View Full Version : Best adhesive to bond silicone and neoprin?

I have a small spot where one of my scales has partially lifted away from the neoprin on my tail. It is barely even noticeable, as it is right next to/in the seam, but it still bugs me and I'd like to find a way to stick it back down. What is the best adhesive for this? I'm really not sure, because I obviously don't want something that is going to eat away at the silicone and cause it to deteriorate, but I want something that is strong enough that I don't have to constantly reglue it. Or, should I just leave it alone and not worry about sticking it back down? :thinks:

Only silicone can glue to silicone. Sil-poxy or GE 100% silicone caulking.

Do you know what type of silicone? As in tin cure or Dragonskin? The tailmaker would also be helpful information :)

It's a mertailor. He uses dragonskin. ;)

Ah, haha Wes you beat me to the thread :P

My question is: does tin cure and Dragonskin adhere to any kind of silicone? As in if you were needing to patch up a Dragonskin tail could you use any other form of silicone such as caulking or tin cure?

Yup, my tail is a Mertailor and made from Dragonskin! :) My guess would be that if you're patching Dragonskin, it would be best to stick with Dragonskin. Even if you could get another type to stick, it would probably have a different finish/texture and might take the paint differently. And thanks for the advice about Sil-poxy! Looks like that will do the job nicely... plus I can get it on Amazon and it isn't terribly expensive!

Something like http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/cntct_osns/overview/Loctite-Stik%27n-Seal-Outdoor-Adhesive.htm probably, Loctite Stick'n'Seal outdoor silicone adhesive.

I used GE Silicone to attach my silicone seashells to my bikini top. They've stayed on for nine months so far with no peeling, and my shells were old silicone

If you're using neoprin it shouldn't inhibit the curing because it's not rubber- it's fabric. A spacer fabric, but fabric. Neoprene inhibits the cure because it is rubber. That's why the Mertailor uses neoprin instead of neoprene (plus it's cheaper). As far as I know, you can use more silicone to bond them or (in the case of his "realistic" tails) pour the silicone right on. But patch test to be sure ;)

Finally got around to ordering some sil-poxy, and it should be here any day now! As soon as it gets here I will try to stick that one spot back down to the neoprin, and also patch a teeny little tear in the silicone on the bottom of the footpockets. My tail gets lots of use, especially the flipper, which I swim with almost every day, so I'm glad I will have some of this stuff on hand if I ever need to make other repairs. Does anyone have tips for how I should clean the silicone before I make the repair? I'm torn on whether I should use something like soap to clean the silicone first, or if I should just rinse it well with clear water and dry it.

I believe rubbing alcohol is the standard

Thanks! I got both spots patched together and I can't even find where they were after it cured! This stuff is awesome!
