saving up for that tail and also the majority started off with a fabric tail and worked their way up from there.

I currently have a neoprene tail and may never end up with a silicone one, but neoprene is awesome, too! I still sink like a rock, though.

I was looking at the silicone and neoprene together.... i like painted neoprene and i know the colors i like and want... many of the fabric ones I've researched say that some of the embellishments etc come off really easily... as far as 3 grand plus to invest in a realistic silicone isn't going to happen at first i do know that... now if i could find a reasonable used one then yea of course id do it...who wouldn't ;)
yes the chesapeak pod is it... doesn't seem like they are to active though :(

I'm going with a fabric Tail from Growatail.com, which have some really nice fabric and if you're crafty you can add embellishments and you can use sharpies to give you Tail more personal details. I'm going to be ordering the orange one and add black sharpie tiger-like lines to make tiger stripes, since my name is Tiger Lily. (My mermaid name)

Sharpies are non-toxic, so they are eco-friendly and inexpensive. So win-win!

I'm excited... thanks guys.... have had a spandex tail before which is why I'm not to interested about that road again.... now I'm older and i just want more.... neoprene silicone agggghhhhhh really like mernation tails too..... anyone have anything negative to say at all about them??? i saw what was posted about eden... but since then??
