View Full Version : Where do you swim?

Wether to practice with a tail, or otherwise, I'm curious where people take their tails!
I don't have a pool, or access to one, so it's something I've been thinking about lately, as Im preparing for my first tail.

I'm still just getting started on my first tail, waiting for the monofin to arrive, but I have the same issue, no access to any kind of pools in the area that would allow my tail, so I have been mapping out and investigating all of the local area lakes with public beaches. This past weekend I found 3 lakes within an hr drive of home, and from that, 5 potential beaches where I can swim both for practice and to interact with the public if I so choose. (2 of them are more conducive to children/family swimming) I have a LOT of lakes to check out over the course of this summer so by next yr I hope to have my favorite locations well mapped and planned. :)

I haven't finished my tail yet, but I have access to a TON of beaches, being on the coast, and there's also a public swimming pool. (-shallow kiddie pool, lap pool and rehabilitation pool are all at the 'leisure center')

Good luck for you two with your tails! :) I'm sure when you're able to swim, you'll have a lot of fun :)

At my local aquatic centre. I frolic in the deep end of the competition pool on most days, unless its some carnival, then its the deep end of the Wave pool.
They have a competition pool, a wave pool, a shallow puddle for babies, a program pool, a water slide and a wave rider.

In the winter, I swim at one of several City of Seattle pools once a week. In the summer, the local lakes. I live on a boat, so more often than not I just step out my door and jump. There's also a number of city parks with beaches that I frequent.

I'm pretty fortunate. There are several beaches within a 15 minute drive or longer if you want to explore the coast. The Gulf of Mexico is on my side or I can drive across the state an hour and a half to Lauderdale/Miami and enjoy the Ocean. Noone uses my pool in the summer so I have it all to myself. It's one of the reasons that I live in S. Florida. There's no shortage of places to flip your fins!

The local indoor pool is very supportive of the merfolk community. :)

For Cali, the In-Shape Health Clubs are totally fine with monofins as long as you follow the lap pool etiquette. I powerlift, then swim for a few hours three days a week, so I feel like I get my money's worth at thus gym. :-)

This thread has me a bit envious of the many mers who are allowed to swim at indoor public pool facilities. I have looked into all of the local pools in my area and the monofin is not allowed, nor are goggles. Since I know I won't be willing to give up my swimming come fall & winter I am hoping to make enough of a splash around here locally in the lakes that I can convince one of the hotels in the area to let me swim in their pool during cold weather. I am hoping to find 1 nice one where I can offer up a trade... me as their resident mermaid, happy to interact with their guests and help draw people to stay at their hotel in exchange for free use of the pool. If that doesn't work then maybe I can find one that will allow me to pay for just pool time at a reasonable fee, maybe a seasonal fee that covers the entire winter and bad weather during the summer.
I have a funny feeling my community isn't going to be very supportive of a mermaid unless I can somehow turn it into such a big deal and draw so many kids/crowds that they HAVE to get on board for business reasons. I guess time will tell.

Seems like a lot seem to be pretty open to it, for the most part. Shame about the ones that aren't.
Dan, that's really cool! I know there are places around here, so I'm going to do some digging and messaging to see if any of them are welcoming for monofins, too.
It's not a terribly far drive to the SoCal beach for me, assuming this car works. >< Once I get my tail, I'm going to be out as often as I can afford to be!
Also, on a related note;
Does anyone do group swims, or do you prefer to go alone?

I almost always go to the public pool with at least one friend, often two. Neither friend has a tail at the moment, but they do have monofins. I always find it more fun to swim with friends than alone.
I often swim alone in the summer, though. Simply because I swim almost every single day and my friends just don't always have the free time.

Yessss!!!! Pleasepleaseplease :D :D Except I haven't tried a tail at the local pool yet, but will try when it's done. They allow me to use my monofin, so a tail should be allowed :)

Delphinus, it's always more fun to go with someone! It usually makes for some very excited and curious onlookers. Afterall, how often does one for a swim and get to see a mermaid and a merman?!

I agree! I need to find mers to swim with when I get my tail. And to answer that last? Not often enough!

That's poop! How can they not allow goggles?? I don't see a reason not to, unless someone has been perving underwater! What if you need them to see like in prescription goggles? Stupid rules!

Jaffa, I agree it's stupid but unfortunately it appears to be the norm at most indoor pools in this area. So many rules that I can't see how people are even having any fun, really. It doesn't make any sense to me, but rules are rules. <sigh> There are a few gated beaches in the area, public but lots of rules and a fee to get in. I'm still not sure if those are going to allow my tail either. I made mention of my tail at the local fabric store last week while out shopping for some supplies and the girl looked at me like I was nuts. Hahaha! She said she had never heard of such a thing so I offered to bring in some photos when I am finished. Her response to that was, "oh, please do!" I am expecting that kind of reaction everywhere around here, but likely some won't be so open to it. I think some photos of me in my tail at a local beach may help me get into either a public pool somewhere or a hotel pool, so I will have to spend the summer building a portfolio to help convince them that they should allow this. I have a feeling this is going to make quite a splash around here, literally. ;-)

yea. and the chlorine is awful in public pools. i swam at the y with my tail a few times and the chlorine tore my eyes up. not just after a while, as soon as it touched my eyeballs. ill stick to salt water

I swim at the Shoreview YMCA pool in Shoreview, MN. Im hoping someone would like to do a swim meet-up. Its awfully lonely swimming as a mer alone.

MermaidRuby, the Great Lakes pod is planning a meetup in WI Dells this August, would be great if you could join us there! :-) I am expecting to swim alone for most part. There are no other mers in my immediate area either. Do you have a mer tender who could maybe swim with you from time to time (not as a mer)? I told hubby I expect him to swim with me even though he won't have a tail, lol. He got nominated for taking photos, lol.

I do want to go to the meetup in the dells. I was just hoping that some mers in the twin cities, MN area would see my post and suggest meeting up beforehand. Im not sure if Ill be able to afford the trip to the dells this year, and my mertender/boyfriend is a big chicken when it comes to water, so its really hard to get him to come swimming with me, but he will come if I ask really nicely. When I do swim at the Y, I always announce my presence to the lifeguard that there will be a mer in the pool, but I usually can only swim around closing time when the pool is practically deserted. I really want to make some face-to-face connections in the mer community. Im pretty much a newbie to it. Ive only been mermaiding since October of 2014! I really want to be able to swim with some fellow mers in the area before the summer meet-up in the Dells. It's hard for me to meet a lot people at once.

When you have a silicone tail, it's like a wetsuit. You get used to the cold. That, and Alexander is a constant 73 degrees. It may be chilly getting in, but if it's hot outside, it feels AMAZING. Other springs are different temperatures, too. Rainbow springs felt like a bathtub last time I went.
