View Full Version : Wetsuit to tail in (hopefully!) seven easy steps

I'm taking the plunge and I've started working on my own sequins tail! And not just a tail, but a full bodysuit!

Composite of what I plan to make, just imagine more sparkle and actually in purple.

I'm making it out of an old wetsuit and the Dol-fin monofin I got from AptaMer. I've been hounding Victor Enterprises, makers of the nearly 2 inch wide shell sequins, and I will hopefully be getting my sequins from them. Please note that if you want to buy from them, you have to keep after them- every e-mail I've sent I've had to send twice before I get an answer. However, the most recent email I got from them said they were going to send me a paypal invoice, so here's hoping (I will be hassling them again if I don't hear anything by Monday, and I will let you know how it goes).

But here's my supplies thus far! The monofin is TECHNICALLY broken. One of the clips that is used to adjust the heel straps has snapped. However, the clips can be removed entirely with a Philips head screwdriver, so that's what I shall do. Then I'm going to glue the straps in place to the right size.

As for the wetsuit, I have run afoul of the wonderful world of vanity sizing. In jackets, I am a 2. In pants, I'm a 6. So I ASSUMED that buying a size 10 wetsuit off of Kijiji would give me LOTS of material to be play with.

NOPE!!! Please excuse the brown blurriness of my photo. That's not some weird Instagram filter, just my crappy mirror. :eye twitch:

This sucker fits me PERFECTLY, except in the boobular area, and as I VERY flat chested NOTHING ever fits me in the boobular area. Double A's! Not just for batteries anymore! And I should have known, because I'm a size 10 in vintage patterns. Oh well.

Luckily, the wetsuit is actually two parts- a "farmer john" (it covers the legs and body, but no sleeves, exactly like I want for my tail) and a "jacket" (it... well, it's a jacket). The jacket gives me plenty extra neoprene to work with. Luckily I'm using the Dol-fin, which is fairly small, and not a competitor or something like that.

SO! Here's my plan-

1)Fix Monofin
2)Rip out inseam and gusset from wetsuit. Pinch-and-pin to find correct leg size, but don't sew it up yet.
3)Use material from jacket to patchwork a cover for the monofin, reusing the jacket zipper along the bottom so that the fin can be removed (recycling!)
4)Get sequins from Victor Enterprises
5)cover suit with sequins (if all goes according to plan, I should be able to machine sew most of them on, and they'll hopefully hide my zipper. This is why I didn't sew the legs up earlier.
6)sew up legs, sew monofin cover to bottom
7)hand sew sequins over any gaps

This is the plan. No crafting plan survives the first encounter with the sewing machine, but hopefully it all works! Fins crossed!

Ok, things are not going in the ORDER that I planned, but they are going!

Step 1 is complete! I managed to get the plastic clips off the sides of the foot pockets, and glued the straps down with E6000.
Step 2 is complete! I ripped out the seams, and found they were overlocked butt-seams (stop laughing, its what they're called) so I can just glue them and zigzag stitch over them. Much easier than trying to get through 4mm of neoprene!
Step 4 is partly complete! I've ordered the sequins, but I haven't got them yet.

Cool! I'm glad you were able to order the sequins. It'd been a while since we've seen anyone use them. Maybe you'll inspire more people to try them out again <3 too bad they have to be pestered to get anything from them.

Gah! The delivery guy has tried to deliver my sequins twice so far, but I'm out of town during the day.

Its probably just as well, because my land lord is coming by this weeks so my apartment has to be neat, and this is what I want to do with the sequins

Anymore progress yet? I've got myself a $200 wetsuit for $50 brand new. It was an end of line discount! I too, want to turn it into a warm fish suit.

I'm picking up my sequins from the shipping place tomorrow, and I've been trying to find out what glue to use for the seams. I am the queen of research. Unfortunately, my research mostly says "use product X," which will be followed by finding something that says "never ever use product X."

Sew the seams and then use wetsuit tape over it? There is wetsuit glue too.

That's the thing- any glue or tape I'm able to physically find are evenly split between people saying "yes, use this it's perfect" and "no, don't use that it will destroy your suit."

I managed to find a dive shop in town, so I'm going to go there tonight after picking up my sequins and see what they have to say.

Pretend and say you're going to do repairs yourself and what the pros would do to fix it.

Got my scales! The packages were searched by US customs (I'm in Canada, I don't know why they went to the states at all). They opened the three packages and the sequins got all mixed together. Thanks so much for that.

As I mentioned, I ordered purple, lilac and white. This is what I got.

The high crystal shine finish seems to have given them all a greenish tint, which is kind of cool. but I'm confused as heck that some of them seem to be orange.

Edit: took a picture with different lighting. The green and orange disappears completely! I'm going to be a chameleons mermaid!

I've been sick for the past week, so I only managed to get out to the dive shop today.

According to the nice lady at the shop, the product to use is neoprene cement. The one I got is Trident brand. DO NOT use a brand called Aquaseal, as it doesn't stretch and can ruin your suit. Unfortunately, Aquaseal is way easier to find.

Wow, I haven't updated this in WAY longer than I thought. Here's how things are going!

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160701/0c2ad2a260ee68fa90bbe0a557eb3877.jpg

I'm hand sequinsing this thing, which makes me go cross eyed and I find to be literally mesmerising. I am not exagerating, I will have this on my lap and go into a sort of trance looking at the way the light reflects off the scales. I decided against machine sewing the sequins because that actually punches holes in the sequins, which weakens them. Also , I'm sewing them onto lycra, which is very stretchy, instead of the neoprene, which is not.

Yes, I'm not using the wetsuit at this time. My new plan is to make this as a sort of cover for the wetsuit and then have the wetsuit as a sort of undergarment. That way I can skip wearing the neoprene for dry gigs and avoid heatstroke, but still have it for swimming in colder pools or outside.

Edit: changed the picture

I actually made my monofin with Lexan and a pair of flippers! I'm so happy with this one that I'm thinking of making a silicon one over the winter!
