So my dad told my 5 year old niece that when I was born I was a mermaid, and he cut off my fin and gave me legs. So now I wear a fake tail to feel like a mermaid again. I'm pretty sure she fell for it because now she wants me to draw mermaids for her. haha So now I'm curious. What are some stories you tell kids about mermaids/mermen, and do you think they believed you? :D

I go with the good old "curious about humans after they saved me from an oil spill" story(:

I once told a kid that, because I'm a mermaid, I can breathe underwater- but not pool water, because of the chlorine. Her response was "well *I* can breathe pool water! Watch!" And then she dove under! I have never moved so fast in my life!

Yeah, never tell a kid you can breath under water! Sea-monkey see, sea-monkey do as the saying goes!! ;)
I always tell my biological siblings that their mother was a mermaid and because I was her first born, I am one too! A was adopted by a human family and lived happily ever after!! :D

When I was doing a shoot at the beach a little girl came up to me, she complimented my tattoos and asked if we had tattoo shops in the ocean, I said "Yep! Except we use squid ink and urchin needles for our tattoos! The tattoo artists take out the poison first though!" And she was so excited that mermaids could get tattoos haha!

It must be cool for a mermaid to have tattoos of things on the surface! :D

My tattoos are an integral part of my mersona; how I changed from a human into a merman. Granted, it helps that all of my ink is ocean-themed. :)
Then throw in a sea hag's magic and a little ichthyoallyeinotoxism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthyoallyeinotoxism) .

I used to integrate the selkie idea into my mermaid transformation. Cause when you're seven, you have to change wherever you can, no adult cares to pretend you're real, so I told other kids that in the water, my tail became real, but I could take it off when I went back on land. It helped that I never used zippers in mine. Kids normally believed that story. They liked watching my tail "skin" slip off as I became human.

Another reason never to tell kids you can breathe underwater: they'll believe you and then expect you to be able to. And push you under. Yeah. Anyways, I say I'm like a dolphin and I can hold my breath for a long time. When dealing with kids, a minute is a long time. They usually are at 30 sec tops. Tiny lungs. :)

That's flippin adorable. One time on the beach a kid asked if mermaids have babies and when I said yes, her response was "MERMAID BABIES!!! CUTE!!! GO GET ONE!" And pointed to the ocean. I had to tell her that mermaids are pretty rare and I have only seen a few merfolk around these parts, none of which have babies. (Telling her that taking someone's baby wasn't working) and I also told her that mermaid babies can't stay out of the water for very long or they dry out and get rashes. Oh gosh and a little black girl asked me if there were any black mermaids and I about cried. "Yes I know lots of black mermaids and mermen, but I don't think any are as pretty as you. " I love kids 9u9

Depends on the area I am in (pool or natural). Usually I do the 'h2o' routine. When I get wet, I grow fins. works good for younger kids. Or I may use a selkie-ish story where I can take off my tail as a selkie would their sealskin.

Seavanna's story: In the late 13th century when I was five years old my father dressed me up like a little boy to sneak me onto the ship where he was working as a sailor. They discovered my gender just as a huge storm rose up at sea and (blaming the storm on having brought a woman onto a ship, as the old wive's tales went), they killed my father and forced me to walk the plank... Only it wasn't just any storm that had risen up. It was created by a band of merpeople, who planned redirect the ship away from the island where they kept the gold they stole from pirates--they had no plans to hurt any of the sailors as this was simply an explorer's ship, and pirates were the only ones they stole from. They were so infuriated by the fact that the men threw me overboard, however, that they sunk the ship and let all of the sailors drown. Since I had no more family, they took me back to their island of treasure, where the rivers bottoms were formed of doubloons and precious jewels were as common as flowers. I lived on land while my mer-family used the labyrinth of streams and pools to travel all over the island. I lived there happily for thirteen years before a band of pirates found the island and killed my merfamily. As she died my mermother called upon a narwhal to carry me out to sea, to safety, then gave me one of her scales to wear around my neck, placing all of her magic into it. Now whenever I wear the scale around my neck, my mother's magic takes over and I become one of the merpeople.
Yes, I have thought about this way too much.

My story is that I wasn't born a mermaid, but one day, I went on a boat trip, but the boat started sinking in the middle of the ocean. A mermaid rescued me and I became a mermaid, although I can switch between human and mermaid form, and I turn into a mermaid whenever I eat salt XD. And if I'm in a pool, which I pretty much always am, then I tell kids that I had to come here because some fishermen went fishing in my home. If they ask me to breathe underwater, I either say that mermaids cant breathe in chlorinated water, or that only the magic that ties merpeople to the ocean lets me breathe underwater. If I swam in the ocean, which I don't in my merfin, I would tell them its against mermaid rules to breathe underwater in front of humans. I only have a merfin, but its enough to convince little kids most of the time :)
